The reason I didn't name the programs is because when I went back to check on articles I'd read, most were written by people who were no longer teaching in their programs, so I doubted they'd be of any help.

I guess if you still want to know, here are some examples of the more helpful ones on application advice. All three mention preferring to either get people of all ages in their programs or preferring candidates who took time off after undergraduate.

It's an opinion I've seen posted a lot by people actually in these programs that younger applicants, especially ones right out of undergrad, are less preferred by adcoms, who want people with more life experience. If anything, it'd be easy for me to hop on the ageism train and say "the system is working against me" because I'm right out of my undergraduate, but I honestly believe that it comes down to the writing.

Either way, I've said my piece, and I genuinely hope things work out for you.

You should by now be familiar with the troll's voice, no matter the accounts/personalities he hides behind. Ogilvy, empathy1 are his more moderate accounts with a little less vitroil to their posts, the third personality being the one that is plain vile, gets repeatedly, and always coming back in new accounts. But I'm convinced all three or more belong to the same person.

Found out I'm waitlisted at Charleston for fiction! Which is a huge surprise, really. I thought it was too late for anything another than a rejection. Emily Rosko wrote to me via email that they are accepting 6 writers this year. Wondering if a spot will open up.. haven't heard much about Charleston in the forum. Wish me luck, I guess!

    Congrats! And good luck.

  3. Got in at University of Alabama (Prose) off the waitlist.

This is my first time applying and I felt I got sooooo many things wrong like applying to only two programs and using a style for my SoP that the program's website said specifically not to use. Not to mention how different my writing sample looks now from when I submitted in November, making me feel like I submitted trash.

I can almost say with certainty that I'm going to Alabama cos even though the second program (University of Florida) haven't notified, I don't see any major attraction that can sway me from going to Alabama.

Another L for the "New Yorker test" btw lol

Does anyone else ever have the perverse urge to write stupid CVS paperbacks under a penname to make money? Like, those harlequin romance ones that they sell for five bucks in the greeting card aisle

There should be better reaction buttons for comments here. Cos this comment here is gold. I definitely have considered this!

    I'm waiting to hear from:

    • UMass Amherst (interviewed)
    • UFlorida
    • UNLV
    • BU
    • Iowa (likely rejection, though I don't think all acceptances have been notified yet, could be wrong)

I got good news from South Carolina, though the stipend isn't the greatest.

I'm also waiting to hear from Florida. I only applied to two schools, Florida and Alabama and I already got on the waitlist for the latter. Actually feels good to see another Florida applicant here, even tho we might be competing against each other. Good luck to us.

Yes, workshop offer still standing for anyone interested! I have a lot of spare time and workshopping is one of my favorite things to do, lol.

Anyone who needs this should take up MDP on this offer. They're extremely good at it and they make the whole thing so cool and fun too lol. They could be one of the best at it, I don't care what anyone says. ?

This would be a workshop offer for other fiction writers, or are you comfortable working on poetry as well?

I can help, if you would have me. I write fiction (& a tiny bit of poetry) but I read a LOT of poetry and my poet friends have repeatedly remarked that my poetry workshopping is great.
