  1. Their website 'suggests' that notifications my be via post so fingers crossed for tomorrow. Otherwise will call Monday.
  2. Not heard a thing from RCA Photo even though today was supposed to be the final notification day...
  3. Well it depends which program you're applying for and I know little about those schools listed. I got into a top program with a photojournalistic portfolio but have since drifted to the conceptual side. A brief look at your Flickr tells me: 1. You need to put together a body of work around one concept - mine was kinda loose though. Most applicants can take great pics but they're looking for the ones that can think too 2. Too many of those pics have been photoshopped to death 3. Find someone that's been though an MFA program to help put your portfolio together
  4. That's what I thought. No luck on 2nd year funding yet - backpacking in Africa so bit difficult to sort it out. Something will come up... Maybe it's time to find a rich, single, hot American gal Good luck with the 2012 applications & feel free to ping any questions my way.
  5. Would the 'pro-guns on campus' lobby be happy if I carried the following around school just in case: - a 10 inch kitchen knife? I am very qualified in it's use after years cutting bread in kitchens - a bow and arrow(s)? I am highly skilled in it's use - a pool cue? - a taser? No idea how these work but am sure it's pretty easy. - nunchuckas... (&fwiw, the fists of fury angle is irrelevant unless you want to start cutting people's hands off)
  6. As a Brit hitting NYC this fall, I hadn't even thought about this topic until reading this thread. Interesting debate, however, I really don't see why you need to carry a glock with your Mac and latte into class irrespective of whether it's legal or not.
  7. In exactly the same boat here - MFA Photo in NYC and looking for $$. Ok for 1st year but after that... Do you know if we are eligible for any US loans when in-country? Ta.
  8. Hi I lived there for 8 years so in brief: Atmosphere - well, although it's a small town (still awaiting city status) there is a huge population in the surrounds. The centre is relatively small but more than enough to get all that you will need. A random fact often banded around is that it is the place to undertake market research surveys, apparently it is the most average urban area in the country. Things to do - if you have a car then the opportunities to explore are endless. Located right on the M4 (one of the main arterial roads out of London) you are within 1.5 hours of the west country, Wales, south coast. Birmingham is 2 hours away. If all else fails then it's 25 mins on the fast train to London where you can play to your hearts content - I think you can still get trains back up until 2am over weekends. You may be eligible for a student railcard for ridiculous discounts too. Nightlife - the centre isn't great but the Uni is decent by all accounts. Some cool bars and pubs but the evenings are laiden with chavs getting completely wasted at one of the many soulless establishments in and around the main shopping areas. The two indie / alternative clubs have closed since I left in '06. Music - Reading hosts the second longest running music festival in the world every August bank holiday. Originally know as a hard rock festival, it is now held over 3 days and includes indie, alternative, DJs etc... Around 80,000 attend everyday. The Uni also hosts many gigs. There are a handful of artsy places for theatre etc... Sport - Reading Football club are currently riding high in the second tier and may yet be in the Premiership next season. Lots of opportunities to play all sorts of local level sports. Uni - good reputation and the campus is within a 15 minute walk of the town centre. Plenty of clubs / associations to join. Housing in the local area isn't cheap though. Decent bus links into town but the whole area is walkable if you need to save those pennies - a bike may be a good investment. Crime - average with some areas to avoid but these are mainly on the west side of the centre - the uni is towards the south east. Happy to answer any other queries.
  9. Had just climbed down from an active volcano in eastern DR Congo when a text arrived from the Old Dear. Accepted at No 1 school. GTFI! Glad I didn't receive it whilst on the craters edge.
  10. Waitlist letter sent 24 March via snail mail to the UK stating that they are reviewing it on 1 May. In the depths of Africa so didn't know until late last week.
  11. How did you hear from Parsons? Anyone heard from Pratt or SVA? Rejected from NYU Steinhardt last week.
  12. Theys Yanks is avin a larff innit bruv! ICP-Bard gave me an exemption from TOEFL and a phone conversation with a member of the admissions team. Did have a handy excuse that I'm in the sticks in 'Frika tho
  13. Slightly wilder with a UK BSc from '98 and no semesters worth of photo or art history. Most of the below that I applied to inferred it was pretty much all on the portfolio: Pratt Parsons NYU SVA ICP-Bard Some info through from Pratt but still trying to understand what it means
  14. Ok, so I'm in Africa and the Old Man (never one to be exact when you need him to be) sends me an email (from the UK) Re: MFA Photo application stating that: 'Pratt have sent a graduate bulletin (v large book) plus invitation to an information session etc, letter ends with "look forward to hearing from you"' Is this some kind of acceptance?
  15. Hola I'm a UK photographer looking to undertake the above MFA. This is the first time I've researched the US colleges and it's a little overwhelming at the moment. I'm looking for help in identifying the technically orientated schools - any advice on relevant schools located on the east and west coast? Ta Christoph
