  1. Definitely don't go to an unfunded MA when you have a PhD offer. You can always transfer out during your PhD, but two more years of MA + 60k a year at a private school like Duke is simply not worth it.
  2. I didn't apply there, but I doubt that the PhD acceptances haven't gone out yet...There is a chance, however, that you are on their waitlist? It's definitely worth it to send an email to ask. It happens to me for UCSB too. I haven't heard anything from them officially, but my MA advisor who knows their faculty pretty well said that I am probably waitlisted.
  3. I got an offer from NYU Cinema! They called yesterday. I think these are all great schools, probably just depending on which one offers the best funding and quality of life...Being in UK definitely gives you easier access to archives there, and sometimes UK degrees might be perceived as more prestigious than Canadian ones globally (which was the ultimate reason why I didn't apply to Concordia). This is, of course, a very problematic phenomenon, but also an important factor to consider.
  4. What do you work on? All great schools, but I love Concordia! Very strong emphasis on global media and got a lot of great scholars working on media technologies in recent years. BTW, I do plan to decline NYU offer soon (they are only giving me 2 weeks to consider anyway), so I hope this helps!
  5. I think the U.S. is similar when it comes to PhD application. Statement of purpose might sound a bit more loose than a thesis proposal, but I think the competition has become so intense that a good SOP has to be a feasible dissertation-size project. In any case, some likely questions (I've done 5 interviews so far) are: what's your project in simple terms (since many of our research can be so complicated nowadays)? What is your methodology and intervention? Where does the idea of your project come from? Why our school? I think almost all my interviews had these questions. They usually also try to leave 5 minutes for you to ask questions, so definitely take advantage of that.
  6. Me too! I thought I was a good fit there, but the department culture might have also shifted a lot with the new chair.
  7. I emailed but heard nothing lol. I don’t think they do interviews historically, but this year just seems odd..
  8. Has anyone heard anything from Brown? I am not sure what causes the delay, but their results should be out weeks ago based on the past timeline...
  9. Hey Kai! Nice to meet you. Feel free to DM me, and I happy to talk more : )
  10. Slightly unrelated: has anyone heard from USC's Cinema and Media Studies MA program? My friend applied and thought I'd gather more info here.
  11. I did! Their decisions usually come out the latest of all...Probably won't hear until early March for interview. Decisions come a week later.
  12. I didn't apply for UCLA, but my cohort member got accepted! Haven't heard anything from Berkeley though.
  13. You may be right! Hope there won't be too much of impact funding-wise
  14. Has anyone heard anything from UCSB? Had an interview 2 weeks ago and has not heard back ever since. In the past they seem to admit people pretty soon after the interview...
  15. Not yet! But given the past timeline, I think we will hear something soon.
  16. I'm talking about the Cinema and Media Studies department, but good to know the EALC timeline!
  17. Thanks! And UChicago also usually releases their results early in February, right? It's good that most decisions should be out by mid February.
  18. Good luck to you too! Do you know what are the programs that might post their results this week?
  19. Congrats!! I went to USC for my MA. I wasn’t in the East Asian program, but took quite a few classes there. It’s a great program :))
  20. Hey! I posted that on the result page! It was a pretty casual interview with a group of committee members. I assume that the decision will be posted in a few days?
  21. Hello! I thought I should contribute to the forum as well. I just had an interview with Harvard today, which is really the only East Asian program I applied to (others are all film and media studies). The interview was definitely more intense than I thought--initially my POI contacted me for a brief interview, but then four professors showed up, which ended up becoming more like a formal committee interview (though questions are still relatively casual). I work on Chinese film and media, so if anyone has similar experience to share (or just interview with Harvard East Asian), let me know!
  22. Hello! Very good to know that you are working on similar topics. Out of curiosity given our similar interests but different school strategies: what makes you want to apply to mostly East Asian programs than comp lit/film studies? I am mainly applying to film and media studies because of my interests and background in global art cinema (at least when I did my MA), and I feel more comfortable teaching intro-level film courses than language courses. I am definitely curious to hear your side of the story!
  23. Hi everyone! The forum seems to be quiet this year. I am applying to cinema and media studies phd programs, and I am happy to connect with other folks! I mostly work on media theory, urban space, and STS in the East Asian context (mostly China). My work is also quite interdisciplinary, and I have applied to a mix of film and media, and interdisciplinary phd programs such as USC, Brown, Berkeley, UCSB, NYU (MCC), Stanford (MTL), and Harvard (East Asian). I know that there is already a thread elsewhere, but given the limited traffic in the other section, I thought I should re-start here. But in case anyone wants to visit posts already there (you are welcome to repost here!). https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/139957-2023-applicants-in-cinema-studies-film-studies/ Looking forward to connecting with all of you!
