A school that rejected me reached out today to say that I was a finalist and they MIGHT have a spot for me as they are trying to take on a few more writers, but likely won’t be able to confirm until closer to June. “After the national deadline”

has this ever happened before? Is it too good to be true?

What a wild day it’s been

I just got accepted by a program, but they told me more information about the teaching assistantship is forthcoming (by the end of April) and are allowing me to decide whether or not I want to attend on May 1st. I’m still on the NYU waitlist as well. Looks like I may be going somewhere this year after all!

Hi all!! It's been a while since I've been in here, I've spent the past month agonizing about decisions haha. I visited both Manhattanville and Stony Brook (I rejected The New School pretty quick because I realized it didn't offer what I wanted for teaching opportunities and it would be too expensive anyway). I was really hesitant about attending either school and was considering just reapplying next year, but after visiting SBU, I've decided that it's the right program for me! I do want to give a shoutout to Manhattanville as a program that seems to be on the rise, the whole process was very personal and inviting and the director is doing a lot of work to make it a really good place to be, but I felt that its current state didn't fit my needs and SBU was much better for me location-wise. The teaching fellowship pathway they offer is a really great opportunity though, it makes the program almost fully funded. I'd recommend looking into it for anyone applying next year, especially in NY.
This forum has been a great help, and I've really loved seeing everyone's news and talking with you all! Thanks for helping me get through the season! ❤️

The spirit hit and I just started writing a new SOP for the next app season. In the dead quiet of the night, it feels clearer and more sure of itself than the one before. More able to dally and parry.
I went into the 2024 app season with a lot of heart, honesty, and good intentions, but it was not enough. Honesty and raging desire aren't all it takes, I fear. I'm going to try to use the months between now and December to develop and polish new pieces, engage with other writers and the writing world, and find security in my own (he)art. I have my eyes on a few programs and will try to prepare better for them. I also plan to make some changes in my personal life - move to a different place, start a small thing, and save some money. Big, big plans, but wish me luck, y'all.
Congratulations to everyone going this year. Save some seats for those of us coming later. Anyone who wants to workshop writing or talk general MFA tips and strategy, hit me up.

For those of you who are on waitlists and are losing hope -- I 1000% respect and understand that a waitlist in certain ways can be even more nerve-racking than an outright rejection. I want to offer maybe a small glimmer of hope? Without causing anyone any more stress; I really hope I don't add to that. I've spoken to multiple people in each accepted student cohort from multiple schools (in each genre) that are actively debating other offers. Some people who aren't on grad cafe or draft. I've been scrambling to talk to as many people as possible both incoming and in the programs themselves as I really dig deep and try and make the 'right' decision for myself. I'd hate to hate my MFA experience, so I really am no closer to deciding what in the actual hell I'm going to do. I just say all this to say: I think there will be substantial waitlist movement this year. I don't want to give information that's not mine to give, so I'll speak for myself. I'm debating offers from NYU, Brown, Iowa, and Michigan for poetry. I have to turn 3 of those down. Others are debating attending other programs from all over. If you're on the waitlist, don't count yourself out just yet!!!! Much love to all ❤️

    Hello all ❤️
I too was waitlisted for NYU. Attending would be a dream come true.
NYU also waitlisted me last year and they were very kind but also a bit mysterious. Does anyone know anything about their process?

okay, now that i'm on the NYU waitlist for fiction.
i've heard getting off it is a mixed bag--i know some schools do rank their waitlist, and i know NYU may or may not do this for their full residency CR M.F.A.. the NYU website makes public that the waitlists can extend well into the summer, which--to my knowledge--is still true, as i'm aware of a candidate from 2019 who said they were admitted from the waitlist on july 8th. other schools will try to compile a diverse waitlist so that they can replace someone who declines their offer of admission with somebody who will complement the class makeup similarly; this is what i think may be going on with NYU.
either way, i've accepted that my odds of shifting into an acceptance are inconclusive and that sitting on the WL is just as much of a crapshoot as applying to a program in the first place.
what i'm worried about is the potential funding package. i'm guessing NYU's system for granting fellowships and funding is priority-based, which probably means their most coveted accepted students will get the packages with the full tuition remission and the stipends. accordingly, the students NYU's committee has deemed the next most promising would get less and less until they chose the bottom of their incoming class, which--according to their website--gets 50% tuition remission and no stipend.
NYU is my top choice and i would really like to go if i get off the waitlist. i would take literally any grant or fellowship they have available if i could get the full remission and the stipend i'd need to actually attend their program this year. does anyone know of anything i may be able to start doing in the meantime to prepare? i'm conducting some more comprehensive research on NYU's funding as well as external opportunities (which are fewer, farther between, and not as lucrative as one might hope) just in case. but i honestly think i will be out of luck until next year even if i happen to get accepted.

Huh, I got an acceptance to The New School with a 30% tuition funding offer! I really thought they were done, perhaps this is the "lower half of the alphabet" curse again 🤣 or something else. Who knows, admissions offers are a nebulous magical force.
With NYU wailists and Columbia acceptances coming out now, hoping for good news for everyone! 🙏 and congrats to those who've gotten that good news already today!
