Received my rejection from Harvard DrPH. Email notification to check the portal. I feel sad, but I know it is super competitive. That program was the one I was most energized by. I thought the fit was fantastic. Alas. On the other hand, I wish the very very best to those of you who were accepted. I hope you have an outstanding experience!

    On to the next.

Been having brain fog for the last week. The same analyses id get so easily and implement I’m taking like double the time to do. I guess it’s the imposter syndrome from everything that’s making it this way

I have felt this too, ikigai. Someone wise once told me “Give yourself the patience and grace you would give a best friend.” I’m currently on my way to the spa with a book to just chill out. This process is incredibly trying on the mind, body, and soul, but you’re doing great.

I felt the same way. I have also started distracting myself with spa and self-care activities. I also started to reframe my thinking. As much as I am dying to get into a program, I think there can be other positives to focus on when you take a step back. A PhD or DrPH does not directly guarantee success post-grad. There are still more hoops to jump through. I'm not saying that it doesn't matter; I'm just saying when we demystify reality, it may be easier to let go of the power it has and anxiety. Wishing everyone luck!

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's such a small number of people they accept. So they release the ones they definitely want to make offers to, give those people time to consider and respond, then put out the next group of offers based on the acceptances. I'd guess they have a ranked list.

What I don't quite understand is why they don't just put out their rejections of people they know they won't admit first. Other programs do this. If it's just a 100% no for whatever reason, send the rejection, and put people out of their misery.

If we have to suffer, at least we suffer together.

I think they don’t have a true set process. the DrPH specifically has been changed a lot since its inception. They also like having a diverse cohort of background interest. People reviewing may have different levels of availability and it honestly comes down to the personality type of the person who reviews. They advocate and that varies.

My advisor at Columbia used to sit on admissions at times for Epi said it was brutal, they divide the top 10 to each person and they have to bring that down to one and then advocate for their chosen person and sometimes they are voted out.

I think we can try to predict their process but might not be worth our energy. I agree It would be best if they just sent pure rejections first.

Looks like someone posted a DrPH acceptance in the Results section for Harvard. Congratulations to them and to those of you who have heard good news!

Seems like it was an international student accepted so far on the results page! Congrats to all who are accepted!! I wish they would send out everything at the same time! Still waiting! Good luck to everyone!!

Try the link in another browser or clearing your cache. I moved the link from Chrome to Safari, and it resolved the glitch. I didn't want to clear my cache because I rely on it for my saved passwords. For a minute there, I really thought it meant that our letters were waiting in the wings and causing the glitch, no joke.

Thanks, good idea. I will try that! The wait is killing me lol

People who applied to Harvard and have a Harvard Key/portal account: Is anyone else's portal glitching like wild? Mine has an error message in the the Admissions Decision Letter box, and the whole page has been flickering and reloading the entire day . . .

Trying not to read into it . . .

I just checked the portal and have the same glitch in the letterbox, so odd.

Asked the same question, got this response "

"If reviewers need additional clarification, they may reach out to you to schedule an interview. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out. "

Lol I heard this verbally during a one on one with admissions before applying! It’s quite funny how many responses they have. Two students that were accepted last year told me they had two round of interviews so that admissions could see beyond their written application. I’ve finally decided not to stress about the outcomes. What is meant to be will be.

Did anyone reach out to Harvards adcom to ask about the importance of interview / if it’s mandatory or a optional thing only to clarify some applications/ if people admitted without them too?

I am confused by this, too; either their process is ambiguous, or they aren't interested in being transparent about the review process. For their DrPH, I have heard different responses from current students; admissions mentioned this: "Aside from the Kira interview, no interview is necessary for the DrPH program. The Kira interview is evaluated as part of the holistic application review and will be considered alongside all other submitted materials. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out."

It wasn't too bad - pretty friendly, questions fairly straight forward, around leadership, failure etc.

And yup, assuming that's the first round? Certainly the first one I have done!

Wishing you Good luck!! I am sure you did well!

This is my first time applying. I am still confused as to how much they weigh interviews. Admissions was ambivalent about interviews when I had asked prior to applying.

Seen a few posts about JHU admission process. Just want to shed some light into the process. Don't be discouraged. I don't know about other departments but for Epi, only those interviewed will be considered for admission and maybe even waitlisted (you will almost for sure be ranked after those who were interviewed and the waiting list is department-wise instead of track-wise). There could be late invitations and last year, someone got accepted from waitlist on 4.14. If you haven't received anything from the track you applied for in early February (there is still time for this year, I know people received interview on 1.19ish last year), reach out to the admission office or the track or even Fran to confirm. If they say they have sent out all the interviews, it should be considered as a rejection (unfortunate, but for me it's better than waiting with "'hope").

Bad news for international applicants, certain tracks (aging [100% sure] and ID track [not 100% sure but I remembered hearing someone from ID mentioned it] as I know of) will only consider those with citizenship/green cards if they only have a plan for 1 student for the year due to the requirements of NIH T32 training funding, regardless of interviews (they were sent out on a performance basis but admission has other factors to be weighed in)

I have a BSPH epi master of science. My boss was a previous JHU faculty who was a part of the admission process and I have friends/friends of friends all over Epi department (1-4 year PhD students and also applicants (myself a 2nd-time applicant) who are working in JHMI). So it should be accurate.

Thanks for sharing! I truly appreciate this thread and the lack of gatekeeping information! It’s good to fully understand things and share what we know. I work with faculty at Columbia Epi who have been on the admissions committee they take less than 5 students one year one department only accepted one student due to funding. It also comes down to faculty advocating for the applicant in committee. This is my first year applying for programs and I didn’t apply to Columbia yet because the department I wanted isn’t taking applicants at the moment and also they don’t like giving acceptances if they feel you would pick another school as it hurts their stats for accepted students to turn down the offer.

Brown BSHS sent interview invitations today!

Also, just to put this out there, as many of us are getting interviews, rejections, and acceptances, I so appreciate how supportive this forum is! To echo some earlier comments, the right path will happen at the right time. If you don't have a strong support system, or even if you do, know that somewhere out there is someone who's rooting for you! You're not alone.

As a first-gen grad student, I know it can be really hard to navigate the doctoral application process without "insider" knowledge. Higher education is very much a gatekeeping community. So here are some tips I've received so far! It's not an all-encompassing list by any means, but I hope this is helpful. :)

Things you can do to prep for interviews:

    • Review your application materials
    • Review prospective program materials
    • If you know whom you're interviewing with, review their recent publications/CV
    • Prepare questions/answers
    • Prepare email drafts (thank you notes) to send after interviews are over
    • Mock interviews with colleagues, mentors, friends, family
    • Take time to rest and destress!

Things you can ask faculty about:

    • Current and future research
    • Mentorship style
    • How their expertise/experiences/connections align with your career goals
    • Funding/work opportunities for students
    • What they enjoy about working at their school/department

Things you should be prepared to answer:

    • Why a PhD (vs. DrPH, other higher education paths, work, etc.)
    • Why this program vs. other ones
    • Who you'd like to work with and why
    • Your research/public health interests
    • Your career goals
    • Important experiences in your life (challenge you overcame, influential moments, etc.)

Things you can ask current students about:

    • What they (don't) like about the program/department/school
    • What they (don't) like about the area/city
    • Are they happy? Do they feel supported professionally, emotionally, academically?
    • Funding options and affordability (grants, stipend, etc.)
    • General words of advice

This is so helpful! Thanks for sharing!

Hey! I hear you. I had one interview, and it was only an hour long, but I really had to fit my schedule around the interviewers' schedule on a super busy day for me--one I normally only work a half day for because I'm sort of "on stage" facilitating and teaching all morning. I did it, but the ball is really in their court. I'm not sure if they'd care for feedback . . .

Good luck! Sending positive energy to all! Did you interview for a DrPH program? If you don’t mind sharing how was the interview? Was it a faculty member? Or admissions officer? It’s hard not knowing how much weight an interview has on the review process! Still waiting!

hi all- seeking some interview advice here. I have a few interviews with professors coming up and panel interviews (I’ve never done panels). Some of the professors I’m interviewing with don’t have alignment with my interests (they seem to be directors of the program- on my app, I listed other professors in that department). How do you suggest going about this? Yes, I know to talk genuinely about my interests, goals, etc. but, in terms of relating to the interviewers, what should be the game plan?

Are you applying for a PhD? I work with faculty in the Epi department at an Ivy. When they do PhD interviews it doesn’t matter much that the subject matter interest is different. What matters is that you align with department goals , and connect your interest to that. For example for  Epi  they like hearing about experience in stats and interest to advance and apply statistical expertise to subject matter. Maybe check what the interviewers teach, you might be able to connect on a core competency they focus on that is important and useful for obtaining a doctorate! Good luck!
