I know I sound crazy, but just checking -- your professor understood this is for MFA Creative Writing in general? Wasn't just talking about one genre, either?
-
Have you committed yet, or just turning down programs that aren't in the running? I guess it makes sense to open up spots on waitlists if you know for sure.
-
There was one in this forum. Guessing they just didn't add it to the spreadsheet.
-
Yeah, I think Notre Dame is done.
-
Tinky, I am so happy for you!!! This is your #1, right?
-
I just checked this a few days ago. I think the number for fiction is 5. EDIT: Just looked it up to be sure: In the past few years, the department has received between 900 and 1,050 applications. This year, the department anticipates offering admission to five fiction writers, five poets, and two candidates who apply to pursue work through the digital and cross-disciplinary track.

Rooting for you, KennyK!
-
Fantastic!! Congrats! (gorgeous campus, btw)
-
Yeah, but they were waitlisted at UT Austin and rejected by Michigan. I imagine it would be quite something to read grapefruit's work. Fit must come into play.
-
This makes me so happy! I have been quietly rooting for you, Jane, since you told us about your horrible program director. Fingers crossed you make it off the waitlist!!!
-
Hi nauseated! Is that MALS with Creative Writing concentration at Dartmouth?
-
Congratulations! Huge accomplishment!!
-
Congratulations!!! What wonderful choices!
-
I can't say for sure since I don't know the intricacies of NIH funding, but Notre Dame has a HUGE private endowment (50% greater than that of WashU.)
-
Notre Dame's program isn't undergoing any changes.

Re: IWW Someone has to be the last person to get a phone call. This feels like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

As of Saturday 8 am EST, 2 Fiction.

I hear you!! Thank you for the advice. I will make sure she is thinking about mentorship.
-
I am out of reactions, but thank you for this advice!
-
Thank you, Jane, for this perspective!

Thank you. I should have added that my friend also isn't particularly interested in any of the professors at the fully-funded opportunity. She is more interested in working with professors in other programs to push her own writing.
-
Opinions please. What are your thoughts on giving up a fully-funded opportunity to try again next year for a program you want more - first year applying. Reasons include a more prestigious program might open more doors opportunity-wise and could be considered a solid enough credential to teach at a prestigious university. This is not my situation. I am trying to advise a friend (for real). I am not the friend.

I saw Idaho for poetry on the Draft, but nothing about fiction. I think it is possible that the 3 people they accept for fiction just aren't on draft and rejections haven't gone out yet. I was assuming a soft rejection, but maybe I am pessimistic.

I am an older student finishing up a masters with a creative writing concentration (nonfiction) at a well-known university. My thesis advisor suggested I apply to MFA programs once I graduate. When I objected that no one would want someone my age, she disagreed. Your current program director is an idiot. Ignore him.

That sounds great! If I may offer some advice if you don't receive an acceptance this year: take some undergrad fiction writing classes. You are in a uniquely favorable position -- some of the professors in the grad program also teach undergrad classes. You will get to know the professors and know what they are looking for. You would also start to gain from their knowledge of the craft, which is exactly what you would want from the MFA program. Good luck!!
