He said he didn’t know where those 2013 numbers came from (before he was director), but it is indeed 4 people per subject. The way he talks about the waitlist makes me think it is ranked. I’m “very high on the waitlist” myself, apparently. Not sure what that adjective really means. I guess they don’t want to say how large the waitlist is because it would signify how many accepted students usually accept their spots at the school.
-
I also got on the waitlist for UofSC! I’m honestly thrilled. It’s in the top half of my preferred programs, and a much needed ego boost after 3 straight rejections. (Now 3r/1w/4p). I emailed back asking about how many acceptances they sent and some other info because it was honestly confusing. One part said in 2013 they took 18% of 170 apps (30!) total, and another said that they take 4 each in poetry and fiction. Hopefully they let us know how big the waitlist is and if it’s ranked. (And, selfishly, if you already have a preferred acceptance, consider taking yourself off the waitlist :p)

I wish! Silence here. These programs are switching up their usual patterns on us. I am optimistic about getting more results this week though. February is wrapping up, and before Arizona I hadn’t heard a peep in 12 days, so I’ve got fingers crossed for a batch of notifs this week.

Joining the chorus of rejection. I’m not going to lie, it’s hitting harder each time. Third straight rejection out of eight applied and I’m losing hope. It’s hard because there’s really no gauge for how close or far I was. My professors and peers like my work, so I know it’s not terrible, but still no sign on if I’m losing the first pass or just barely not on the waitlist. Ugh. Hoping for more news this week. Ideally better news, but I’d be happy to just get it over with even.
-
Now I am too! I actually forgot I haven’t heard from South Carolina either… so that’s now /four/ of my remaining six applications that seem imminent ??
-
Over a week of silence had left me almost calm, but now I’m back to freaking out a little. Anticipating BU and Arizona any time now based on you guys. Thanks for the updates!
-
How did Arizona notify? I’ve been waiting for more news (fiction on most apps, fiction + poetry where I could do both). Now I’m paranoid ?
-
Nothing from Brown. If you hear good news from them, ask if they can transfer it to yours truly :p I wasn't able to afford it for undergrad so it's basically an immediate commitment from me if they take me.
-
I’m curious: For those of you who are applying again or some time after college, who did you get your recommendations from? It’s my first time applying for MFAs and I asked my favorite professors, but I feel like it’d get awkward asking after years pass, or after several failed attempts. I don’t currently plan to reapply if I don’t get in (sign from the universe or whatnot) but if I change my mind down the line it’d be helpful to know!

The wait has been killing me. It’s honestly become my top or second top school. I hope I at least get an interview ??️

I’m currently suffering in this radio silence. I wish one of my first two had been an acceptance because I feel like I’m just staring down the barrel of 6 more rejections and I want it over ASAP. No idea what to make of USC’s silence to me and nothing from anyone else. Commiserating with you all ?but congrats to admits!! Hopefully I’ll get to join that group eventually ?
-
I’m sure it’d be fine. People in previous years have just gotten a call asking to call back, or just letting you know you’re in via voicemail.
-
Just the acceptance someone mentioned.
-
Just got another rejection from Northwestern. You know, in case I didn’t get the message the first time. Ah, onwards. Hoping South Carolina will notify me soon since someone’s already heard from them.
-
To be honest, I’m not sure how important the recommendations are, other than that you have people willing to give them. Probably the school can complete most of its review process without having them in, and then use the recs to sort out the top contenders. So you could still hear at the normal time. It’s really up to so many factors we’ll never be privy to.
-
I tried to find info from past years but couldn’t. How wide is the spread of acceptances? Or am I really only hoping for a waitlist by now?
-
Congrats to the UC Irvine admits! I've got Brown, Arizona, Virginia, Michigan, South Carolina, and Boston left (fingers crossed on one of them!). Aside Michigan, it looks like the schools tend to notify in March so I might be in for a dry spell. Not looking forward to that again. What's everyone else looking forward to? Wishing everyone the best of luck!

Right there with you. I have to say, seeing "The Morning: State of Uncertainty" roll into my inbox from the NYT today was a hilarious touch on my email's part as I wait for results. EDIT: literally minutes after NYT, I finally received my form rejection from Litowitz.
-
Hopefully I get a response promptly tomorrow because I'm not too hot on the idea of emailing them to remind them to send me a rejection. I think I've earned sweet dreams at least, so I'll just pretend I'm waitlisted for now... or they decided the writers and haven't told them themselves yet ?.
-
I also applied for Northwestern in Fiction, and my inbox has been silent as a stone. Even checked my spam. No update on apply web either. I wonder why ?? Trying not to get my hopes up and guessing there might be multiple rounds to the rejections sent out. Haven't seen any fiction acceptances (though I'm not on Draft), but it's not really standard to send rejections out first, is it?
-
I'm also moderately worried about Virginia. I thought they were trying to interview most people this year but I haven't heard a thing.
-
I see that some schools are calling their accepted applicants. Is there a list anywhere of which schools tend to notify a certain way? I figure if a school is sending acceptances out via the portal, I want to keep checking, but if it's going to call, I might as well save myself the strife because I'd be the first to know acceptances went out if I got one.
-
So with this and the Northwestern one that went out, are those schools good as done giving acceptances? If so, that's two more from my list ?

I thought about trying for PhD creative writing programs but I figure it's hard enough to get into the MFAs! If I end up going to an MFA program, I'll consider applying to a PhD then. Could extend teaching opportunities for example. I've applied to eight places and so far only heard back from Alabama (rejected ). I've got the support from people at my undergrad institution with wikipedia pages who've read my writing, but it just seems like luck of the draw when so few spots are available. Best of luck to everyone and hoping for good (or at least more) news soon.
