um i think it went fine? I thought it was weird they had an adjunct as one of the 3 interviewers... no other school seemed to have an adjunct prof on the panel, and (besides ucla of only 2 faculty) all the rest had like 5+ interviewers ***EDIT... idk i forgot how they introduced Cal but I looked him up and he just graduated from sculpture at columbia LAST YEAR. .... I can't remember if they said he was an adjunct or what, Keli is listed as an adjunct, Cal you can't even find in the directory.... sorry but low key this feels like major disrespect from the school like.. your tenured grad faculty cant be bothered to interview finalists???? so much that a recent grad and an adjunct are conducting the interview?? jesus.... yeah i think we got along fine i maybe stopped to look at my notes too often or took to long to answer their questions so the interview felt a little short or rushed but whatever. maybe I could have had better answers. I hate when they ask what you will offer the program... smh. .... how did your interview go? lol same im assuming im getting waitlisted which is fine. although in the interview they were very eager to let me know that i would hear back by this week lol. said without me even asking . whatevs im feelin breezy.
-
in my interview with them yesterday for sculpture they said we should hear back by the 3rd week of march latest
-
ohh thank you ohhh i see I found them. yeah i visited a friend in the MFA program at CMU in june and they made it sound like eh its alright. thats a quick turnaround from if you had your interview this past saturday! thats when mine was but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if itll be a rejection. 3 years is too long anyway i want to get on with my life lol
-
in my interview on friday 2/23 they said I'd hear back from them by the end of next week, meaning like March 1 or March 3 about. carnegie mellon? what negative comments? Through phone call?
-
when i interviewed friday they said i would be hearing from them by the end of this week so I'm assuming march 1 or the 3rd. i interviewed for sculpture.
-

-
yall i gave an artist talk at this time yesterday and i was already 3 mimosas deep.. lmao. and then we went out right after till 9:30. stg i woke up drunk until 1:30pm today but im a big lightweight sooo

Hey they are need-blind but that means the opposite. It means if you filled out the fafsa and css they use that to determine your aid, not by merit. I’ve never heard of a school rejecting someone because they didn’t have funding.
-
From speaking with the sculpture department head, he made it seem clear that decisions for the whole school of art would come out mid-march. They give the financial aid with the admission decision so this is why it takes a little longer to my understanding.

ive heard historically that current/ or 1st year students have a say in who gets in. But this round I didn't hear anything specifically mentioning that, or even mentioning that students would be privy to the interviews. I'm not under the impression that there is a separate 'student interview'. I don't know if that has ever been a thing. Perhaps when they had interviews in person (pre-covid), current students were also there, but that wasn't the case this year for (at least) yale sculpture interviews. My interview with VCU sculpture did have current students in it actually and they asked me each a question I believe. They were alongside faculty.
-
just had my yale sculpture interview. Each interviewer asked a different question it seemed like they had it all planned out. Martin and Aki were sweet, the rest a little cold or like you know poker face which is fine. These are the questions they asked me: What is your process from conception of idea to creation? How to you deal with differences in opinion, especially considering the small department size? What facilities do you anticipate using? Why grad school now? and why. yale? How will you navigate different opportunities or shows that may come up during grad school, since it is an intensive full-time program? I feel good about my responses and everything I showed overall, but maybe did expect it to be a little more personable. they said we'd hear back early march on decisions. The questions part is so quick almost to the point that I felt like my answers were a little rushed or cut off quickly. I prepped answers to most of these questions but i feel like I mightve missed part of them since it went so fast.

US student. I think I checked the page or box that said do you want to be considered for fellowships if there was anything like that . I think maybe everyone is if you send the fafsa? I can’t entirely remember. And thank you I was really happy to hear it as I was deeply sad about not getting an interview for the PD soros fellowship. This ucla one would be essentially the same financial support for I think at least a year. Hopefully it’s both but we’ll see

I interviewed in sculpture and this Sunday 2/18 the dept head called me to get more information to nominate me for this fellowship I think. He said they give the financial aid offer with the admission decision so I think I have a good chance. This is for sculpture though not sure how other dept heads manage etc. He said it would be a while still until admissions decisions come out because they still had to meet all together all the departments to review and then they have to send that to another office that contacts the applicants etc etc So mid march is what he made it seem like I believe.

hey yall i took a few days to replay the UCLA Sculpture interview in my head and jot any questions I remembered they asked so here's those.. where are you at right now? what are you doing after? what are your future plans? you run 2 galleries? how does that work? is it for profit or non-profit? asked a lot about specific pieces/ processes How did you get to work with _____ Museum/ reserves? Do you know Rhino? They were impressed I knew Maya Why do you want an MFA? To them it seemed like I had shows and stuff lined up, like why do I want an MFA if I’m showing and doing residencies. Have you been to LA? Do you ever want to teach? Would you want to do a TAship? Did you apply to other schools? Art schools or research schools? What interests you about UCLA being a public university? Overall I think it went really well especially being my first interview. Just 2 sculpture faculty. An alum told me they are a more casual vibe than formal and I found that to be the case in the interview.
-
yeah i just got an interview request from Columbia Sculpture with the same un-clear-ness. I'm going to ask if they can cover airfare or something but not really sure. Is it correct to assume that most schools DO NOT cover in-person interview costs? the sculpture interview days seem to be feb 29 and march 1
-
I also did! VCU sculpture. Mine is for feb 23 lol right after my Yale one so that day will be full of nerves lol I’ll give you a heads up what they ask. I had my ucla interview yesterday and I’m just trying to remember all the questions they asked I’ll post them soon. It went really well with ucla. and congrats on getting interviews back on all! send me a dm would love to know your work
-
lol im usually only a social drinker but the nerves have been making me have a hard seltzer at night lol so im with you there nothing from VCU sculpture yet. I have an interview with UCLA sculpture tomorrow, which I think is likely their last day from sculpture bc they originally proposed only monday times
