  1. Yeah, one of my interviewers didn't really say much and there were only two, when 3 were listed on the zoom invite so it kind of threw me off. They also asked a question that sounded more like something you'd hear in a job interview about "challenges I've overcome" but it was so broad it really stumped me for a moment. I think I sounded passionate about my work though, so hopefully that plays out in my favor!
  2. Just had my SMFA interview. It went okay, I think... hard to know what I might have been able to do better. also got a rejection from Tyler printmaking this morning, which I expected.
  3. Totally. I accidentally uploaded the same artwork twice πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ but I still met the minimum number of pieces so it's not like I under-submitted. I emailed admissions immediately when I noticed and they just said "That is fine." lol so, hopefully it's not a huge deal.
  4. Lol you guys have me checking my site analytics now... and losing hope in hearing back from RISD 😞 I realized I made a small mistake in my portfolio and I hope it didn't cause them to pass on my application entirely. I feel really good about applying to CCA however! I did some last-minute research while writing my statement and they have a faculty member I'd love to work with. As much as I'm interested in the idea of moving across the country and having a whole new experience for my MFA, it would be pretty nice to be able to stay where I'm at. Fingers crossed for more invites next week!
  5. Well, I got a last minute fee waiver to CCA, so I guess I'm writing some new essays tonight! Not sure if anyone here applied to UNM, but they should be contacting applicants next week. I got my BFA there and highly recommend their program (photo and printmaking, at least!)
  6. No updates from me yet 😞 I have my SMFA interview on on Monday. Pretty sure I'll be rejected from Tyler since it seems like they sent all their invites in mid-January. I'm still holding out for RISD Printmaking but it sounds like all the other departments have contacted finalists already... For other people applying to VCU, based on last year's thread, they sent out invites between Feb 8-16. Hoping we all get some invites next week! Anyone else here apply to SUNY Purchase? I wonder when they will start sending theirs out since their application closes on Saturday. I'm having a lot of ~hindsight is 20/20~ feelings in terms of what schools I chose to apply to, and that I should have been a little more specific in my statements about each program. Also I'm wondering if I should have looked into more interdisciplinary programs due to the nature of my work. It's tough considering once you're admitted you can work with any medium you like!
  7. I did not get a fee waiver! None of the schools I applied to offered them πŸ™„
  8. Rad! It's probably my top choice other than RISD, so I'm really hoping I hear back. I attended the virtual info session for painting+printmaking and it was only myself and one other person so I hope that means it's not too competitive this year lol. I've never been to RVA but it seems like a great town. My first thought too when I read the news this morning lol... but congratulations on your acceptance!! That rules! Federal funding may or may not affect your situation, depending whether your institution gets federal funding? for example I wonder if federal Pell grants thru FAFSA will be affected--but that doesn't apply to us going into graduate programs anyway. I'd probably just contact the school.
  9. RISD, Yale, SMFA, Tyler, VCU and SUNY Purchase! I've only heard back from SMFA so far. My portfolio is mostly collage and mixed media but hoping to get more into the print realm within a program.
  10. Is there anyone else on here who applied to printmaking? Even in previous years' threads there seem to be few of us! Congrats on all the interviews so far 😊
  11. Yay! It does feel fast. Based on previous threads hopefully we see some more come through in the next couple of weeks! I know I'll probably be waiting a bit for SUNY because their apps aren't even due until 2/1.
  12. SUNY Purchase's website says they review portfolios starting February 1st, with decision rollout beginning March 15.
  13. I just got an interview with SMFA 😱
  14. Crossing my fingers you get good news! I actually ended up not sending in my SVA app πŸ˜ͺ I was so burnt out by the time I did the other 6, I probably should've, but oh well. thank you though!
  15. I had a dream that I got an interview request from Tyler 😩
  16. Definitely had a minor meltdown once I submitted all my apps lol, but I'm trying not to think too much about the work I submitted until I (hopefully) get interviews. I'm just spending as much time in the studio as I can without putting too much pressure on myself to make anything. and making Valentine's Day prints for friends so I have something else to focus on!
  17. I did! and will definitely post any updates ☺️ Looks like last year they started sending interview requests around January 18th through the end of the month...!
  18. glad more people are starting to post because I'm extremely curious as to where others are applying! Most of what I make is collage and mixed media. I work around themes of autonomy, control, and power, and how we exist/relate to/cope with those ideas under late capitalism. I applied to printmaking programs as I'd like to expand in that direction and it's sort of the closest discipline in terms of what I do.
  19. Yes! I liked her a lot and was really appreciative to get a one-on-one review. I'm surprised how few posts are in here as well. Hope we see some other people log on soon!
  20. Completed my applications over the weekend, whew! Now waiting, and I suppose preparing for interviews (fingers crossed)?!? My final list, all printmaking or visual arts: RISD VCU Tyler Yale SMFA SUNY Purchase
  21. Yale has recorded versions of their virtual information sessions and I found them helpful. They are on their Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDwJT0mYodTSodcpH-hGmdA I know these programs are extremely competitive, but hearing what the faculty and current cohort had to say actually put me at ease in terms of feeling like this is the right time for me to apply. Good luck!
  22. I had a portfolio review with SMFA Tufts today and it was incredibly helpful! The admissions director gave me some things to think about as I finalize my portfolio and gave me reassurance that this is the right time to pursue an MFA, so, fingers crossed 😬 My final list of schools, all printmaking or interdisciplinary: RISD VCU Tyler Yale SMFA Tufts SUNY Purchase SVA because I got an application waiver
  23. Great to hear! I have a few friends in Philly and though I've only been there for half a day 10 years ago, people tell me I'd like it there πŸ™‚ a good DIY/music scene is important to me. I've spent very little time on the east coast in general but tbh I'm not really interested in living anywhere out west outside of San Francisco, so I'm going for it in terms of a big move. Also thinking of adding SUNY Purchase to my list, their printmaking program seems strong! Are you looking at painting for all of your schools? I would apply to Northwestern however I'm not sure I could hack the Chicago winters. Location has definitely been my #1 factor in terms of choosing programs.
  24. Does anyone have advice/input on applying to different departments at the same school? My practice falls between mediums and I'm worrying a bit about picking the "wrong" department lol. I'd consider some of my work to be printmaking-adjacent and I'd love to explore that direction more thoroughly with future work, but I don't necessarily possess the technical knowledge in that arena (or how much does that matter overall?). Also took a look at RISD Illustration and noticed that 1) their examples of student work are across all mediums, which I liked, but 2) their faculty seems very commercially-oriented in terms of their careers, which I am less inclined toward. I was leaning more toward photo or printmaking but the illustration department seems pretty expansive so now I have three departments to consider...
  25. Hi everybody! This will be my first year applying. I feel a little under-prepared after doing a TON of research and prep at the beginning of the year, and then life got in the way for a few months... I'm still finalizing my list of schools to apply to, but my short list at the moment is: -CCA (I live in the bay and it would be nice to stay because I love my apartment. haha) -RISD (was not on my list but I found a lecturer whose work I love is there, so might as well try despite the price tag) -VCU -Tyler I'm also on the fence about UC Davis, I may go ahead and apply there since it's also near me and I've heard really great things about it. My work is sort of in-between mediums--I make collage and do some drawing and printmaking. Excited to hear from everyone else!
