TFN

Hi everyone, Sorry I may sound like I am ranting right now, but I just took a hit by failing one of the class with a C within my first year of PhD and do not know how to think or what to do right now. What happened was this class grade was based on two exams, one is a midterm and one final. I experienced some health circumstances when came the midterm and had to make up for the exam when I was not fully recovered...the grade came back really bad. During the second half of the term, the midterm grade really affected my mind and also I was over-worried with lab rotation, therefore neglected my study...which was entirely my fault; then there came my final grade. I ended up joining my favorite lab, but failing the class at the same time. I was really hoping to apply for several fellowships, but how big of an impact will this failing grade has on the application? I will have to re-take the class next year to replace the academic warning, but this year is the only time left I have for most the applications. What to do now? My mentor is having some really high hopes on me as most of his students had/having several fellowships. I don't want to disclose the fact that I'm failing a class just yet worrying it will affect my stance while I just joined the lab right now....I literally feel like an idiot. Please suggest anything you have in mind. I really appreciate it. P/S: My undergrad transcripts were not that great either. Should I giving up applying for things all together at once? ?
