  1. It also made me wonder whether anyone maliciously posts an update from a program that's inaccurate.

I know what you mean, and I wonder too, especially when, like Chicago anthropology, they have a stated policy that they never accept by email, never notify before 1st week of March, and sent out all the notices on the same day. The results updates have their weaknesses - maybe the email was from a potential advisor, maybe they asked directly for an answer, but we have no way of knowing that. Not to mention that it would be very easy to grief and stir up a huge amount of panic by posting false results.

...although I can't for the life of my imagine who would get a kick of of griefing poor little us.

  2. I don't know about public policy, but that's completely untrue in some social sciences. For example, none of the big anthropology programs have interviews, and they often hold people on waitlist, expecting to dip into it as some of the folks they accept first decide not to attend. For 6 of my 9 programs, there are no results posted on this page at all as of yet, and last year shows the first notifications in either direction in early March. The last acceptances were in the beginning of April.

Even my advisor has told me it is way too early to expect to have heard anything, since anthropologists as a group are painfully difficult to keep on schedule.

So, OP, it's true that it looks grim if you were expecting an interview. But if your programs don't make a policy of call for interviews, then sit down and chill out, because you may have another month to wait.

  3. I came ][ this close to applying to Berkeley, and then didn't because it wasn't a great fit. This may be crazy, but now I'm wishing I had just because several people have heard from them already... i.e. less manic waiting

I, on the other hand, did apply to Berkeley, but have still heard nothing despite all of these acceptance calls and rejection emails that are flying about. Which is perhaps a good deal more manic than normal waiting. I'm stubbornly taking that as a good sign and believing that means a second-tier yes once the genius children have made up their minds.

  4. Here's hoping that too, Tonights.

Oddly enough although I have seen big jewelry on anthropologists from other schools, it wasn't the trend at mine. UNC-CH cultural anth professors all specialize in horridly patterned shirts. Plaid, hawaiian, you name it, and the brighter the better!

  5. I am just about to go crazy or jitter myself right off my chair at work, because I've heard *nothing* from my schools except that they've got all my application bits. Usually I love how laid-back anthro faculty are (they always seem to get their classes scheduled later in the morning...all that BIG jewelry :) ) but this is ridiculous!

About the Berkeley acceptance calls, does anyone have a guess as to whether it went to all the finalists they will consider, or just the cream-of-the-crop? Should I steel myself for a rejection, or wait for round two?

And is anyone else here applying to Columbia cultural? It seems not to be a big school on this forum, maybe because of the heavy physical bias. But for me: they do East Asia AND urban anthro, so it would be a dream program for me.

Ugh, I'm just so nervous...second-guessing so many things I did. For one, I did not contact a single professor at any of the schools I'm applying for. I didn't feel like I had any questions I really needed to ask them (I got so much intel from my LOR writers), and decided to err on the side of not bugging them with fluff emails when everyone else was probably trying to get their attention and even ask serious questions. Also my undergrad adviser knows several of the professors I want to work with (and knows I want to work with them), and I figure him putting a word in with his LOR or a call or email would have much more impact than anything I could say. But now I'm worried that with funding so tight, anyone who doesn't wave their arms and scream will just be overlooked. My credentials are fine, especially the numbers, and I have what I think is a really interesting project description in my SOP, but I don't know if I will stand out enough.

Yes, I know, I hear the tiny violins too.

  6. There seem to be not so many anth folks on this forum, and our info gets all diluted out. I thought maybe a topic for our field could help us keep it together.

My main question is to anyone reading the forum who got the acceptance call from UC Berkeley this year, or is currently studying there. Is this the first-ranked acceptance, with more to follow? Or is funding so tight that if you haven't heard from them yet, it's over already.

I have heard precisely nothing from any of my schools, and while I figure that's for the better (no insta-rejections) I am about to vibrate apart just thinking about it.
