Would anyone be interested in reading my SOP draft? Its in Q & A Format. SO its easier to read and spot errors. I have PMed to many who volunteered but I guess they are too busy at the moment because i have not received any comments yet. If anyone else is interested I will be very grateful

hmm that seems like a good option. But still, I strongly feel they are trying to judge our abilities with C and C++ which the transcripts should do. As a CS student I've had to marry it all my UG life. Of course the projects done is quite less given the fact that acads are so hectic that there is nearly 0 time to do anything other than acads. So I wonder how to make myself look good! As a matter of fact my SOP has become my major concern. I ve done 3 drafts till now. I get only negative critics every time. It has been so demoralizing that I don't even feel like pulling myself up to the chair to write something new.

can u demonstrate it by saying that some particular semester of the course got you interested and subsequent semesters kept you hooked? Or should we take a stand like this topic is so relevant to current living and hence it is very practical course? which one suits better? what are the other ways you can see these questions and answer them?

I am posting a few questions here that will have to be answered when one considers writing an SOP. I feel if we can draft nice answers for these questions the SOP process will become a lot more easier. Now if some of you can chip in providing a direction which these questions must take the entire freshers group will benefit a lot. 1) Why the University? -- what exactly should we write? can we write about the fact that the university is acclaimed, is cheap etc? 2) Why that branch? -- should we explain this by only providing our past experiences with the topic like projects seminars etc? or may be we could talk about authors of books who inspired us? 3) what are future goals and ambitions? -- should i be earnest and say attending this univ seals my job opportunities or should i be modest and say I want to expand my knowledge borders? 4) Which prof would we want to work with? -- may be I could say his work interests me? Can i be specific to say which particular publication or project and even go a step further to say I want to be a part of the project group. 5) Why should the university consider us for the candidature?-- should i say how i am intellectually and morally upright or may be i should say my grades are awesome till date? or may be i just say I have passion so consider me?

No one is interested :( I would appreciate any little help! Because I really have to send my applications over the weekend or so. Before that I would like to get the 2nd draft re-evaluated. I would really like some help even if the person is not of my branch and interests.

Hey some universities give us a limit of 500 words for SOP (Which according to me is really less) however I would like to know how strict are they about these word limits. Would it be OK if i sent them a SOP of 750 words or something despite their word limit?

hey you could like the other said, keep it vague by saying due to "medical conditions" and then use it in your favor by adding "despite your health problems you managed to obtain very good grades " That will probably paint a strong picture of your character

I have written an SOP which is actually a general template which I will use as backbone to design the Univ specific SOPs. Would anyone like to evaluate?

Ya the algorithms are the well known must know algorithms for CS students.(Eg: distance vector, DFS BFS search, travelling salesman problem etc) So i would have been programming these using C or C++. You think its worth a mention? because its just an implementation and not my own creative design?

One of the univ that I am applying asks for my experience in programming C and C++ (it asks for projects). I think this question is asked so that I can demonstrate that I am proficient with these languages. But it mentions "write about the projects you have done" I have done a mini project using C++. Other than that, my entire BE course has numerous laboratory sessions where in I have programmed various algorithms using C and C++ My question is can I mention this? (the labs) which are not exactly projects (but part of curriculum). Or should I just emphasise on the project I have done?

Oh. OK. Anyways I have a single line telling them that I have not just confined to my books all the time but have been a part of extra curricular. Have mentioned that I was chief editor of college magazine do demonstrate my leadership skills Hope that will add some positiveness.. But now I am really getting the direction to rewrite my SOP. One more thing is, can I use the stuff written on the college website to justify why exactly a particular univ. They would have listed our univ aims at blah blah blah. So can i use this info and support my statement of purpose by explaining how it compliments my goals? Because I heard, using those sentences from the college site might be termed upon as copy-paste. But anyway would like to know more about it. By the way, the CMU site mentions that for its INI program(the one i am aiming) does not need any work experience before hand. So may be my chances a teeny bit higher? Can anyone just give a little insight about this program?

Actually I'm looking forward to do my Masters first, I am not very sure if I want to do PhD. So I would keep my goal as MS as of now. And ya I would like to know what is the kind of essay is likely to be impressive. Would it be an essay where I explain my academics or Would it be something which demonstrates my over all personality as a good person. How much would an extra curricular activity matter? Is it worth a mention? i will be doing 2 projects in next semester.. will that add on? What is the kind of profile one has to reflect in the SOP so that a positive feeling can be created? Similarly when would one call a recommendation letter strong?

I would also like to add that I am very active in extra curricular activities. Have been editor of my college magazine and am part of organizing technical fest. ( Am not sure if these are of any importance at all)
