  1. I have just called and talked with Graduate Coordinator of UPitt. They haven't released any of their decisions, and not sure when they are going to send their decisions. I tried to specify the dates, but the coordinator was not happy about it and tried to ask my name. So, I tried not to tell my name and she didn't also tell the date vice versa.

I think we just have to wait for it.

Anyway, Does anyone got any news from UConn too? I am also waiting for a news from there. I have seen just one result report from Result page, however, I just want to make sure whether the results have been all released or not. Some of application page have been changed but the application status did not change at all.

I would wait. Because if you don't get funding it doesn't matter at all, since you should not attend a program that doesn't commit to you fully for at least 5 years. And honestly even then, I don't think this is a program you should consider attending.

By placements, I don't mean "careers" -- there should be a page on the Political Science PhD site that says "recent graduate placements" or "placement history" and it should list every graduate and where they landed. On the "careers in political science page" they are claiming Mark Huddleston as a "recent graduate". He is the RETIRED former president of the University of New Hampshire. The dude is old. He is 73!!!, and in no way a recent graduate. Listing him there is really shady and sketchy.

Look, I hate to be incredibly blunt, especially as people are celebrating acceptances. But even if they gave you full funding for 5 years, there's no way I would recommend anyone attend this program.

Yes. That's why I would wait for until all things are done. I have several schools to waiting for a decision. I will wait. Maybe I would not consider to contact them right away.

One of my professors in undergrad told me over and over: you should not be paying to attend a PhD program. They should be paying you a stipend. And there’s absolutely no reason to go into debt for a PhD program

That's why I am going to wait until they are going to offer me a scholarship. What I also heard is that, buffalo usually gives stipend and scholarship in second year to Koreans since they are quite suspicious to speaking abilities. That's what I heard directly from buffalo alumnus. Maybe I should ask them for job placement records.

Congrats on your acceptance. I would do A TON of research into Buffalo's program before you accept, even if a funding package comes through. Programs should be incredibly transparent -- on their websites -- about their recent graduate placement record. Any halfway decent program will have, in its grad student directory, a description of the student's research, and places for them to list awards and publications. And all programs should have a list of graduate students on the market. Buffalo has none of these things, AND they're admitting students without a guarantee of funding.

If your interest is staying in academia, you're in for an uphill battle. Sorry to be the downer and bearer of bad news, but it is not ok for programs to admit students without a guarantee of funding (and you should treat this like a waitlist rather than acceptance), and it's also not ok for programs to half-ass their student directory. If your interest is in earning a PhD and looking for government, think tank, or other industry jobs, that's a different calculation, but I still would not attend unless you are fully funded.

Since your decision letter made it clear that you will only receive funding if others decline, I do not think you should email right now. Most decisions have not been released. If they have not gotten back in touch by mid-March, you can email and ask for a timeline about decisions re: funding, but otherwise it's just going to make them question if you understood the offer letter or not.

Thanks for strong recommendation! I will thoroughly search into it. As I searched for recent careers, it has been searched in the website, though it seems not quite recent. Maybe I should ask DGS for more information for that now? Or, should I wait and send it the request little bit later?

Did they *tell* you that you didn't get funding, or has the funding offer letter just not come yet?

If it's the latter, I'd hold off - that's quite normal

The acceptance letter said, due to lack of funds, I am not be able to get teaching assistant and tuition scholarship in this time, however, I will be reconsidered if funding available due to declination.

    What should I do?

Congrats! Sounds like you might have a shot, might be worth shooting them an email?

Will this be okay to send right away? I am thinking of sending of my scholarship reconsideration to DGS in mid-February or March, since declination would likely to come. And I don’t know how to ask DGS for what in my email. Any advice?

buffalo is one of the two flagships under SUNY, and (unlike CUNY) haven't had any funding problems thus far. you definitely will be considered for a fully-funded scholarship, though the offer letter might take some time! congrats!

    Many thanks!

  7. Claiming SUNY at Buffalo! Email notification came to check the portal. However, scholarship did not been awarded, even though I am thrilled to be accepted! I am looking for a chance that other people who decline the offer with the scholarship and get, since it is still early season for looking admissions decisions.

Will I get a chance to be funded?

Thank you so much. Yes, I was surprised too. I submitted my application on 15 Dec, and it took them only two weeks to send out interview invitations.

I wouldn't be too worried if I were you. Interview invitation itself does not provide any good information. There are too many reasons that a school does or does not interview a candidate. It could be that they have doubts regarding an applicant, so they want to meet him/her (I know this is especially true for international students (e.g. Chinese) whose English proficiency might be a concern). Or it could be that they are genuinely interested in a certain candidate and trying to decide to pull the trigger or not. Sometimes, a department chooses not to interview someone because the application materials are sufficient for it to know he/she is the right person. So, I wouldn't read too much into it, as I said.

To answer your question, I was interviewed by the designated IR faculty in the admission committee of this year rotation (whom I did not mention in the SOP).

Oh I see. Since this is my second application, I am quite desperate. Moreover, I did not mention any faculties in SOP in purpose. Some schools, which directly insist to name faculties, I did, but others, I did not. I hope we all get good results.

I wonder did WashU announced their all candidates, or just AP/MDs.

  9. Oh my, WashU is already announcing?

What I see now, is that all accepted claims are AP and Methodologies. I myself also applied for WashU as IR, can I still think I have a shot for WashU or just give up?

I am also get frustrated since schools are already announcing or offering an interviews.

Hello everyone! Northwestern has had a final list of admitted students at least since the beginning of February. Due to financial constraints, this year's cohort will be considerably smaller than usual. Depending on final budget allocations, the Department might admit one or a few more students, but that might not happen. I hope this information helps!

It is really credible information? I am starting to get panic. When will they announce about rejection/wait-list/acceptance?

  11. Can I here something good this week? Nothing has been come out for me. Only rejection mails.

    I am getting desparate.

Rejection: Wisconsin-Madision, WashU, Boston, Virginia, Emory, Berkeley, Delaware, Maryland-College Park, Notre Dame

Pending: Northwestern, Georgetown, Cornell, Princeton, Minnesota, Duke, Connecticut, UPenn

I think many of your schools don't do interviews. Several haven't released results yet - I think we'll hear from Princeton and Berkeley next week while Penn will likely come closer to Feb 28. I'm not familiar with the others, but it seems that you have a fairly wide range, so there's reason to think that one could work out.

I guess I still have a hope for being admitted, really hope so. I guess I have to wait for a longer. IT would be sad if I do not make it to Northwestern, since it's my dreamschool.

  13. 3 minutes ago, TerribleTowel said:

Northwestern admits in waves, with the last wave likely occurring a few weeks from now. It's not clear how they do it - could be by subfield or some other criteria. So there's still hope! Where else are you applying?

If it makes you feel any better, I know people in other fields who were rejected everywhere they applied but then were successful applying the following year. So even in the absolute worst case scenario that you get rejected everywhere, you can always work to add to your record and try again. It is stressful, but you can succeed eventually no matter what happens this cycle.

Thanks for cheering me up! I got Northwestern, Georgetown, Berkeley, Cornell, Minnesota, Princeton, Maryland, UPenn,  Connecticut, Boston, Duke left. I haven't heard any of these schools yet, not even for an interview. Do I still have a chance to be accepted without any interviews?

I do not want to think the worst scenario now. Still, thanks for your consideration.

  14. I'm really getting nervous. I have applied 17 schools, currently 6 rejected. Still, I have not heard anything from these left 11 schools, including Northwestern, Georgetown, Cornell, Minnesota, etc. Assuming that Georgetown is having an interview for shortlisted applicants, which I also did not hear any information of. Northwestern is sending some applicants for the admission. About Cornell, nothing heard from this forum.

Do I still have a chance to be accepted? I am getting really nervous that I cannot even go to sleep well...

For those who applied for Georgetown: I got interviewed last Friday and the professor, who is a committee member, told me that they are interviewing 15-20 shortlisted applicants.

Can I ask which field you applied? Also, does Georgetown only accepts those who gets an interview? I haven’t heard anything from anywhere yet. ?
