  1. The NRC (National Research Council) launched a project in 2005 to assess research doctoral programs. The assessment is supposed to include rankings of programs in various disciplines to update the previous rankings released in 1995. Although data collection was supposed to begin in 2005, that data collection and the entire project have been repeatedly delayed without public explanation. After the most recent delay the NRC announced that the new assessment report would be released in February 2009. February has come and gone with no further date set for release of the assessment data, report, or rankings. The official site for the study is at http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/Resdoc/index.htm

  3. Congratulations Cornell07. I am very glad to hear that it worked out so well for you!! The Yale program sounds like a great match for your interests. Good luck!
  4. I wanted to say thank you to everybody at thegradcafe.com and especially to folks who posted about their experiences this year in the history forum. The sharing of information and the sense of community provided at gradcafe was very helpful in a long, stressful process. Best of luck to all, both those accepted and planning for starting their programs and those planning for another admissions cycle next year. Cheers!
  5. Congratulations, synthla! Glad it worked out for you. Good luck to everyone else still waiting!!
  6. Most US graduate programs subscribe to a policy generated by the Council of Graduate Schools. That policy says that prospective graduate students should have until April 15 to consider offers of financial assistance including graduate fellowships, scholarships, and the like. You can see the precise wording of the policy and the list of participating schools at this internet address http://www.cgsnet.org/Default.aspx?tabid=201
  7. Congrats Cornell07!! Glad your wait paid off. Your persistence can serve as inspiration for the rest of us!
  8. Congratulations, Misterpat!!! That is wonderful news. Missouri has an excellent faculty!
  9. Congratulations on South Carolina! Congrats also to everybody else who has received good news this week. It is definitely a much tougher year for grad admissions than usual so every admission is reason for celebration!
  10. Congratulations, Rustonite!!! I'm very glad you received good news.
  11. I have noticed that the flip side of the very tough job market for history Ph.D.'s is that small and not-well-known universities are often filled with very high quality faculty. While the ranking and reputation of a graduate program are definitely factors to consider in deciding where to study, even at lower ranked and unknown programs we might well be taught by graduates of top schools and other very well-prepared faculty. Several unknown state schools near me with no particular academic reputation are blessed with very sharp history faculty members from UCLA, Duke, Virginia, Illinois, Columbia, Wisconsin, and etc. I can't speak from experience as to the particular schools that have been mentioned here, and don't know whether they are located in places folks would find congenial, but those schools may well have many fine faculty.
  12. Congratulations to everyone with good news. Condolences to folks with not so good news. It is a brutal process. Let's hope in the end everyone gets a chance to do interesting work somewhere.
  13. Big congratulations to those admitted to Chicago! Best wishes to everybody else, with hopes for good news to come!!
  14. Great news slawken on Harvard! Congratulations!!
  15. Congrats to all the people who have posted Emory, Ohio State, WashU and other acceptances today!! Let's hope there will be more good news for others tomorrow.
