  1. Anyone else entering the Fall 2011 class at Johns Hopkins University?
  2. Thanks for all the suggestions! Good luck to those of you taking the GREs soon!
  3. Thanks for the reply! The majority of the profiles I've seen here that got accepted to Ivy Leagues have statistics way higher than mine, but then I see the ocassional one or two profiles that are similar to mine who were accepted, and that gave me perhaps an irrational hope. I just wanted to know if the Stanford adcom would see my application and just laugh at it, or if they would give it at least a moment's consideration. I guess you're saying you'll never know if you don't try, so I'll try. How about schoos like UT Austin, or UMich?
  4. I took a diagnostic paper practice test before studying and got a 500 Q. After a month of studying, I took a PowerPrep Practice test and got a 690Q. Now with 3 weeks left until I take my GREs, is there any chance at all that I can boost up my score to be mid-high 700s? How do I do this? *Panic*
  5. I've been going through the profiles posted here, and yet I still can't really figure out what my chances are of getting into schools, or what schools I am competitive for. Any thoughts would be most appreciated! Major: Environmental Engineering (Top 10 private undergrad) GPA: 3.29 GRE: Taking them in September, practice scores are around 720 V, 690 Q Research: One summer doing cancer research (completely unrelated to my field), 3 design projects, 2 award-winning posters presented at state and national professional conferences, potential relevant research project I could start fall of senior year Other: Dean's List once, industry-related internship one summer, calculus tutor, went on Global Brigades trip, exec board for my residential hall So, should I forget about IVY league schools (Stanford, MIT, Berkeley)? Do I have any kind of chance at all? Which schools would I seem competitive for (UT Austin, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, UMIch, Duke, any other suggested schools)? Thanks very much!
  6. Are SOPs supposed to be dry, extended versions of a cover letter? Basically going into technical detail of your accomplishments, your future research goals, and your fit? Or are should you try to frame your SOP in a creative manner, like an undergraduate personal statement (i.e. story format, funny anecdote in the intro)? Is there any room at all for some creativity or whimsy here, or is this just supposed to be a professional, serious, albeit dry, statement?
  7. I've recently made the decision to apply to grad school, but have now just learned that undergrad research is essential to getting into a top-tier program. I haven't done any research at all pertaining to my field, only two poster publications presented at a professional conference and some design projects. Would it still be beneficial if I tackled a research project during the fall of my senior year, or is it too late?
  8. What are the policies (if there are any) on retaking the GREs? For example, do schools take the average of all your scores? Do they only take the most recent score? Or do some schools only accept your first score? Thanks
