  1. From my experiance GRE's are a major factor but I am in the Humanities. What can a student do to improve his/her chances to being accepted into a Computer Science mater's it seems like competition for any program has increased.
  2. Hello GradCafe Community, I recently went through the grad cycle for fall 2009. It was crazy and I was lucky to get into a school. My bf will be applying for a M.S. in computer science or something closely related for Spring 2010. I have provided him with advice on what I learned from going through the grad cycle but I am not in the Computer Science field. I was wondering how important the GRE is and what the average score is to have a chance to get into a good school like a top Ivy or even somewhere like the University of Maryland. My bf has a cum. gpa of 3.6 what should he aim to get in the GRE? is the grade point average considered bad or low to have a good chance. Any advice or feedback is greatly appreciated Thanks
  3. I applied to both and have not heard back yet. On the results page I saw 2 0r 3 posted that they received an email that stated they were likely to get admission into GW.
  4. Thanks everyone you have given me hope i have the grades just terrible GRE's maybe I still have a chance too.
  5. I applied to seven M.A. programs and have not heard anything yet but I am sure PhD programs should be receiving notifications now as reflected in the results page.
  6. Just trying to expand on what is listed on the results page. This is mostly because I feel like my chances of getting into any schools are very little.
  7. Hello Everyone, Like all of you I am also refreshing my emial box every 2 seconds and anxiously checking the mail everyday. This is an attempt to gather the stats of everyone that has been admitted or rejected so that in the future those who want to apply to programs can have an idea of a "general profile" for various programs. Thanks for sharing School: Program (MA/PhD): status(accepted/rejected/waitlisted): GPA: GRE: work experiance(yrs):
  8. Hello Everyone, I applied to SAIS for their international Relations MA.I recently got an invite from SAIS to attend a 2009 applicant information session. I live in the area and will be attending. I was wondering if anyone had previous experiance going there or if you will be attending? Thanks
  9. I was thinking about it in terms of human development but I understand what you are saying.
  10. education does not necessarily have to mean academia. However, I am a strong believer in that it should be promoted to the full extent. Although there are other means by which to gain an education, the purpose of education should be to create a citizenry capable of critical thinking beyond what is given in the media or beliefs that are a consequence of socialization. Academia is the best means by which people can obtain a good education.
  11. Thanks! I kind of started my SOP the same way. A sentence or two about my personal background and then went into my interest experiance and how the school meets my needs. I had someone read it and comment that an intro with personal information might be weak. My first paragraph starts with "Education is the only means by which people gain empowerment and expand their opportunities." I go on to explain how this belief was shaped through my academic and personal experiance. I also mention what I want to do with my degree. By the way good luck on your applications
  12. I have finished writing my statement of purpose. However, I need clarification on some questions that I still have. Can anyone share their experiance writing or reading sop's? some of the questions I have are? How close are staments of purpose looked at? With school having numerous applications do they look for a good introduction only? should I "brag" about myself? I have a combination of personal reasons I want to study in my field but also mention some strong academic points. Should there be a balance? what do you think good statement of purpose should have? any advice would be helpful-thank you (applying to IR or political science MA)
  13. Thank you everyone I believe this makes me feel better.I really hope I can get into A program even if its Howard. I will most likely go for a masters and build up my profile for the Phd.
  14. sea history: I think George Mason has a progam in conflict resolution that does not require GRE's but im not sure about applying to a program so specific since I am thinking about academia in the long run. FSIA: Thanks =) Slothy: You are correct I am part of a STEP program. I have been with the department for over a year and was offered to come back into the SCEP program since I will be going to grad school. All I need to do is get accepted into A grad school. However, I want to go to a good program for an MA becuse I would like to stay in academia.I would think that as an intern with the government this would strengten my application despite my GRE's but i guess not. Does anyone know if I can re-take the GRE's after finishing a Master's before applying for a Phd?
