  1. I agree! I have been gaining weight but that's no mystery since I am a stress eater (and general food lover, really don't get the people who don't like the taste of food/wish I was one of them). I also had a dream, but yours sounds much more promising. Mine was that I had an interview at Yale (already rejected in real life btw) but I didn't really know what was going on and then suddenly realized I was 20 minutes late for a half-hour interview. It was in this weird lecture hall with super stadium seating and a bunch of people were just chilling around. The interviewers were at a table in the middle looking up and I was freaking out that I was late and apologizing like crazy since I honestly had no idea why I was late or that I was even having an interview, but didn't want to tell them that. Anyway the biaaatch who was interviewing after me got to kind of steal my interview, so we were having this bizarre dual/duel interview that became like jeopardy minus the buzzers. She kept responding first and I was like "hell no this is my interview," so I kept trying to interject at the end of what she said, but I so cleary sucked. They were asking questions like "What do you think of the SCB?" And I was like WTFFF is that??? but my enemy girl knew so I tried to BS about that too. Anyway it all came to a close when they asked to collect my notes for the interview... I was like um I didn't think I was really supposed to have any (the other girl had a neatly-typed booklet of course) but I had these weird notes about who the interviewers were, such as"she likes cats and is quite mean" and I had to hand them over! Horrible, weird dream, which, at least, will not be a reality since there will be no Yale interview. See people, there are positives to being rejected. No embarassing epic interview fails.
  2. I did get an email from Cranbrook today saying that they have all of my materials (well my application) and so I'm hoping that means they will be reviewing materials this week!!!
  3. Yeah I'm curious about this because it seems to be just sculpture that has heard back so far, but I'm sure the other departments aren't far behind if that is the case...
  4. Congrats on the acceptance and the interviews! That must feel so nice to be getting some positive answers so soon. I think with federal aid its tricky whether they take your parent's money into account or not. My issue is that I want to be independant and not have my parents help me out, but then I just will have a boat load of high-interest loans... What a genius idea on the vacation thing. I wish I had money because I would fly to England and visit my friend and hide there til I know where I'm going, if anywhere, next year.
  5. I'm not sure how i feel about hearing from Yale on a Friday night... Oh well I know being rejected that I have 97% of you in the same boat and I agree with what other people are saying, it's not bad being the first rejection with such a low acceptance rate, i just hope I don't have more!
  6. From looking at other topics it seems like the next few weeks will be a time to start hearing about interviews as well as some early acceptances and rejections. It also seems that many of you are like me, checking this forum at 4am on a Sunday as if people have actually heard and posted new information since the last time I checked at midnight. SO, I figured lets just put it all right here so we can easily tell what's going on/if others are getting interviews and we are not etc. So far I've heard NOTHING from anywhere: Yale Tyler American UConn SMFA U Washington Eastern Michigan University Cranbrook New York Academy of Art U Mass Dartmouth Art Institute of Boston
  7. About 1,000 (vultures of doubt). I agree with the whole mood swing thing. I go from being confident (how can they not see how hard I've worked???) to a complete mess of doubt. I try to explain to everyone that it's statistically easier to get into Yale law school than Yale art school. I think in some ways it must be nice to have GRE scores as your way to get into grad school because then you know exactly how good you are on a scale and exactly what schools take which scores. The subjectivity involved with a portfolio in addition to how much it means to you is a whole other level of pressure. It's insane.
  8. Also applied to Tyler Painting, also heard nothing. GAH! this is so soon, and that's bizarre that they contacted people on a weekend. I've been having crazy dreams about interviews because I know I need to go through them for tons of schools but am a super awkward interviewee. I come across much stronger in papers/essays because I'm horrible at thinking on my feet and bragging about myself in a really down to earth way. I mean how do people even pull that off???
  9. Are other people wondering why why why graduate schools can't work out a common app? I know they are all unique and want to weed out people who are just applying because its easy, BUT can't they at least all use slideroom, or all online based app including recommendations etc. Each of my schools seems to have something uniquely annoying about it. Some ask for half of the materials to be sent to the grad school while the rest needs to be sent to the art school. Some have all online, others have only some components, some ask for uploaded portfolios, others ask for disks, some want slide sheets, some want them formatted in completely different ways, some want two essays, some want one, some want you to talk more about your portfolio, and others more about your graduate and career goals. IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE! How many envelopes and how much postage do they want. How fun is sorting all of that stuff anyway??? And why oh why can't they tell me if they have all of my applications materials??? Anyway I just needed a mini rant. I thought getting everything done would put me at ease but now I can't relax about hearing from places and whether others have heard anything. I need a vacation from myself.
  10. Thanks, that's very helpful, I'm just wondering if that's what they want in the essays... is this just a place to elaborate on those ideas?
  11. So most schools have a place for a description of your images and I was just wondering what people are putting in this section. Are people putting in depth decriptions about the concepts behind their pieces, etc OR are people putting details about the materials or aesthetic components OR are people leaving this section blank? Any thoughts?
  12. I agree! I just borrowed a friend's nice digital camera but the quality still wasn't up to what I wanted but I don't really have $600+ to drop on a nice camera/tripod for this event considering all of the other costs/application fees. I say FFFFFFF it they should be able to tell if they want to see more and hear more from me about my work or not from decent quality photographs. I also felt like there was nothing I could do to quite get the color perfect with some of the photographs when I was editing them, but its like, what can I do?
  13. Yes! Thank you for writing this. I am also a procrastinator and have been trying really hard to go against my nature and get everything done. I just completed the paintings I plan on submitting, but still have a lot of essay work to do and 2 of my recommenders are being really unresponsive and slow with the whole process. Also photographing my work is always a pain especially since color and display on every computer is so radically different. All of my deadlines are in January or later, but I just kind of wanted to chill for Christmas you know?
  14. I'm also terrified about this process. Undergrad was painful enough it's awful going through it all again. I'm really struggling with my essay right now because I think it could make or break my application. If people get into more "safety" schools do you think you'll wait another year and reapply to other schools or do you think you'll go to your safeties? Also does anyone have any advice on the essay? I've got a basic outline but I want to avoid sounding cliche. Does anyone know what worked for people?
  15. I looked at a lot of programs online...A LOT and I lowered it down by a few criteria, 1) I wanted a 2 year program rather than 3 2) Did they still offer private studios or other facilities seen in more upscale schools 3) Did the faculty or students produce work that is similar to mine (for me that was figurative and leaning toward realism, things which aren't seen that often any more) basically does it seem like you could learn a lot there I ended up with a few Michigan schools, Eastern Michigan, Michigan state as well as UMASS Dartmouth. They were all sort of random, but something caught me with each. I liked some state schools in California which I ended up eliminating. You might want to get a super used copy of the U.S. News Report because they have a list of the top 50 art graduate programs and its a good place to get started.
  16. So I'm new to this forum for exactly this topic... WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR??? Now I know its basically that you want to answer any questions they may have, but I'm nervous about standing out at a place like Yale that must go through ridiculous numbers of applications. If others don't want to share their statements (thank you to those who did) then could you share what you think made your statement unique enough to get you in? What do they prefer that you emphasize (what your work is about, why you want grad school, why you want their particular program, etc, etc)? I just don't feel like I have a snazzy cohesive explanation of my work ready such as "I'm deeply involved in using mixed media to show how eating disorders affect men as well as women in america and the juxtaposition of newspaper text and paint blah blah blah." Really I am just painting portraits. I think I'm very dedicated to and passionate about my work and like I can speak and write about it intelligently, it's just that I don't feel like I have a concise theorectical concept behind it that most artists do who are a part of the more prestigious MFA programs. Basically I feel a little lost and any advice would be superb. Thanks
