Sure, but I think they also don’t fund everyone equally. I think that even if this is a worse year than others, many of the well funded programs regularly select 3 or less students per year 😞

What programs usually take 5 or 6 applicants? I’ve never heard of any program taking more than 4…

Yes! I reapplied to those (there were only a few) and others! So far 3 of the 4 I applied to last year have admitted me this year (the other I’m still waiting to hear about)!

Harvard has admitted its ethno and musicology students…not sure if they have the same schedule for composition? I haven’t heard back from UC Berkeley or Columbia, I don’t think they’ve finalized their admits yet, and didn’t apply to UCSD or Yale!

I thought it went well, and was pretty friendly and with somewhat creative questions! That said, I don’t know anything about how they do their choosing! Wishing you luck!!

I interviewed with UPenn in Ethno in January, but haven’t heard from them yet…

I just want to say that last year I was waitlisted at two places, rejected from two places, and the only place I got in was just not the right place for me. I took the risk and decided to reapply. I applied to 10 schools this time, all really great programs. So far I have heard back from 5 and have 4 admits and 1 waitlist. I never fully believed I’d have such a hard choice ahead of me. Don’t lose hope!

Hmmm. I was told by someone who is currently in the musicology program, and who asked their cohort in Ethno, theory and musicology, and they said that not everyone was formally interviewed. Many ppl spoke lengthily to a faculty member in advance of the interview, and then casually once accepted. The person I know was approached for a casual interview bc they had not reached out ahead of time. But maybe it’s different every year? I don’t know.

For musicology? Or Ethno?

Anyone know if Columbia does interviews? I heard that they only do them if you didn’t meet with professors beforehand? Just curious

Ok, we're at April 10th and I was told that one program I was waitlisted for has admitted the students who accepted and no longer can admit anyone off the waitlist. But I'm still on the waitlist at my very top choice... I heard from one professor that he doesn't think either applicant that was admitted has responded, and that he assumes they must have other attractive offers and are having a hard time deciding. He said "perhaps that's good news" in reference to the possibility that I could still get in.. Is that likely? or is it likely that they also are waiting to see if they got in off a different waitlist? I mean, this is a VERY good program, so it's hard to imagine that people wouldn't just accept outright by now if they had not gotten in anywhere else super super good that they were trying to decide about... Should I be hopeful? I got into the MA program I'm in now via the waitlist, I was notified on April 17th. So...is this hopeful? What does it usually mean when you are in the top of the waitlist and they still haven't rejected you by now?

HAS ANYONE HEARD FROM NYU?????? Why is this so late? I keep thinking maybe I'm waitlisted or rejected, but I dont think anyone has heard. Is this just because the deadline was so much later for this program???

I'm in the ethno track, so maybe they're not connected at all? I'm 1st on the ethno track at Duke, but who knows :-/. I'm also waitlisted at another place which is my first choice...and still waiting to hear back from NYU.

Duke does do interviews, at least in the ethno track, bc I did one and I was waitlisted there right at the end of January...still waiting to hear. Also very stressed like everyone because I am waiting on several programs and not sure if I'm about to be waitlisted for literally everything and be in limbo for so long
