  1. Based on what you wrote it's very close between Notre Dame and UT. Princeton is a no. Notre Dame has the experienced advisor and the opportunity for you to be with your SO, but UT has the better "ranking" and location. I think Notre Dame wins by a sliver of a margin here. Good luck and I trust you'll make the right decision!
  2. For University of Alberta the class sizes depend on the stream. So for health policy they take 20 students, health promotion 20 students, and for epidemiology only 14 students. Some streams have even smaller class sizes. I read they had around 500 applicants this year so it was extremely competitive.
  3. Hey everyone! Hope you all are hanging in there during this difficult time. In 2017 I applied to 7 schools for a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and got 7 rejection letters LOL. I was so sad but just decided to enter the workforce and put off my MPH aspirations. After getting laid off at the start of the pandemic, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in public health and that I would give the MPH applications one last shot. Took me 2 years of upgrading my marks (from a 78% --> 89% average) and getting relevant public health work and research experience, and I somehow got admission into two MPH schools this go-around (In a VERY competitive year). I'm extremely thankful and proud of myself. That being said, I'm struggling to choose between the two schools and I'm hoping for some input from internet strangers. I'll list their PROS and CONS below. University of Victoria: PROS: 1) online-learning format which is convenient; might be able to work part-time while completing the degree. 2) Tuition & ancillary fees = $7,000 per year. 3) No need to make living arrangements in a new city (save money) CONS: 1) Not a very prestigious school; wondering about the quality of the program. 2) Sometimes online learning can be challenging. University of Western Ontario: PROS: 1) One-year program; can enter workforce a full year sooner. 2) Higher ranked than UVictoria CONS: 1) $36,000 for tuition & ancillary fees! Not even including living costs, which would have to be arranged because I don't live in Ontario. The program does not accept provincial/federal student loans/grants. 2) Possibly rushed? I'm not sure you can learn everything in one year. Just looking for people's opinions. A lot of family/friends have suggested I stick with UVictoria, but I'm still conflicted. What would you do if you were in my position?
  4. Sorry to hear that, but email the SPH office. They should reply quickly to let you know. Based on my own experience and that of friends the pre-screening status is usually not good news, however it could be coincidental. You should email the department to know for sure.
  5. Hey congrats on your UWO acceptance! I'm sorry about UAlberta, I was sad to find out I was rejected because it was my first choice. Just based on what I've witnessed myself and with friends and people on this forum, the "pre-screening" status is usually not good news but we don't know for sure. So there's a bit of hope still. Definitely email the sph office. I find they reply quickly.
  6. I got accepted into other schools is what I meant to write! I only applied to the epi stream at the University of Alberta.
  7. I know ?. It's 3x more expensive than any other Canadian MPH program. I'm considering declining the offer just because I don't have that kind of money.
  8. Starting a thread for people admitted into the mph program at the university of Western Ontario. Current students welcome! My biggest concern is the tuition. Why on earth is this not covered under student loans? Is this school for rich people or something? My bad for not looking into this before applying, but I did not expect that I'd have to pay 36 000 dollars out of pocket!
  9. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but for the University of Alberta mph program, if your application is still at "pre-screening" at this stage, it's most likely you will be rejected. Email the sph contact and they'll update your file within 24 hours. That's what I did. I was rejected from the epi stream but got acceptances elsewhere thankfully. Good luck everyone.
  10. For anyone waiting on the University of Alberta, if your application status is still on "pre-screening" it's a sign you'll likely be rejected. This is a pattern I've noticed. I was rejected this morning after emailing them for an update. So just email them if you need an immediate answer. I did receive an offer from western but the tuition is RIDICULOUS. 36K?? And no student loans allowed?? Is anyone else wondering how they're going to pay for this??
