Updating the thread - I got waitlisted at UW. I got the feeling that would be the outcome after the interview, it wasn't my strongest and it was *so* rushed (I had 7 minutes to answer 3 questions - why UW, why now, and describe a challenge and how you overcame that) that I wasn't able to elaborate on what I thought was my relevance to the program.
Holding out for UNC, but the program seems to be focusing on smaller cohorts and has less funding this year (and maybe in the future?) so I'm also not optimistic about my chances.
I've also been applying to some European PhD positions...I'm thinking in the long run, that will be a better fit for me anyway. I've found some projects that really speak to me topic-wise and methodologically, with the possibility to do entirely qualitative dissertation research! No American program that I spoke to has been receptive to that.
I haven't heard anything back from the other programs I applied to. Time to start looking for a job!
