  1. Thanks A-Murphy! I have been wroking really hard at my current institution, getting involved in research, hopefully publishing at least two papers soon. My weakest point is the GRE. I do not have time to study fro the GRE until June, when I am done with my Masters. I will be applying this December, so I can devote a considerable amount of time to the GRE. You are right about the 1200 score. That is the score that I am aiming towards, but I don't know if I can reach it, especially with the new GRE test. It sucks that the GRE matters to them so much, when they know it doesnt measure didly-squat!!!!!!
  2. Thanks for the advice. I will most definately tailor my SOP to research, because thats what I want to do. Teaching wont get me tenure. I have visited Albany in the past and was impressed by their academics. Although somewhat dismayed at their small library. Their faculty was really friendly and the students loved the school. However, some key people that i was interested in will be leaving soon When I was there, I got the feeling that they were in competition with Maryland. My current stats are: Undergrad GPA 3.6 (top 60) Grad GPA 3.9 (JJAY) 1 publication in a communications journal 7 Conference presentations (ASC, ASA, APA) 1 Publication in a CJ journal in the works Hopefully publish my Master's thesis My main concer is my GRE. When I took it out of undergrad I got a 900. The GRE is the main reason why I didn't apply this year. I hope I can bring it up, when I study again. I would be really upset if my GRE score holds me back from some amazing schools like ALBANY and Maryland.
  3. To all those that have applied to Maryland and gotten in, would you mind posting your stats? Do you have any specific advice for Maryland and other top programs. Thanks!
  4. I think this is was my last year. The next time I will apply is when I am in a doctoral program... Its sad, but I am really relieved. I hated those months waiting for the final word. Now I can move on and properly prepare for the future. I wish you all luck! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me! Later!
  5. Im not bummed out as I thought I would be. I am actually relieved that I got rejected now. Being rejected in April sucks. At least now, I can plan appropriately. Like my momma says "Hey, at least you tried!"
  6. The Fulbright was my ticket out of my shitty job!
  7. I got an email from Fulbright directly...but I figured it was bad news...oh well..shit happens...time for Plan C,D,E,F
  8. Im not applying anymore for the Fulbright! Good luck everyone. Wish you all the best!
  9. Just got the email...I was rejected!
  10. When i applied in 2009 I wanted to study the domestic violence rate differences in urban and rural Albania. This year, I wanted to study the Illegal Cigarette Market
  11. I emailed my advisor this morning letting her know that the application decisions were going to be sent out early and that she will know ahead of time. I also asked her to email me if she heard anything, good or bad. This is what she wrote: "I will be in touch soon" (@ 6:50AM) The whole day didn't write anything to me. Im definately thinking I am out of the running. I am tired of being rejected by the Fulbright people. My topics are always too sensitive. All they want are people who will look at the country's culture, its never about any real social issues or conducting social science research.
  12. Ok people here are some hints. In 2009, I received my email at 9:21AM (New York Time) The subject of the letter was Your Fulbright Applications. The letter contained the following info: Dear Albanski, I am pleased to inform you that the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education (IIE) has recommended you for a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the academic year 2009-10. Your application has been forwarded to the supervising agency abroad for final review. In addition, your application will be forwarded to the program sponsor, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, for transmittal to the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). The FSB makes final decisions on Fulbright awards. This letter is not notification of a grant since the number of recommended candidates exceeds the number of awards available. If you are selected for an award the supervising agency overseas will inform you of your status. If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE. For further information about the next stage in the selection process, go to the website: https://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/apply/FAQ_Final_Steps.pdf Since selection is a lengthy process, the final decision may not be made before the end of June. In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there are factors that could preclude your accepting the grant. Receipt of a grant is contingent upon: (a) approval by the FSB; ( concurrence by the supervising agency abroad; © medical and research clearances; (d) security factors in the country of your application; and, (e) availability of funds. Congratulations on your success in the preliminary stages of the competition. Sincerely yours, Theresa Granza, Director, U.S. Student Programs
