  1. Yeah, I plan on just wanting to teach at a lesser known schools. Looks like getting a job as a history professor is pretty bleak huh? Couple of more questions, heh. What constitutes as publishing? Do you have to publish books or can you publish just journal articles (and how long do they have to be?)? Also, does giving lectures count as publishing?
  2. Hi guys (and gals), I don't know if this is the place to write this, but I'll give it a shot. I am just graduating and have been seriously considering going for a PhD in history. However, I am worried about getting a job as a history professor. I'm just wondering about the prospects of getting a job (tenured) in my state. Are the rumors really true that is extremely difficult to get a job as a tenured professor? Will i have trouble getting a job, nevertheless in my state (leaving my family and friends scares the hell out of me and this is something I really am not willing to do)? I mean i have heard of PhD's driving cabs, but I really don't believe it. Also, I have a question about the nature of being a professor. I am really interested in teaching students, more than publishing. Is publishing required for every tenured professor? Even at the so called "teaching colleges?" Also, how hard would it be to get a job at one of these "teaching colleges?" Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  3. Hi All, I have decided (finally) that I want to persue a PhD in modern european history. However, I have a bachelors in that includes a double major in english and education as well as a minor in psychology and history. I was just wondering, is it absolutely neccessary to have a bachelors in the subject area that you want to teach in? I really want to go into a bachelors---> phd program. Can I take this course or is there no shot that I will get in? (My GPA is a 3.7 if that helps any)
  4. Hey Everyone, I have just graduated with a b.s in English with a minor in history and psychology. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be applying to American Studies PhD programs in the fall. Now, I know that American Studies is a combination of a number disciplines and, depending on your speciality, one can get a teaching position teaching their main focus. I want to focus on American drama (speciifically American playwrights during WWII (possible dissertation topic)). My question is (given I complete the PhD): will I ever be able to teach history classes with my degree (I have a heavy interest in American Revolutionary/Constitutional history and 20th century American history and would even be interested in doing research in these fields)? I want to limit my English classes to twentieth century American drama and lit (specifically American drama, the American novel, and Sothern American lit) and I would like the rest to be history/political science. So, if all goes according to plan, would I be able to teach history as well as English classes with this degree? Or am I only wishfully thinking??
  5. Hey everyone, I was just wondering if a soon to be high school social studies teacher would be able to get a job at a local community college or regular university teaching intro to history (particularly U.S.). I will have a Masters of Arts in Teaching so a lot of my courses are in education, but will have taken some graduate level history courses. Thanks guys!
  6. great thank you so much guys! You guys were saying why not just apply to MA programs in English? This is basically because the social studies degree is my "backup plan" If i can't teach college English, I'd want to teach social studies. Also, "eventually" means right after i finish my masters degree. After this, I'd like to apply to PhD programs. Lastly, my undergrad english ed program is a 5 year program because you have to double major in english (get a bachelors in english lit) and then get a degree in education, so my background should be adequate enough. I'm banking on my SOP because I know exactly what I want to focus on: 20th century american dramatic literature (dissertation focus would probably be on the cold war's political influence on the works of Tennessee williams) and I'd also like to focus on 20th century political fiction, world war II lit, 19th century drama, and literature of Steinbeck (these, i know are secondary focuses but I believe I have a clear and concise view of what i want to study). Soooo hopefully the social studies will help in my case. Any other thoughts and comments?
  7. I forgot to mention that I will be graduating with Two major (english and education) and two minors (as previously stated) and my GPA will be a 3.7 (this is just undergrad)
  8. Hey everyone, So I have a plan of study that I would like to complete but I don't know if it will work, so I'm relying on you guys to help me out. Here it goes. As of December 19th, I will be graduating with my bachelors in English Education (along with a minor in History and minor in Psychology). My long-term goal is to get a PhD in English (20th century American drama to be exact). However, I know that most PhD programs require a foreign language exam and a comprehensive examination, and well, I'm not the best test taker in the world. Now, my student teaching experience has brought me to the realization that being a high school english teacher is not the same thing as being an english professor. You can't teach a work of literature as deep as i hoped, and you have to teach vocab and teach to standardized tests. Therefore I am applying to a masters program (which will start in the fall) for a degree in social studies education (basically because social studies would be a lot more fun to teach at the secondary level). This is sort of a "back up plan." However, i would eventually like to go for my PhD in in English. My question is simply can I get into a PhD program with a masters in social studies education? to get a better overview, this is how it will turn out. bachelors in english ed-->masters in social studies ed--> PhD in english. Is this whole plan plausible or will programs deny me because my advanced degree will be in social studies education? Thanks guys!
