  1. It's tricky in a way that you are applying to a creative writing program. But in my experience of working with about 3 tutors who helped me to write my SOP, I would say no. It was more about 30% why I am qualified and history, and 70% of what I'm interested in and going to do in my program. I love creativity in writing, so it was sad to see my hook go. And SOP has word limit, so fitting in everything will be hard so i will just go straight into the dry stuff. If you do decide to use it, I would keep it very short.
  2. I took research communication course and produced a research paper that I am sending it as a writing sample. And my writing sample contains literature review section. So I believe that although lit review is part of a writing sample, you should send whole research paper.
  3. Hi guys, My application requires résumé or curriculum vitae, do I need to include all my previous experiences or just things that relates to my program concentration? For example, I am applying to media and Masters cinema studies but I worked a year as a teacher's assistant at early childhood center. my ultimate goal is to be a professor, so it kind of relates? But I am not going for education program, so it's not necessary? Also, do I print my resume in nice resume paper when I send it? Is resume to grad school different from the resume you would send to a job? Thanks!!!
  4. man, finally.... a thread for media communication people! i have been looking for you people!!! did anyone applied or heard any info about DePaul University's Media and Cinema Studies program in Chicago?
  5. You do make good points. I didn't know writing SoP is this hard... I feel like I'm in grad school already... I definitely need put more efforts for sure...
  6. Hey fuzzylogician, can I ask you one more question? Do you think this first paragraph serves the purpose better? " Recently, The Social Network movie has been dominating box office and receiving an Oscar buzz. Who would have thought that program created by a college student could create a global phenomenon? Because anyone from anywhere can actively participate in social media technologies, how do social media technologies help people to understand different cultures? What might be a motivation for a person from Germany to use the Facebook compare to American users? Also, how are different ages using the social media technologies to their benefits? Do social media technologies play multi functions other than to just connect with other people? What is next media technology that will create a global phenomenon? I hope to discover these answers to the questions during my graduate program at DePaul University. "
  7. Thank you for your advise! I already wrote all my statement of purpose but I don't want to bore you guys with all my paragraphs so I only posted my first paragraph. The 1/3 of the SOP talks about my list of research interests and why I chose this school. I definitely am worrying about how I can make my SOP distinguished from other applicants. I do understand what you are saying, and I am torn between if I should be all serious or can I use some creativity? I know I want to ultimately earn Ph.D. to become professor to teach, but would that be too selfish to put in there? Or is that a reasonable goal? I don't want to sound like I'm just gonna use my Masters as a stepping stone to be a professor. thanks!
  8. I have question on your second part, you said you wrote no "fluff" materials. I'm applying to masters media communication graduate program, but I feel like I should distinguish myself from others by having that "hook" and discussing my unique background. I also have low gpa so i need to justify in a brief sentence. is that all right? 1/3 of my SOP talks about why this grad school is right for me and my future research topics. What do you think?
  9. Thank you! I totally agree that beginning is the hardest part. I also agreed on "ever since" phrase, I felt like I used it a lot before. i'm definitely changing the first sentence!
  10. Hi guys, thank you for your feedback first... I am applying for media communication program and my GPA is not that great so I need to write a good SOP. I know that the first paragraph of SOP has to stand out and have that "hook". I was wondering if this would be good? I felt it was bit boring and needed creativity but you judge. " Ever since when I came to America when I was 10 years old, my computer and television became my best friends. Both of my parents started to work full time at the laundry cleaner right away, and I was left at my aunt’s house to face the unknown challenges at the American elementary school. Being the first Asian student in the class has attracted many attentions, but my inabilities to speak English language and my lack of knowledge in American culture have made a barrier for me to make new friends. However, by looking up English phrases in Internet and watching children shows like “Arthur” in television, I was able to smash the barrier and connect with America. The media technology has expanded my intellectual horizon, and that is where my passion for communication field has started. " and then i talked about my university, why i chose this grad school, my future research questions
  11. Hi guys, I really appreciate your feedbacks. I have BA in Communication major and I am apply to DePaul University Media and Cinema communications program to earn my Masters and then hopefully Ph.D. I but heard that DePaul is not THAT hard to get into. Okay, so I'm trying to apply for spring semester, and they require 3.0 GPA, 2 rec letters, GRE optional, writing sample, and statement of purpose. I have little dilemma here. My overall GPA is 2.83 but my major GPA is 3.2. The reason for my overall GPA being low is that I was originally biology major because my parents really wanted me to be a doctor, but I just had no passion. So I forced myself to take upper science courses that resulted my GPA to be down so low. However, I decided to major in communication later and did pretty well in communication classes. I'm afraid that the admission will not even look at my application because of my low GPA. I'm planning to send 3 letters of rec from my communication professors and taking GRE next week to see if I can strengthened the application. Should I mention in statement of purpose on why my GPA is low? And do I have a chance to get into the program? * Oh I also did an internship in my senior last semester as a Social Media/Research coordinator for non-profit organization, does this help? Thanks all!
