I received an email this morning that I was accepted to Dalhousie. I've accepted U of T already so I will be declining but wanted to let others know who may be waiting! -

Does anyone know if there is a group chat or FB group for those who are going to U of T next year? -

Hi everybody! This year I was offered admission to U of T, McGill, and Western. This feels great because last year I was rejected from U of T and waitlisted at Western. I took the year to work as an EA and gain more experience to enhance my application overall. I know the feeling but please try to keep your head up and don't lose hope if you didn't make it in this round - it really is so competitive. My top choices are U of T and McGill. I'm very much leaning towards choosing U of T so I don't have to move out of the province and I really like the structure of the program (cycling between academic and placement units so you can focus on one area at a time). The faculty seems incredible too. I was wondering if anyone has insight or if there are any current U of T SLP students browsing this forum who can elaborate on their experience in the program. Any insight is appreciated!! Thanks -

Did anyone else receive a call from Western? I saw my offer last night but didn't expect to get a call as well. -

I'm feeling the exact same. I have work early tomorrow morning but at the same time feel like I want to stay up so I have the night to process whatever the outcome is. But that also means it may just be a sleepless night lol. Last year I was rejected from U of T and waitlisted at Western so there's a wholeee lot of deja vu going on right now lol. Wishing everyone good luck & sending everyone positive vibes -

Thank you for your insight! I really appreciate it. I agree - I think I didn't focus enough on the characteristics that would make a great SLP. I felt like I did at the time, but looking back I feel like it could've been stronger and I could have been more specific. Or maybe I didn't have enough to back it up. Or maybe I'm just being hard on myself lol. I definitely think my statement of intent is much stronger this time around as I tweaked my focus, talking about why I would make a good SLP and having actual work experience as an EA to use for examples. I used the same references for this round and got accepted to McGill. I took multiple courses with these professors so I'm not sure that was the area I was lacking. It's really hard to say! I try not to dwell on it and I guess I'll just have to see come April 3rd whether or not U of T accepts me. It's nice to know that I have McGill to fall back on though. U of T and McGill are my top choices. Goes to show that GPA isn't everything and you definitely need to present yourself as a well-rounded applicant, as you said. -

My idea is that I mainly lacked hands-on experience. I didn't get any feedback about why I was rejected though. I was also in the final year of my undergraduate degree and someone on this forum suggested it could've been because I had prerequisites in progress? I didn't really understand how that would affect my application though. I think my application is stronger this time around. My sGPA is higher at a 3.94 and I'm also currently working as an EA to help boost my application. I also improved my statement of intent as I had more experience to talk about compared to last year. It was really discouraging at first but I learned a lot working in this position and I feel more (cautiously) optimistic knowing I have some experience to back up my drive to become a SLP. It goes to show that admissions can be really unpredictable. Wishing everyone good luck! -

Hi, I don't mind sharing! I agree that the waiting and anticipation is really tough. Last cycle I had a sGPA of 3.91. I had about 110 hours of volunteer experience at SLP clinics but it was only remote work because of the pandemic. I was waitlisted at Western and rejected from U of T. This year I'm working as an Educational Assistant for a special needs school that doubles as a therapeutic clinic and recreational centre. I'm hoping this experience and my direct work with SLPs will elevate my application this time around. I'm applying out of province to Dalhousie and McGill to hopefully increase my odds of getting in. -

I'm not sure but mine say the same thing and I know for sure my referees submitted. I wonder if they just don't update it? -

To those applying to McGill, do any of you exceed the 21 total credits they ask for the prerequisites? I have 24. The only reason I do is because my stats course was a full year course and was a total of 6 credits rather than 3 like they suggest. I feel like it's fine because in the application portal it says a minimum of 3 but I don't know if I should reduce the 18 credits they ask for which includes linguistics, psychology and other relevant areas credits. I'm pretty sure it would be okay if I go over but would like some clarity to be sure! Thanks -

Sorry I'm no help but I'm applying to McGill and I have the same question... The information on their website are very vague about where to upload these supporting documents. Did you happen to figure this out or does anyone else have insight on this? -

I have another question regarding Dalhousie lol. For referees it says, "Dalhousie University will only accept university, teaching hospital, and government email addresses [i.e. not Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, or business addresses]" I'm using a third reference as a work supervisor. However, her email address is associated with the special needs school I work at. I'm not sure if their system will allow that or consider it a 'business address' because I guess technically it is? Does anyone have any insight on this? Thank you -

I didn't think about it that way, that's very possible. Thank you! -

Hi! I'm hoping someone has insight as to the unofficial transcripts required by Dalhousie. I went to York for my undergraduate and paid for my unofficial transcript. According to Dalhousie's site, it says, "Transcripts should be in chronological order (oldest to most recent)." However, my unofficial transcript that I paid for naturally begins from my most recent courses, all the way down to my first year. It's just the formatting of the transcript but I'm not sure if that's going to be a big deal since Dalhousie requested it the other way around. I don't know how meticulous they are about these sorts of things. Thanks! -

Hi! I have a question to those who are applying to Dalhousie. For schools such as U of T, Western, and McGill, they allow your referees to work on their references before you submit your application. From my understanding for Dalhousie you have to manage your time accordingly because your references receive an email link only once your application is submitted. Can anyone confirm if this is true or maybe I'm misunderstanding? -

Thanks for your response! Interesting - so would that mean only the results of the written portion counts towards your application? -

Is anyone able to confirm if the CASper test has a section in which you answer via a video response? Or is it all typed responses? -

Hi everyone! I'm a second time applicant this year. I'm applying to both U of T and Western. To those who have been in the same boat, do you recommend completely starting over with your SOI? I feel like I had a pretty strong statement but would like to hear about your experience! I'm now currently working as an Educational Assistant at a special needs school so will definitely add thoughts/ideas about that. Do you think it's worth it to completely start over or alter certain areas where I see fit? Sorry if this is a silly question, but would help to hear what others did in the same position. Thanks in advance
