1. Rejected from Berkeley. Not all that sad because the fit was not great, but it would've still be nice to go to Berkeley.
2. Ah, so this is where all the Near Eastern Studies/History people are hanging out. I'm waiting for a few schools still. Good luck to everyone! Congrats Kate!
3. Thanks everyone for your answers. I'm just trying to figure out if NYU, UCLA, and Berkeley have rejected me already, since all of these schools are already notifying applicants. But I guess they would notify waitlisted applicants at the same time, right? Oh well.

Waitlists

Do big schools like UCLA, Berkeley, NYU, and the Ivies have waitlists? For some reason my assumption is that they don't.
5. Congrats to whoever got into UCLA for ME History! Guess I didn't get in
6. Hi I applied to Turkish. Good luck to all of you!
7. I can't believe a professor would say that. What an idiot. I hope you don't let that ever get to you. I think I would've said something really sarcastic and mean to that professor. Wow, I just can't believe that. I'm sorry. Forget that piece of trash.
8. Quick question - do OSU and UIUC have excellent History programs? Even if they don't have a top faculty member in my field there (middle east), would getting a degree from either of these universities be respected - provided I write an excellent dissertation? Thanks!
9. That's great! So does your PA like your application?
10. I managed to get one of the writing samples switched!
11. It's unpardonable and honestly, i think it happened because i was so nervous ... it's not a good excuse obviously, but it's the truth. thanks bhikhaari!
12. I sent two schools (which are my top choices) a writing sample with some pretty bad typos that for some reason I hadn't noticed. Would it be a good idea to call the graduate coordinators and ask them if I can submit a new one?
13. I'm interested in how local groups and individuals in the Ottoman Empire's Arab provinces challenged imperial legitimacy through philanthropy. late 19th early 20th centuries.
14. Are you applying this year or next year? I don't have the grades to go to Princeton, so I did not apply. I was considering Chicago with Professor Shissler, but I didn't think there was much of a fit. Actually, the program seemed very medieval/europe centered, so I did not want to apply. And I didnt apply to NELC because I want a degree in History. Currently I am at a NES program. UCSD is great , but the only concern is that I cannot study Turkish there. I would have to do it during the summers. I have three years of Turkish and one of Ottoman, but I am not fluent yet. Türkçe çok zor I have Arabic, though, so hopefully that helps. My main concern is that my UG GPA was a 2.9. MA GPA though is 3.7. And you and I have similar GRE's. I also just discovered some serious typos in my writing samples for UCLA and Michigan In fact, does anyone know WHO reads the writing sample? Do they read SOP first? I'm curious what is the Turkish phrase for not working hard haha?
15. Hello a piece of bread, I am interested in studying poverty relief in the Arab provinces during the Hamidian and Young Turk periods. My top choices are UCLA, NYU, Berkeley, and Michigan. You applied to a really wide range of schools! Wish I had done that What's your top choice?
16. Thanks! I was freaking out, mainly because Michigan states that "emeritus faculty and faculty with courtesy appointments typically do not read files." However, the online application asked applicants to list four professors. I really only wanted three. I should've wrote down "N/A." Oh, well. I was afraid that it will look as if I didn't do my homework. In fact, after looking at the faculty list more, I realized that there is a professor who I should've listed in my SOP and application but didn't. Sigh ..........
17. you accidentally listed an emeritus professor in your SOP? Not as the main person you to work with but as a person you are interested in working with. Will they toss out the application?
18. I'm applying for Middle East history (late 19th - early 20th century Ottoman) UCLA NYU (Joint PhD in History/MEIS) Berkeley Michigan OSU Illinois - Urbana UCSD Arizona Good luck to all!
19. Probably a dumb question since we most of us are students, buuuuuuut, does anyone (especially in the Humanities) know how the application review process works? What do adcoms read first? Do they start with SOP or Writing Samples? LORs? Thanks, ya'll!
20. Wish I had seen this earlier, cuz I didn't list any other schools. Do you think this will hurt me?
21. I have a similar question - at least three schools ask for a 10 page writing samples. The others say no more than 30 pages. For those schools that ask for no more than 30, do you think it would be bad to submit a 10 pg writing sample?
22. What about font? Is 11 acceptable? or MUST it be 12? The website doesnt specify. It just says two pages double spaced. Obviously, I am not going to send something with 10 font.
23.

wait ... i thought you are SUPPOSED to be specific in an SOP! damn ...
24. I did pretty bad as well. 580V/380Q/4AW ... UG GPA 3.1 , MA GPA 3.7 ... feeling as if I don't have a shot and should just not apply ...
25. Hi everyone - has anyone had the experience where you write professors but they do not write back? I've e-mailed a total of six professors, and only two responded. The one's I am most interested in working with have not responded. Could this mean that they are just not into my work? Or is it because I e-mailed them in November? Maybe they are just busy, but I cannot help but thinking that maybe I said something wrong in my e-mail. I wish they would just say, 'No, I'm not into that' so that I can just move on, apply elsewhere, and save some $. Anyways, here is an edited version of what I sent the professors: Dear X, My name is X, and I am currently a graduate student in X department at X-University. The reason I am writing you is because I am interested in X's PhD program in History. I believe that your expertise on the history of non-elites, labor, and nationalism in the Arab Middle East can guide my own interests concerning MY VERY SPECIFIC RESEARCH INTEREST (perhaps TOO specific?). I was wondering if you will be accepting students for the upcoming school year, and if you think there is enough overlap in our interests for me to pursue them at X. I appreciate you for taking the time to read my e-mail and look forward to hearing from you. Best, X
