Hi all, I'm wondering if has anyone heard back from UCLA's MA/PhD track program?
I didn't apply there, but I doubt that the PhD acceptances haven't gone out yet...There is a chance, however, that you are on their waitlist? It's definitely worth it to send an email to ask. It happens to me for UCSB too. I haven't heard anything from them officially, but my MA advisor who knows their faculty pretty well said that I am probably waitlisted.

I research historical and contemporary film collectives across the UK and North America. Got a pretty relevant RAship lined up if I go to Concordia on post-colonial solidarity films which would be great. Supervisor at Cambridge works on feminist art and film collectives so would also be really relevant.
Did you get NYU Cinema Studies offer or MCC?
I got an offer from NYU Cinema! They called yesterday.
I think these are all great schools, probably just depending on which one offers the best funding and quality of life...Being in UK definitely gives you easier access to archives there, and sometimes UK degrees might be perceived as more prestigious than Canadian ones globally (which was the ultimate reason why I didn't apply to Concordia). This is, of course, a very problematic phenomenon, but also an important factor to consider.

Got waitlisted at NYU RIP. If anyone isn't planning on attending please do pull out ASAP
Got offers from Cambridge, Concordia and King's College London so I suppose I better make my choice. If anyone has any views on these other schools I would love to hear them!
What do you work on? All great schools, but I love Concordia! Very strong emphasis on global media and got a lot of great scholars working on media technologies in recent years. BTW, I do plan to decline NYU offer soon (they are only giving me 2 weeks to consider anyway), so I hope this helps!

Any tips on preparing for grad school interview? I've only done interviews for UK programs where the emphasis is on discussing the thesis proposal that is a core element of UK applications.
I think the U.S. is similar when it comes to PhD application. Statement of purpose might sound a bit more loose than a thesis proposal, but I think the competition has become so intense that a good SOP has to be a feasible dissertation-size project.
In any case, some likely questions (I've done 5 interviews so far) are: what's your project in simple terms (since many of our research can be so complicated nowadays)? What is your methodology and intervention? Where does the idea of your project come from? Why our school? I think almost all my interviews had these questions. They usually also try to leave 5 minutes for you to ask questions, so definitely take advantage of that.

Brown is a bust for me. Good luck, folks!
Me too! I thought I was a good fit there, but the department culture might have also shifted a lot with the new chair.

PLEASE! I'm hoping that a braver soul than mine will email them and report the reply on grad cafe... if interview requests were already handed out, I can rest somewhat easy knowing I'm rejected lol...
I emailed but heard nothing lol. I don’t think they do interviews historically, but this year just seems odd..

Has anyone heard anything from Brown? I am not sure what causes the delay, but their results should be out weeks ago based on the past timeline...

Hi Nomis!
I'm Kai, a first-year Film and TV studies grad student at Boston University. I'm planning to apply for some 2024 Film Study Ph.D. programs. Since I'm Chinese, I'm also interested in Asian Films and currently thinking to do further research on Chinese films or film theories. I'm really happy to meet you and looking forward to any good news from you! Wish you good luck with your interviews and applications!
Hey Kai! Nice to meet you. Feel free to DM me, and I happy to talk more : )

Slightly unrelated: has anyone heard from USC's Cinema and Media Studies MA program? My friend applied and thought I'd gather more info here.

Haven't heard anything from Brown; not sure about NYU. Did anyone else apply to NYU Tisch Cinema Studies?
I did! Their decisions usually come out the latest of all...Probably won't hear until early March for interview. Decisions come a week later.

I guess that's another rejection for me... So sad. Did your cohort member get an interview? Thanks a lot for the info!
Not entirely sure, but I think so!

Hope we get some interviews/offers soon! Good luck! ? Did anyone hear back from Berkeley or UCLA? My email is like dead silent and I'm so dead inside loooll
I didn't apply for UCLA, but my cohort member got accepted! Haven't heard anything from Berkeley though.

It's possible that the grad strike situation in the UCs has affected the whole decision rollout process, but that's just speculation.
You may be right! Hope there won't be too much of impact funding-wise

Has anyone heard anything from UCSB? Had an interview 2 weeks ago and has not heard back ever since. In the past they seem to admit people pretty soon after the interview...

Hi! Have you heard from CMS yet, just curious! Thank you!
Not yet! But given the past timeline, I think we will hear something soon.

UChicago EALC's website (not sure if that's the program you're referring to) says, "All admissions decisions will be released through the online application in mid-February," but they also indicate on the same page that applicants are notified by the department in March. So, a bit inconclusive!
I'm talking about the Cinema and Media Studies department, but good to know the EALC timeline!

Unfortunately I don't have much data to go on, but I checked some of the historic results (past few years) on the Results page and found a few (weak) trends:
-UW (Cinema): interviews clustered in early Feb.; decisions in mid-Feb.
-NYU Tisch (Cinema): mid-March
-Brown (Modern Culture and Media): mid-Feb
Take this with a grain of salt because this is pretty weak data to go off of, but in any case, I'm just hoping I hear something soon as my anxiety is through the roof. Good luck to all this week!
Thanks! And UChicago also usually releases their results early in February, right? It's good that most decisions should be out by mid February.

Good luck to you too! Do you know what are the programs that might post their results this week?

I heard back with an acceptance from USC! I am so happy that I am able to relax now for the rest of the application cycle and just take what comes my way.
Best of luck to everyone and I will continue to post results and contribute here so that everyone has much information as possible!
Congrats!! I went to USC for my MA. I wasn’t in the East Asian program, but took quite a few classes there. It’s a great program :))

Hey all, did anyone get an interview with UC Santa Barbara? One was posted on the results page...
Hey! I posted that on the result page! It was a pretty casual interview with a group of committee members. I assume that the decision will be posted in a few days?

Hello! I thought I should contribute to the forum as well. I just had an interview with Harvard today, which is really the only East Asian program I applied to (others are all film and media studies). The interview was definitely more intense than I thought--initially my POI contacted me for a brief interview, but then four professors showed up, which ended up becoming more like a formal committee interview (though questions are still relatively casual). I work on Chinese film and media, so if anyone has similar experience to share (or just interview with Harvard East Asian), let me know!

Hi Nomis! That's a good question. Partly it comes down to where the POI is; in some cases, I have applied to comp lit/film studies departments when there is a professor there who is specialized in an EAS-related area (in my case, modern Chinese film/lit/cultural history). But otherwise, I mainly applied to EAS departments based on my experience so far. I did my undergrad and am doing my master's in EAS departments, and really enjoy being around professors and other students working in EAS. In fact, my undergrad coursework was strongly focused on modern Chinese political history; it wasn't until recently that I began to explore film and literature, so I'd probably feel more competent teaching an into-level course on a topic other than film. I think being in an EAS dept. is a great way to share ideas and knowledge. For instance, having the opportunity to chat with a fellow grad student working on premodern literature or late-imperial history is great. I think that if I were in a comp lit or film studies department there might be a higher chance of being sort of an "academic island," where other people are studying the same kind of stuff (i.e., literature or film) as you, but might not have much else in common in terms of background knowledge. But this might also be a good thing, since it would allow me to deepen my understanding of the texts I research theoretically, globally, etc.
That makes sense! Thanks for sharing and good luck

Hi, Nomis. My work is very similar to yours! Looks like you and I have a few overlapping applications. Best of luck to you!
Hello! Very good to know that you are working on similar topics. Out of curiosity given our similar interests but different school strategies: what makes you want to apply to mostly East Asian programs than comp lit/film studies? I am mainly applying to film and media studies because of my interests and background in global art cinema (at least when I did my MA), and I feel more comfortable teaching intro-level film courses than language courses. I am definitely curious to hear your side of the story!

Hi everyone! The forum seems to be quiet this year. I am applying to cinema and media studies phd programs, and I am happy to connect with other folks! I mostly work on media theory, urban space, and STS in the East Asian context (mostly China). My work is also quite interdisciplinary, and I have applied to a mix of film and media, and interdisciplinary phd programs such as USC, Brown, Berkeley, UCSB, NYU (MCC), Stanford (MTL), and Harvard (East Asian).
I know that there is already a thread elsewhere, but given the limited traffic in the other section, I thought I should re-start here. But in case anyone wants to visit posts already there (you are welcome to repost here!).

Looking forward to connecting with all of you!

Definitely don't go to an unfunded MA when you have a PhD offer. You can always transfer out during your PhD, but two more years of MA + 60k a year at a private school like Duke is simply not worth it.
