  1. what do we think is the holdup w/ NYU otherwise?? I knowwww I opted out of MA consideration and I still haven't heard back. I would guess its a waitlist but like....why would they not just tell you that
  2. Also is anyone else still waiting on NYU..? I am still and it is physically painful
  3. Just got a response from UCLA, they told me what spot I was in on their waitlist and roughly when they would know more info about my chances. Hope this is helpful @phdhell @swanronson!!
  4. Also waitlisted at UCLA; if you get in off the waitlist, I assume you're not able to visit before making a decision? That's kind of terrifying lol. That being said, if you're in at UCLA and don't plan on attending pleaseeee turn your offer down I would be much obliged
  5. I'm also waiting on NYU and I know I asked not to be considered for the MA program. Dunno what the holdup here is, I emailed them as well and got a response saying they're still making decisions and that I'll hear back when they decide. Pain
  6. Has anyone gotten their rejection from Harvard gov yet? Still waiting for my portal to update/an email
  7. I'm waiting on those exact 3 places as well lol, should we just email and ask at this point?
  8. Is anybody else still waiting on Duke, NYU, or UCLA? Should I email and ask for a status update? I know they sent out a couple acceptances but I'm not sure if they're just taking forever to send rejections or if status updates are still trickling out.
  9. Hey it's tough for us APs this cycle, I've heard of many places taking 1 maybe 2 americanists per cohort. Maybe next cycle everywhere will want a bunch of APs and we'll get our shining moment then
  10. Ah okay, fingers crossed for good news!
  11. @DanTheGrad have you still not heard back from Michigan? I thought they put out decisions a while ago at this point
  12. I'm still waiting on 6 schools, not counting Duke, UCLA, and NYU since I'm assuming rejection from them. This is my first cycle, but I feel like it's insanely late to be waiting on that many places still; are results coming out super late this year, or is this largely standard?
  13. I second this; I did my undergrad at Michigan, and I know some professors don't even look at the GRE as a matter of policy, whereas some professors care about it a lot. The former group says it's a poor indicator of success potential (and it's inequitable for a bunch of reasons), and the latter group cares mostly about the quant scores, especially if you don't have a quant background. How much the GRE matters depends on who's on your admissions committee, it's pure, blind luck. If you get a bunch of profs who care about quant scores, and you have a strong GRE but not a ton of research experience, you might get in over someone who's been an RA at some prestigious research institution. Or, if you get a ton of profs on your admissions committee who don't consider the GRE, your strong quant score isn't going to help you at all. It's literally all chance. I did TERRIBLY on the quant section, like truly so poorly, and the one place I've gotten into so far required I submit GRE scores, and is ranked higher than places I've been rejected from where the GRE was optional and I didn't submit. None of this makes any sense and none of it is standardized, you just have to hope that the people on your admissions see your potential and decide to take a chance on you. I'm not sure if that makes people feel better or worse, but we control so little of what goes on here; the odds will land in your favor at some point! If it doesn't work out this time, we can always apply again
  14. If we haven't heard anything from Duke, UCLA, NYU, or Columbia, should we just assume rejection? Why do schools stagger their acceptances and rejections like that, like what could they gain from that?
  15. Also claiming a UNC acceptance! AP subfield. Email from POI
  16. Yeah this makes a lot of sense. I didn't think it would matter much either, but got to thinking of it bc most of my applications had a question asking where else I was applying. I answered honestly bc I didn't think about it, but I'm not sure what they'd want to know that for except to determine roughly where you/think you are as a candidate
  17. Do you think the old adage from college applications applies here? That if schools think you have a good shot at better ranked programs than them, they'll just reject you upfront, so as not to waste an offer? I used to hear people say this all the time about college and some professional schools (namely, law school), but would be interested to see if that's relevant here too.
  18. Quiet today so far!!! Are we in for another news-less day...?
  19. Obvi not sure who applies here and who doesn't but I think it was only sent to applicants who self-identified on their apps as POC. It's for a panel or something about POC mentorship in Grad/Prof school. I totally missed that part at first so wanted to point it out in case. If you do identify as POC and didn't get the email, I wouldn't worry anyway, the first line is VERY clear that it's intended for both admitted AND prospective students.
  20. I got this too, my sense is it's generic email they send to all applicable GSAS applicants, unfortunately. Hopefully NYU releases decisions soon though!!
  21. What schools do we think will release next?
  22. If we haven't heard from Duke at this point is it likely a rejection? No changes in portal for me yet
  23. Absolutely not. There are so many applicants for so few spots at all of these places that at least half of this is blind luck. Safety schools don't work for PhD applications; you might get the boot from a program ranked in the 40s and then get into a T20. That's part of why this is so hard! The odds will land in your favor at some point!!! You got this.
  24. You're still waiting on a bunch though, you got this! What if you get like 6 acceptances in a month from now, all in one week? That'll make the early rejections feel SO worth it
