  1. Just a guy from Colorado...

  2. I'm really curious, anonymousbequest -- what exactly makes you say that? I'm quite concerned by you're statement, as I'd been seriously considering one of those "useless" MAs.
  3. Melchior and whatshewrote, Yes, I have a hunch that subject matter may indeed have had at least something to do with these results (along with many other factors). Coincidentally enough, my field was related to (non-British) historical studies, too. It's all okay -- I'm definitely not giving up on my project just because IIE said no! Best of luck to you both (and all you finalists!) Best, Roman
  4. Crash. No for me. Better luck to all of you!!
  5. How can they be sending emails out after business hours??? I am completely freaking out. CONGRATS to those who have already heard good news!! What countries are you finalists for? ETA/Research?
  6. Oh, BLAST, Albanski, I am kicking the seat of my own pants -- our posts must've crossed in midstream -- I'm so sorry! But good for you for being so controversial -- at least that means you're really pushing the boundaries of your field. Best of luck. R Was it your FPA you heard from, I'm assuming?
  7. Aw, Albanski, I'm still rooting for you -- and for all of you. Melchior, whatever happens, at least you've already got a Cambridge admit under your belt! That's pretty darned fantastic already. I'm incredibly jealous that you already know for certain! (Very happy for you, of course ) The director of the program I applied to in the UK (apologies for the deliberate vagueness -- it's not Oxbridge, though) said I was very likely to be accepted, which is in my SOP...but nothing official has come through yet. Which means, as of right now, I have --gulp --no letter of affiliation. Anyone else in this boat? Can I basically assume a rejection, do you think? IIE had said it was okay to just send along my admissions letter when it came, but it just hasn't come through in time... Man, I wish we all knew already! Hang in there, everyone R
  8. Friday?? Does that hold for at-large applicants, too? Oh, man, I almost wish I hadn't stumbled on this thread! But since I'm already here...anyone else for the UK? Best of luck to you all! Roman
  9. Ticklemepink and Eucalyptus, Thank you both so much for your responses and the much-needed perspective. I really appreciate your insight. I guess I just needed to hear it from someone else. Now, to turn my energies to more productive things than ridiculous anxiety. Thank goodness someone has a sensible head on their shoulders. (I'll try to learn...) Man, but I'd trade some of those points for the wisdom not to freak out over nonsense...ultimately, that seems to me to be worth a lot more. Thanks again for your help, and best of luck to you both. Roman
  10. Hi everyone, I've been happily lurking around this forum for ages, and swore I would never be "that guy"...but here I am, angsting away with the best of them and looking for a little perspective. I took the GREs today for the first time this morning. I'd been getting regular 790s on the verbal on Kaplan's practice tests, and about 680-710-ish on the math (after lots of prep). I'm really a more of a verbal guy (2 humanities majors with only 2 A-s in the whole four years of undergrad), and I'm planning on applying for humanities PhD programs. Finished the test feeling ok, and clicked to see my scores. Verbal: 730 Math: 740 Massive double-take. Math is higher than expected (good...) but verbal significantly lower than I'd hoped. I'm worrying that I need to re-take, since I'll be shooting for top-5 PhD programs in my field and don't want to hurt my chances. My roommate says that I should leave it well enough alone, and that I'm being an idiot (and I'm afraid he may be right). Of course, I won't know about the AW for a couple of weeks yet. Still, I could use your perspective... Retake or not? How respectable is a V730 for top-5s in the humanitites, especially U.S. History? How about the Q740? How much does any of this stuff really matter for admissions? Are V750 cut-offs at all common? Thank you! I'd really appreciate your thoughts... I need a realitiy check. Too many GRE math problems have addled my poor old brain. Roman
