So, I e-mailed seven professors. One told me that she was leaving the school, so that saved me $70. Another told me to go ahead and apply - that my research sounded 'interesting.' Another said 'their is certainly overlap in our interests' and then asked about my language background (applying to History departments). I responded to him, but he never wrote back The other four have yet to write back ... I hope I didn't annoy them. I guess I should try to remember that Professors are just busy, right?

Thank you for your responses all! It seems like the best I can do at this point is write a really good statement, submit an excellent writing sample, and, of course, pray.

And retaking it is not an option for me since I took it yesterday and apps are due on december 1 ....

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses. Do you think History programs will care about such a low Q score though? I mean, I wont be using math at all ... I just dont know how I dropped from 640 to 380 ...

Hi animel. Are applicants allowed to combine scores? Or do you have to use the scores from one test only?

Yeah. Well, the History programs at Berkeley and Michigan specifically state that they set no minimum GRE scores. I want to take them for their word, but who knows, right? I just ask 'cause I REALLY messed up on the quantitative and earned a 380. The first time I took the GRE I earned a 640 on the Q section. BIG drop. But my verbal went up from 440 to 600. Not a great score, but an improvement. I am not going to use math for my research, but that 380 surprised the hell out of me and scares me. I knew I messed up when the exam asked me 'which is greater? 1/3 or 1/8' I knew it was over ...

I'm applying to history programs, and I am very sad because I just took the GRE. I did really bad. 600V/380Q/AW? So, I am mainly afraid because of my Q score. The first time I took the GRE I scored 440V/580Q/4AW - I went up in the Verbal and went WAY down on the Quant. Does anyone know if this for sure means I will get rejected? I am applying to History programs. Hopefully they overlook this really poor Q score ... Any insight?

OK - So, I'm asking because I got a 600 V ... but 380 Q ... still waiting for the AW ... yeah, i know ... MA GPA is 3.7 ... is it over?

Do most History programs really have GRE cut offs?

hi, I am applying to history programs for mid east history. problem is my undergrad (ucla) gpa was 3.1, but in grad school for my ma in mid east studies, i earned a 3.7. my gre was not all that well either - verbal was 450, but i am retaking it in two weeks and have been studying for months. i am applying to a bunch of places. i really interested in nyu and berkeley. do i have a chance if i get my gre up? if i dont manage to do that, is it still worth applying or should i just forget about it? my language skills are good - i have arabic, and i use it in my writing sample. thanks for your insight! - sorry for the lower case letters ...
