ono, that's a real bummer i dont have many choices to pick from and uc is really perfect for me in terms of research fit. i might just dip into my savings so i dont have to live like a caveman. yesss 23k is barely enough. i'll probably have to find summer funding to supplement it.

yup, haha. do you know if that's the norm? cost of living (especially housing) is so expensive in california so i am worried about finances. graduate student poverty is real

my offers are 50% TA for 21k~23k per acad year (9-month), 4 years (i have relevant MA), summer funding not guaranteed. 28~33k sounds a lot more generous than mine. wondering if it's ok / how to negotiate for a better funding package...

ah i applied there as well! guess i will be expecting rejections. are their open houses in-person or virtual? will you be attending if it's an in-person event? quite curious about how schools are planning visit days with covid. i wont be attending an upcoming in-person visit since i'm not from the us (too expensive and troublesome to fly over), and i feel like i will miss out on getting to know the people, environment, and culture at the dept before decisions :(

hey there, seems like there's not many masters applicants this year. not unusual since many programs dont require ma. i will be completing my ma before starting my phd, and wanted to give you some encouragement^^ if you want to chat more, do join us at the other thread! it's mostly phd applicants there but the thread is not exclusive to phd. we'll all be grad students together anyway so if you need some support~

yeah that might be the reason! during my interview, my poi told me ucsb is very quant-focused and she doesnt recommend students to get qual training here. nevertheless, great to hear that you're shortlisted at many great schools. congratulations!! i think it's different for every school. i heard some schools have visiting days to catch "red flags" (so almost everyone gets offers) while others do it as a way to get to know candidates and assess fit (they make additional cuts based on the visiting day). still, getting an invitation means you're otw to an acceptance! dont fret too much about it and use the chance to get to know the program and community... if you get multiple offers it will help you to decide where to go^^ all the best!!!!!

didnt post on the results page but i got an unofficial admissions email from my poi yesterday!! still waiting for the official letter to come in. did you interview with any faculty?

i had an informal interview of sorts with my poi from ucsb in late dec. i don't know if they interview all applicants they're interested in, but she mentioned they will invite shortlisted candidates for a virtual visit day sometime in jan / feb. haven't heard from them since :< not sure if anyone here applied to wisconsin-madison (comm arts)?? just finished an interview with my poi from comm sci track & she said they're rolling out interviews this week
