Hi there, I know this thread is a bit old, but it popped up for me and I felt like I had to share. My wife had a similar concern about staying in non-hotel accommodations. When she traveled to Missouri by herself, she opted for a hotel, and she really enjoyed it. She prefers hotels over Airbnbs for the added security and comfort. So your fear was totally justified.
