  1. Which are the schools that one should apply to for a PhD in Sociology specializing in Social Psychology? I am most interested in schools with good placement record in academia. Thanks.
  2. Hi all, I am an international grad student accepted to a PhD program in Soc for fall 2009 enrollment. I have already got my I-20 and the program starts mid-august. When can I apply for my visa at the US embassy? I know that there is such a thing as applying too early. -Socio

    Notre Dame

This is a question directed to accepted students at ND, but anyone with the info can answer. I am just wondering what the standard funding package is at ND and UMass?
  4. What in the world is goin on with Rutgers? Has anybody heard anything yet?
  5. I have a friend (in an average economics PhD program) who seems to be worried about grades all the time (apparently grading is based on a curve). I thought that always sounded very "undergraduate" since graduate students should mostly be preoccupied with understanding material instead of whether or not they pass a class. My undergraduate degree is not in Sociology, but in a more quantiative field, so I am not familar with grading in Sociology. But I performed exceptionally as an undergraduate (although very few of my classes involved grading on a curve), still I am wondering how much Sociology PhD programs require you to obssess about grades? Is grading in graduate sociology based on a curve?
  6. Hi Folks, What is the best course of action as far as responding to a funding offer this far out from April 15 and you still have quite a number of schools to hear from? Accept and wait or notify the department that you will make your decision before April 15? Soc
  7. I have two questions/comments. First, where is the results page (so I could be another statistics)? Secondly, since some have heard about funding on this thread, should I interpret the following as "NO SOUP FOR YOU!"? "I am sure that funding your graduate career at Wisconsin is a concern. Some, but by no means all, students come here with support in their first year. For those who come with no advance support, many pick it up once they have arrived or soon after. Usually, if a student has a successful academic year, he or she will find funding through various kinds of assistantships by the second year. There are a variety of mechanisms to obtain support. Please visit the website http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/soc/grad/admissions.php#funding to see what some of these mechanisms are." I am surprised to even get admitted (given how my profile has been evaluated in this forum), but I, too, would be unable to attend without aid (unfortunately). I envy those who have gotten guaranteed funding. I wish everyone else luck with their apps this year! ~Socio
  8. For those of us who didn't get a word about funding, should we inquire or just patiently wait? Did anyone here inquire about funding?
  9. Yeah, but have you checked out Madison's placements?
  10. I am just curious - assuming the message implies admission in most cases, what's one to expect as far as financial aid? That is, I am well aware that Madison does admit students without financial aid, but what do you guys think are the chances of getting financial aid? I am just trying to determine how excited to be about this! LOL ~Socio P.S. Of course, the mere news of admission is very exciting and makes me more hopeful about my other applications, but UW-Madison is my first choice! (Then again, isn't it everybody's? lol)
