I think maybe what i am trying to ask is would it be more significant to an employer if you're applying (for a teaching position) with an ivy league degree rather than one from Vanderbilt although Vanderbilt is ranked higher? This question could really be applied to any field.

Hello everyone! i just read the US news top graduate school for education..
TOP 5..
1. Vanderbilt- Peabody
2. Harvard
2. UT- Austin
4. Stanford
4. Teachers College, Columbia U.
All of these schools are obv. great for education but is US news really a reliable source for this sort of ranking? I may be a little bias because I am going to TC but I don't know how UT-Austin jumped from tenth to tie with Harvard. And I know that Vanderbilt is a great school and has a great ED. program but does anyone feel that when being interviewed for a job the employer will think higher of you if say you're applying with a degree from Harvard or Columbia-TC even though Vanderbilt has a better program? (according to US news) so yeah i was just wondering what peoples opinions on these rankings were...

MAT in Social Studies @ TC - same here for me. When are you starting?
Feel free to get in touch. Take care and congrats.
thanks and congrats to you as well! sent you a PM

Thanks! I am hoping I hear something soon because it is the only program I am still waiting on... I'm actually a little concerned because I don't have any experience, and my background is in anthropology rather than education. My GPA (3.85) and GRE scores (680/620/5) are fine though, so who knows. I also studied abroad for a year, so I am hoping that makes a somewhat unique applicant.
Did they give you any information about funding? Do you think that is where you will go?
No info in regards to funding... i have been accepted to NYU as well... TC was my first choice so im def. going ha
-
I still haven't heard anything back yet, but it seems like a lot of people are starting to get notifications. How long ago did you get your acceptance? Congratulations!
hey thanks! i got my acceptance on March 1. But the letter was marked feb 27. good luck! and just because I have noticed alot of people asking for admits stats.... GPA: 3.92 no GRE's- one summer research experience- and 2 years tutoring in urban schools- i think my experience truly helped me out considering most people applying to TC have high GPAs and test scores... good luck

Hi all i received my acceptance letter from NYU on March 1 for their Master of Arts in Social Studies program... the letter was sent to my house Via postal mail from them on Feb. 22
-
I found this post on here while randomly searching for TC and figured it would be cool to give it a new life!! so, I was accepted to TC ( Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies) did anyone else get accepted yet? and what are you living situations?
-
I am def. surprised that i found out so early... i randomly checked the applyyourself site and a new option appeared titled "admission decision". I guess just keep checking the site because i have yet to get an email actually telling me to look at the site ha
-
Hello guys, i just heard from both NYU and TC today. Im in for both schools... check your applyyourself account on TC's site. That's where my decision was posted..
-
they emailed me saying that my decision was up so i should go check my app status and that's where i found out. they're letting people know in batches, so you may find out later.
i got an email about all the fafsa stuff too and then a couple of hours later i received the decision email. AND i actually applied for the MA applied linguistics program, not the education program. so what they want may be different from what you applied for (since this is an education thread). i actually don't know why i posted this here and in the linguistics thread LOL. but my gpa is only a 3.2. really low, i know. and that's why it's such a miracle that i've been waitlisted.
Oh ok thank you! Yeah i applied to Social Studies Ed. My GPA is above a 3.5 so hopefully all goes well. Thanks for sharing your GPA and good luck im sure you will get in!
-
hey guys, did anyone else get an email regarding fasfa and scholarship deadlines today?
thanks
btw @ gradschool do u mind sharing your stats? nothing too personal just GPA. I also feel as if i may be waitlisted.

Hello everyone! Im considering NYU for the fall of 2011. I know of the reputation that comes with NYU, and i also read in the US news that Steinhardt ranked #16 among education programs. However, i just wanted to get the opinions of some people off the site as to how good NYU actually is. thanks everyone!

haa thanks for all the great replies guys..
-
thank you! yeah im applying for social studies ED. programs.its only a few comma mistakes in the PS so it shouldnt be too much of a hassle for them..
-
in an email I got after i sent my App. in it said we should hear (masters students) by march 15

Hello everyone! i submitted my Personal Statements for my schools almost a month ago but i decided ( i should not have ha) to re-read my statement. While re-reading it i realized i have a several sentences that should have commas and do not. Do you think this kind of mistake could seriously upset the admissions people? thank you!

Disclaimer: This opinion is based on my experience applying to PhD programs two years ago (I've since changed fields and am reapplying) and what close friends who are professors have told me.
In theory it shouldn't. However, it does for two reasons.
1) If you are a professor and have met with the student who wants to work with you, it is less of a risk. They have a better idea of who you are and how well you will work with them. Remember, a professor accepting you as a student (at least for PhD programs) is a career move for them too. If you do great, it will look good on them. Even if they are not on the admissions committee they know everybody who is and likely have daily contact with them. They can thus flag your application for a more careful review.
2) Simple name recognition. If you have a strong application, you want them to spend the most time possible with your materials. Committees review hundreds and in some cases thousands of applications. At one point or another it all begins to bleed together. Anything you can do to stand out (in a good way) is great!
That said I have friends who are professors who hate students who do this. Others, however, prefer it. When I applied two years ago I sent a very brief email to the Professors I wanted to work with. I did this after the start of the fall semester, when they are back in the groove of teaching but not yet rushed by grading and finals. I simply stated that I was interested in working with them and wanted to know if they would be willing to speak with me sometime. Half the professors I wrote ignored my email. Of the ones I did speak with, I was accepted to the programs in which I had the strongest connection with the professor.
thank you for such a detailed response! btw i put this in the education forum because shes applying for ED. programs. She is applying for her Masters degree so I dont know if she'l actually be working with a professor. but i think its good she went regardless...

march seems so so far away.....
haha im in the same boat as you! btw a friend of mine heard that she got in for last fall on Feb. 23rd (masters in art education) so keep checking!

This afternoon i had a conversation with a peer who is applying to graduate school. She told me she visited the school this past summer and spoke with a professor in the program she is applying to. However, the professor is not on the admissions board this year, but did tell her to email him when she submits her application. My question (and hers) is will this actually make a difference by helping her odds? I said to her that i believe it will because she actually visited the school and showed a certain level of commitment in doing so... anyway, id like to hear everyones opinions so i can get back to her with a good response!! thanks guys

-
Hi everyone im pretty new to this site so i hope i am posting this in the right section! but i just sent in my application on the 15th and already im bugging out haha.. does anyone else feel this way about TC or any other graduate school?
-
I also applied to TC ( different program) but you can actually edit your Personal Statement even though you already submitted... you just have to call the admissions office and they will give you directions on how to do so... I am actually a very similar applicant to you. 3.9 GPA, top 15 school etc etc etc. I visited TC last year and spoke with a professor in my program and what she told me to do for the statement is be as clear as possible. She said its ok to go two pages as long as you're clearly addressing the questions they ask in the 'guide to admissions'. Work experience, graduate ambitions, professional ambitions, research interests/aspirations, why TC?, how can TC help you reach your goals... thats what she said to include in the statement. She also said it is very important to get your app. in by the Jan. 15th deadline..
good luck
