  1. I had good inentions about going to the gym, but I haven't made it since classes started.

I want to get back into working out, but in the mean time I've been walking to class, TAing, study group, etc every day. It's not super strenuous, but it's at least 30 mins to 1 hour depending on the day.

  2. I'm taking three classes this semester and TAing for three sections of undergrad history. I only have to attend one section, but I do the grading and hold office hours for all three sections.

    Monday: TA from 10-11

    Office Hours 11-12

    Tuesday: Maritime History 9:30-10:45

    Arch Theory 11-12:15

    Ship Construction 12:30-1:45

    Study Group 2-3:30

    Wednesday: TA from 10-11

    Office Hours 11-12

    Thursday: Maritime History 9:30-10:45

    Arch Theory 11-12:15

    Ship Construction 12:30-1:45

    Study Group 2-3:30

    Friday: TA from 10-11

    Office Hours 11-12

  3. Tar River! It's more expensive, but closer to campus and a lot nicer than some of the other places I looked at. How about you?

Have you been to campus yet?

I just got back from my Greenville/ECU visit. I sat in on a class and met with the profs at Eller House and the grad advisor.

  4. My summer plans are to:

    - brush up on my French

    - do some background reading in nautical archaeology

    - hang out at the beach for a few weeks

    - pack and move to the other side of the country! Eep!

I'm counting down the days until the last day of school (I teach high school history) - 31 school days left!!!!

  5. Sheperd,

I did my undergrad at ASU. I graduated a while ago, so a lot my favorite hole in the wall places are closed.

Here is a list of good restaurants that I remember:

    - Pita Jungle (big menu - mediterranean, pizza, sandwiches, etc)

    - Rula Bula (Irish - GREAT grilled cheese)

    - PF Changs (pacfic rim)

    - Slices (pizza)

    - Sugar Bowl (in Scottsdale - old fashion ice cream/soda shop)

    Grocery Shopping:

    - Trader Joes

    Hope that helps a little!

  6. Last year I applied to five schools and was rejected from all of them. Before this application season I worked as a research assistant, got a new letter of recommendation, and wrote a new SOP. This time I was accepted to five schools, but two were consolation MAs and one was an unfunded PhD. That leaves two schools and my dilemma:

I want to study 20th century US naval/military history and get a PhD.

School A: PhD program in military history

Should be getting an out of state tuition waiver and a small scholarship ($1,000)

Uncommon for first years to get dept. funding, but funding is common the other years

At this point I'm not sure if the funding is definite or for how much (they've been on break)

School B: MA in Maritime Studies/naval history

Out of state tuition waiver, scholarship to cover remaining tuition, TA position with stipend - all for 2 years

This school wants an answer by March 24th

I'm going to call Monday morning and talk to the department at school A to see what the deal is with funding for the other years (amounts, if all the post first years have it, etc).

I'm not sure what to do! Is it dumb to turn down the MA for possible funding at the PhD? Should I do the MA and then reapply again later? I'm just not sure I want to have to apply again in two years.

    Any suggestions?

  7. Thanks!

Admission wise I've done pretty good this season, but now I'm waiting to hear about funding from the PhD programs (my only funding offer so far is from an MA program). I'm stressing because I don't want to end up with no funding...

  8. Hope you don't mind me asking, when and how did you find out? I've been talking to someone who is waiting on OSU and I know a lot of us have already gotten word, both positive and negative. He called like a lot of us also did, but they're keeping him dangling and saying sometime this week. I'm his official Gradcafe correspondent because he thinks being here will make him even more paranoid :)

On another note, is anyone still waiting on Georgetown? They are the last school I'm waiting on and it's killing me.

    Re: Ohio State

I was told to check back this week to see about a TA postion, so I called again today. I found out that I am on the TA list, but that there are 30 names on the list and they are only taking 20. Unfortunetly, I am at the very bottom...

  9. I thought I had turned in all my applications early (I had everything in Nov. 18th), but I was looking through the TAMU website today for any hint of when decisions would be made and I came across the history department application info page that said the application deadline was Nov. 15!

I have written down Decemeber 15th. Am I crazy? Did it change? Did I completely ruin any chance of getting in by turning my stuff in Nov. 18th (the paper materials arrived on the 20th)?

  10. Field: Military History (20th century US)

Schools: Chapel Hill, Duke, Temple, GWU, OSU, UNT, Kansas State, Texas A&M, and ECU

This is round two for me, so fingers crossed! :oD
