  1. The computer vision lab (CVL) is one of the laboratories of the Center for Automation Research (CFAR) at the UMD. The lab is the collaboration between people working in vision in both the CS and ECE departments. Prof. Rama Chellappa (ECE) and Prof. Larry Davis (CS) are two big names in the computer vision community. They are very highly regarded by fellow researchers. You can check Google Scholar to have an idea of the impact of their research. One additional information, the "godfather of computer vision" (in Kanade's words), Prof. Azriel Rosenfeld (deceased), was the director of CFAR. Furthermore, their research projects cover most areas in computer vision, ranging from tracking, surveillance, object recognition to face recognition, learning in vision, etc... I'm gonna turn down a fellowship offer from a top 10 CS department to go to UMD.
  2. UMD is the place for computer vision. It has one of the top notch vision groups in the US. I am heading there as well, but in ECE.

    Choices

Boston University has a quite strong computer vision group: http://www.cs.bu.edu/groups/ivc/. I am not aware of anyone from the CS dept, Rochester who is well-known in computer vision. UNC may still be your best choice given the ranking (20th in CS ranking, USNews 2009). You may want to contact Svetlana Lazebnik (student of Jean Ponce from UIUC) there.

UNC-CH if you have a chance to work with Marc Pollefeys.
  5. No, I just want to have more information to make the final decision. But I don't know whether I can arrange my time for the trip or not 'cause I'm writing my Master thesis atm.
  6. I'm also planning to visit them from Australia.
  7. I just got the acceptance email as well. Official email and postal mail will follow in the next few days. I just know that I got admitted with aid (TA or RA) and 1 year Alumni Fellowship.
  8. Anyone heard from the ECE department - UMD? I checked the Apra website and it said that " a decision has been made regarding your application". I checked Testudo but it's still "decision pending". They wouldn't answer the decision through phone or email.
  9. Thanks leogk. Good luck to your applications too.
  10. Yes, it's very hard to get into any top CS program now. Btw, leogk, do you have any "insider information" about when the results for RI would be out? I am applying to RI as well.
  11. @tedjj: Hopefully we will know something next week. Do you mind sharing your profile?
  12. Congrats to all of you who have received acceptances!!! I am applying to MIT, CMU, UIUC, UWisc, UMD, JHU, Michigan for PhD in computer vision. I haven't heard from any uni yet . I think my chance for UIUC and Michigan is quite low now as many people have received admissions from these 2. Btw, here's my profile Undergraduate: Australia. Master: from the same uni in Australia (started in March 2008). Research Exp: 2 years experience. Publications: 1 CVPR, 1 ICIP, 3 regional conferences (2 best paper awards), 1 IEEE Trans submitted. GRE: 1170 (Q:780, V: 390 what a shame!!!). TOEFL: NA
