Painting, I am really curious they have different quotas for funding with the different programs...is ceramics a super small program? I don't want too specific but from schools that are not already fully funded. Thank you for the courage, waiting to hear back now!

i got about 50% fellowship offer from RISD....curious if that is similar for other people accepted? mostly curious because I have other offers are full funding and I trying to gauge if asking for a higher award would be uncourteous.

I had my Tyler Painting MFA interview this weekend -- sharing some info for future applicants: - The interview was 20 minutes, about 15 minutes for interview questions and then the last 5 minutes I could ask questions. - There were 6 people, and it was on zoom. Some of the professors were in a room together looking at a screen and the others were on their own individual devices in different places. - For the interview itself...The first question was "why grad school at this time" and then most of the interview centered around why I wanted to go to Tyler, how likely I would be to go if they made me an offer, and what I would bring to the program. It was a friendly interview, but I didn't get to talk about the specifics of my practice or me as an artist really. It was pretty purely focused on me as a potential "grad student". I am sure the questions very person to person, but yeah, not sure what to make of it. Very grateful to be interviewed nonetheless! I'm curious to hear what the interviews are like in the other Tyler departments.

I had my RISD Painting interview. I think it went really well from what I could tell. They asked me pretty much everything I wanted to be asked, and I hopefully came off well (?). I didn't stutter or ramble which was my main concern lol. I figured I would share some details for future interviews: - The zoom was all the core faculty - so the Dept head, the grad director and 5 professors. They were each on their own device, not all in the same room. - They asked me to introduce myself and then each person asked one question. There was one oddball question, Why Risd, and then the rest were really specific to my work. It was clear they had actually looked at my work and there was one explicit reference to my statement. I wasn't asked artist references or what I have been reading. But I had these in my statement, so maybe that is why. They also didn't ask me about the conventions of painting, it was much more about the depth of the themes in painting so - "how do you think about (theme) in your work?" I was also asked where I see room for development in my work towards the end. - They went into the details of the program (course structure, opportunities, TAing, etc). So the questions were like 15 min, and then this was 15 min. (I wasn't expecting them to outline the program...because I extensively researched the program before applying. But I guess they are assuming this knowledge isn't universal) - My interview ran long, but at the end I could've asked question if there had been time left. - They also asked if I filled out FAFSA yet. Even after I said yes, they really persisted that they cant give out scholarship until its submitted so submit it ASAP. lol. So make sure you submit documents before your interviews, I guess. - They were friendly, but not explicit with any praise. There was only one or two moments that gave me the impression that they were impressed with me. I am sure this is pretty standard for these types of interviews (nice but aloof). - They said I would hear back within the next 3 weeks.

From the info in the email I got, the dates of interviews for me to choose from were the 24th, 25th, 26th and 29th. But they didn't indicate whether or not all the invites had been sent out or if there are multiple rounds of interviews.

I will cross my fingers you get an invite for Photo soon! all of this waiting and speculating is awful haha.

Yeah - 20 minute time slots on Saturday and Sunday. I am sure it varies from one department to another - it seems like sculpture has multiple interviews potentially from what someone said?? but they gave me no indication of if that is true for Painting. The email was just an automated email from the department head to book a time via a calendar application. It actually kind of came off as unprofessional because the email subject line was, "Book time with me without back-and-forth discussions" and then it was just a kind of nonsensical paragraph that had clearly been distorted through whatever app he was using. So if I hadn't recognized the name of the department head, it would've seemed like a scam. And then to make it even more confusing, the calendar wasn't updated to actually book a time until this morning. Overall weird - lol. From the description in the email, I get the impression that the Tyler interviews are really trying to see what you would bring to the program, why you are motivated to get an MFA and why specifically at Tyler. The tone was really quite different from what RISD sent me.

First time applicant - it has been helpful to see when people heard back from different programs last year so... I got an interview invitation to RISD (Painting MFA) on Jan 17th.
