First year, only WLed at Arkansas. Second year, nada. This year, WLed at Arkansas and three other places (including a super competitive reach school). For Arkansas, I used the same sample but heavily modified. I think I am higher up on the list this time, but the process can be pretty random so. For the SoP, I refrained from mentioning that I was repeatedly applying here, just mentioned that this was my third go around.

Just curious, but what's up with the fiction results at Arkansas?

This is my third year applying. First year, five rejections with a waitlist that didn't pan out. Second year: crickets. This year, while I'm already drowning in rejections, I have one waitlist and a phase 2 in play that just might turn into something. I understand why people say it's not over until it's over. At the same time, I understand how draining hope can be: as someone who has had one thing go wrong after the other, sometimes, distance is the only way to go. I do hope you get in somewhere. If not, for the next cycle, I wish you better luck. In the meantime, if you have writer friends, talk to them and if you can, apply to online workshops (one of the only reasons I was able to apply again is because of a supportive workshop). At the same time, if you feel the need to take a break from writing, do that. If you want to continue, do that. You only lose your shot at being a writer if you stop, sure, but taking a hiatus never killed anybody. I hope you get in somewhere. PS: This is for anyone who is feeling super shitty. The quote feature is bugging out on me.

Essentially, if anyone wants to be part of a support group/online workshop, we could do that. I became part of a group like that following my second attempt and it had been immensely helpful.

I'm sorry for what you had to go through. I think I have a disdain for 'correct' muslims (unless I am proven wrong) because of how hateful and power-hungry they are (something rampant in Bangladesh). Sufism is super cool; sufism and zen buddhism are some of the things I want to dive deeper into for my novel. I'm glad that you are editing your piece; I really hope something good comes out of it. Closer than you think given that I have a future project in mind taking place in either Indonesia or the Philippines or even Bangkok (which means singapore might just play a big role). Having worked in corporate, unfortunately, who you know plays a deep role almost anywhere. Think of it like this, you have 500 potential candidates. If you know even 10 of them, bias on a subconscious level would obviously seep in, especially since trying to objectively measure 500 candidates is a daunting task, especially on a corporate deadline. More overtly, if someone is recommended from a trusted source, there will always be a favorable impression working for them contingent upon them further encouraging such an impression. Yes, in the corporate world of publishing, these things matter - especially given the tight constraints that come with a 'corporate' work culture. It doesn’t mean that people don't have talent, but in a sea of talent, people making decisions -- either consciously or subconsciously -- look for guidance as well (in fact, corporations in general recommend referrals, so I wouldn't be surprised if the publishing industry follows a similar suite). It is what it is, really.

I'd love to read your work. It's ramadan here, and the iowa thing has pretty much sapped me of all energy. But I'll get to it by this week if you want. I'm not sure how you can send it to me though? Also, I'm a business grad as well, so I'm pretty much on the same boat, a duckling that wants to fly and all that.
