Some behind the veil admission committee advice I got the other day that I found helpful. As we all know if a department doesn't fill all their possible funded spots they might lose the funded spot the following year and it can be very difficult to get it back. Thus, if you have been accepted to multiple schools and know you won't be attending one, do let them know as quickly as you can. On top of that, if you are on a waiting list and don't plan to attend -- also let them know, so they don't go through the whole process of accepting you and maybe miss the opportunity to give the spot to someone else. On the other side, if you are on a waiting list and it is your top school, also let them know! Then they know there's a good chance you will accept the offer and is *maybe* more likely to make you an offer! Hope this helps!

I'm so sorry. That absolutely sucks. I wish university's would let departments know about funding before applications. Could have at least spared the money and disappointment!

No... nothing. I was too scared to contact them prior to application, cause their website was so serious about "READ EVERYTHING BEFORE TALKING TO US!!!!!!" Haha, so alas I am useless... sorry! Did you apply anywhere else??

Oh with a dependent I have no idea how people do it. I haven't heard of many 30k's in music, but I might be wrong! (STEM of course has higher stipends.) I'm so sorry!! Perhaps reach out to the uni and ask about additional fellowship options? Another option is to check if there is a union, they might have additional support for parents. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Depending on where it is, 23K is on the higher end, unless it is in a major city. I'm currently doing a MA and mine is waaaay less, that being said I live in very cheap student housing and use the school food pantry to survive without any extra loans. (Oh, and I don't have a car.) It's doable, but do make sure your health insurance is good and includes dental and eyes.

Wow... Busy time ahead! Congrats on the acceptance and interviews! I had my first interview yesterday with Pitt, and have been overthinking it ever since.

Welcome to music!! I was actually just speaking to my advisor about it. She said when she applied, she's young so not too long ago, interviews were not standard at all. They actually only did interviews for their "maybe" candidates. I think this has changed to becoming somewhat standard. That being said, anxiously going through past results, ethnomusicology doesn't seem that big on it, but might also change! I've heard from 2 schools: one straight to admission and one interview invite.

THIS IS SILENCE IS TOO MUCH!!!!!! Complete silence from 7 of the 8 schools I applied to. I still haven't heard from a Dec 1 school, Indiana -- not music dept but ethnomusicology and folklore department.

Sorry for barging in on the convo like a boomer mother overhearing a conspiracy theory in the produce section of a Target. You heard on New Year's Eve?? Whaaaat? This changes the whole "when will I hear" monologue in my head. Now, I simply have to set an alarm every hour while sleeping to check my emails, all the online portals, and GradCafe. Jokes, not going that crazy...yet.

Oh, my pleasure! This waiting sucks and I'm sure all my friends are so tired of listening to me carry on and on and on about the process, so talking to a stranger on the internet might save my friendships! Interestingly, mine also blurs those lines but ultimately I decided that I prefer the approach of ethnomusicologists. For me music is most interesting when viewed as a cultural object rather than an art form, which lends to interdisciplinary work. But who knows! I still think I don't know enough about anything to really make any claim, or decision... Then again isn't that the basis for the academic pyramid scheme? Anyway, I applied to: Uni of Illinois - Urbana/Champaign -- Musicology and UCSC --Music, the rest ethno: Indiana, Duke, NYU, CUNY, Columbia, Uni of Pittsburgh. I received an acceptance from Illinois with strong funding leads (or that's what I am telling myself to stay sane) and dead silence from everyone else (again convincing myself that ethno's work differently than musicologists or theorists).

Hiii, only discovered the forum section today. Dying while waiting. Sad that this year's page is not as active as last year's page, or perhaps it is better for our mental health. Anyway, applied for PhD programs in mostly ethnomusicology -- some general music/musicology programs where I wanted to work with someone specific. Wishing us all many emails on Tuesday that start with "congratulations."
