  1. just another encouraging tidbit: (learned in an economic history course...yes, im a nerd. but then, isnt that why we're all here?) after a recession, federal and state gov'ts tend to pump money into educational institutions pretty much first and foremost. this will not only increase funds across depts, and possibly lead to new tenure track positions, as well as give senior tenured professors the confidence to retire. so in about 4-5 years, the market for comm phds should be much, much rosier than it is right now.

Boy, I hope that's true, but I can't help but be pessimistic, considering the pathetic anti-intellectual movement running rampant in the U.S., including amongst our political "leaders." dry.gif

  2. Still in limbo here. Somebody posted a waitlist result for Minnesota's Comm Studies program (which is the one I've been short stacked at), but I emailed the grad coordinator and was told there was no update for me yet, but that they do, in fact, keep a waitlist. I guess that's good though? Maybe media acceptances haven't been decided completely yet. Anyway, I'll just hang out in my personal purgatory over here until the bitter end. cool.gif

  3. Just got a "No" from LSU. Man this is depressing!

Sorry, and I hear you. sad.gif My only legitimate chance (unless Washington's English department throws me a curveball acceptance) is the place where I've made it into the small stack of 20. After speaking to a POI on Friday though, I know they're only taking 3 of the dozen or so media applicants (which includes me). Regardless, I might be in for quite a wait before I know something concrete, because they hold onto that stack of 20 until the very end as an unofficial waitlist.

  4. I received three emails. An offer letter and fellowship letter and an email from a professor of interest.

They all featured my name prominently. The first two might have been form letters, might not have been. The last was definitely a personal letter by a prospective adviser.

    Good luck!

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info and congrats again!

  5. I am claiming one USC acceptance. Got an email at 4:45pm est followed by a personal letter.

Thanks for letting us know, and congratulations! If you don't mind, was the email individually sent? Or was it a mass email? And, what do you mean by a personal letter? Sorry, it's my first choice, so I'm freaking out a bit here...

  6. Keep the faith maximalist! you never know in what crazy ways admissions committees work. good luck!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I bit the bullet and emailed UNC. It's a no-go. For the rest of you folks still waiting though, notifications will apparently be sent from the Graduate School over the next three to four weeks.

Damn, at this point, I'll be stoked to get in ANYWHERE. sad.gif

  7. Just got an email from the grad coordinator for UNC Comm Studies informing me I've been waitlisted. Apparently they're having problems with the online system, getting notification of admit status to students, but I assume they're contacting anyone else that's admitted or wait listed directly. That's all the news from here!

Maximalist--sorry about Brown's MCM. That's a tough program. I applied to the American Civilization program with intention of working with MCM as well--still no word from Am Civ, but my hopes aren't very high.

Thanks for the condolences! And, congrats on the UNC waitlist! Out of curiosity, was the email directly to you? Or was it a mass email? (I'm hoping they're maybe working their way down the alphabet or something with emails, if they're going out individually...).

  8. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH panic! :o

(I'm not allowed to post what's just happened... I will when all is over...)

Is that good or bad panic? Hopefully, it's good!

Also, it looks like Brown's Modern Culture and Media program called their 4 admits yesterday. I think there was somebody else frequenting the Comm area who applied there too. Oh well though, it was a long shot for me anyway.

  9. I made it into the short stack for one of my programs! Over 150 apps and I made it into the final 20! Man, even though that's not an acceptance, it feels pretty good after 2 rejections in early February being my only news so far. biggrin.gif

Just to clarify, this is a program which no one else on the board has applied to (I don't think, at least), and my app is still in the running.

    And thanks, jmac!

  10. No prob -- I don't know about anyone else. I assume others have gotten acceptances, but don't personally know anyone else that has applied this year. I actually just opened the physical letter today and that's just for the Provost fellowship, not the actual acceptance. So the actual acceptance letter I only have in email form. It does include info about a visiting weekend for accepted students that will be happening the second week of March, though. Their department is going to start coordinating travel with students at some point next week. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info, and congrats on your acceptance and fellowship!

There are a few of us here who applied to USC, and most of us haven't heard from the department at all. The only contact I've had was to sort out a missing LOR. Hopefully, the visiting weekend being scheduled for mid-March means we'll all be hearing soon, though!

  11. Do they really? I wonder why...

Oh goodness, yes. The humanities don't "produce" or bring in grants/money, according to many lovely critics, and therefore, they have no place in a university setting. Of course, these people forget the fact that their English classes taught them how to read and write, or that humanities classes study what it is and what it means to be human, or myriad other reasons why a balance between humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences are necessary for a fruitful society.

A recent conversation with my sister highlighted the sorts of attitudes humanities folks are up against. We were discussing a paper she was writing about the Clash and consumerism for a course (a measly 4 page paper, I might add), when out of the blue, she goes, "I'm just not used to bullshitting this much...you know, being in the sciences and all." To which I replied, "Well, maybe if you actually had something to say on the topic, it wouldn't be bullshitting, would it?"

Put simply, there is a perception here in the U.S. that humanities=easy and are made of bullshitting.

  12. I've just received a letter from the director of the doctoral program at Temple which basically said that I will have funding!!! In the best case scenario it will be a four-year fellowship. The department have nominated me and are now waiting for results. In the worst case scenario, which is not bad at all, I will have a three-year teaching assistantship with the possibility of additional funding when I am working on my dissertation!!

    Strangefox happy :P

Congrats, Strangefox!!! I bet that takes quite a load off of your shoulders! cool.gif

  13. I wonder why people would want to do that, I mean post a fake like that...

I haven't the slightest idea...maybe application season stress is getting to some people in mysterious ways? dry.gif

excellent recon sir/madam!! In light of this information I retract the above pessimistic statement. Though I just got accepted to SUNY Stony Brook's Cultural Studies program, so UNC is now less crucial for me. I mean I'm still really excited about the program, but I'm not sure if it's as good a fit as SBU. Though UNC may more generous with funding... So we shall see.

Strangefox--sorry to hear of your rejection from Penn, but glad to hear you're upbeat about it! I felt similar about USC's AmStudies program (which I was rejected from).

Thanks! And, for future reference, it's madam. smile.gif Congrats on your SUNY acceptance!!

  14. To the UNC folks: I've been creeping on the results board, looking at UNC's overall method of notifications across various departments, and it seems as if they've moved to email across the board this year. If you look at all the notifications--acceptance or rejection--they're by email, except for the lone Communication acceptance, which makes me think it's likely a fake.

  15. Oh my god, there is already an acceptance for UNC-CH for PhD. I still haven't heard anything.

Last week there were two results (rejections, though) from Mizzou - not a word to me.

    I'm going crazy, really!

Why does everyone else seem to be notified but me?

Since that acceptance was by postal mail, it's possible the decisions are all in the mail. The timeline would match up with decisions in past years. I've been checking my status regularly on MyUNC, and there's been no change there. Regardless, I'm on pins and needles now!

I'm in the same boat...some rejections went out for Minnesota's Comm Studies last week, and I didn't get one, but no acceptance or waitlist notification either. Just no word at all. It's such a trying experience!

  16. A similar thing seems to have happened with the American Studies program--they accepted one person, like 2 weeks ago (or one person who posted on the results page). Several people doubted it, but others said that they thought it could be legit because apparently USC (or the ASE program at least) has a history of notifiying somewhat sporadically. Not sure if same applies to Annenberg, but it seems like it could be the case.

But a fellowship nomination is not an admissions offer... Maybe they do those first?? I would say that USC folks shouldn't lose hope yet!

Historically, that hasn't happened with Annenberg or hasn't this early (the earliest posts from years past are from the last week in February), but things could always have changed. There's also somebody on the results board who's called bullshit on the fellowship post, due to the fact that the deadline has been extended until today. Who knows. At least with Annenberg, you're fully funded no matter what, so any old spot will do for me—fellowship or not.

  17. I'm an undergrad at the U now, so feel free to hit me up with any questions.

Yes, the public transportation is quite good, and it will only get better once the new lightrail line from downtown Minneapolis running through campus to downtown St. Paul is finished. I bike year-round, even during these past few -25+F mornings, but when necessary, the lightrail runs near my house, which is a few miles from campus. If you're living nearer to campus though, there's tons of express and regular bus options that will get you there in 15 or so minutes, depending on the neighborhood, of course.
