  1. Yes! I was hoping someone would post, though apparently not enough to do it myself ha. But I'll be there in the fall...
  2. I got into Heinz' MSISPM with 12k/semester. I visited Heinz and I just got this sense that there is a A LOT going ont there and it's an interesting place to be. I'm interested in social networks, but I'm interested in doing applied research. Maybe work for a think tank or consulting firm or government when I'm done with school. My alternative is a PhD (full funding 5 years) in sociology at UC Irvine. I'm having a really tough time deciding between the two. Both have things going for them: Heinz Pro Location (East coast is home for me) Recruitment/job placement history Strong name Some cutting edge people/research going on UCI Pro Strong program in social networks Seem to do some more applied research Would potentially graduate as an expert in social networks (at least relative to an MA from Heinz) Strong faculty in Networks - with one specifically doing really fascinating work (Got his phd at CMU - coincidence?) THANKS!

  4. You should add this to the sociology forum
  5. Anyone have any updates on UMD? Did all the decisions somehow go to people who don't post on theGradCafe?
  6. Visiting weekend was this past weekend. Not sure what that means for people who haven't heard. Anyone who went to visiting weekend want to share their thoughts? I couldn't go, but would like to hear impressions... Thanks!
  7. My UNC application status still says "Thank you for submitting your application. Your decision is not yet available." Considering the accepted students day is at the end of February, does that pretty much mean the acceptances have been handed out and whoever hasn't heard isn't getting in?
  8. Same boat. Would love to hear someone's thoughts. I was thinking about doing the masters + Peace Corps option, which limites me to nonprofits or international energy. I'm much more interested in the latter, so if anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
  9. I'm finding my interests lie in the intersection of poli sci and sociology, but I want my work to be practical. I'm interested in topics of diffusion and the role of networks as they relate to national security. Do I belong in sociology, Poli-sci, public policy? I was introduced to social networks through sociology, so didn't really think to look in other departments, but have since been speaking with a lot of people in different departments who all (shocker) think their department is the bees knees. Ultimately, I want to apply my research first and teach second. I am wondering how my potential advisors in sociology/poli-sci would feel if I didn't go straight to academia. And if I belong in a public policy program, which one? Network analysis is key for me. One person recommended UMich with their join PhD in Public Policy and Poli-sci. Stats: Undergrad: solid, well known research university UGPA: 3.56/4 double major poli-sci/sociology (a theme?) GPA: 3.76 and 3.81 GRE: V: 680 Q: 620 AW: 5 Solid research in networks, political theory. Solid Recs Worked in large consulting firm doing health care (don't want to focus on healthcare). Two presentations at international conferences.

  13. Sorry - those are major GPAs, not Masters... I don't have any advance math courses. I do have some science courses. Ideally I would be in DC, but I haven't been able to find enough programs. I have really been doing my homework on the programs and I thought these would be realistic. I could apply to Harvard and/or Columbia, but I didn't think those are too realistic. And Columbia kind of rubbed me the wrong way...
  14. I had a feeling my quant was on the low side - that's probably what I'm worried about most. I definitely thought about retaking it, but figured if I don't get in anywhere this year, I'll have time to take it again before they change the test and study more/hopefully do better.
  15. That's fair. I was just wondering if I was gonna get tossed into the "who does this punk think he is?" category.
  16. Am I competitive? UG: Well known research university GPA: 3.56 MGPA: 3.76 - Poli-sci MGPA: 3.81- Sociology GRE: 680V, 620Q Should have really solid recs from well known professors in soc. Good writing sample focusing on networks. Goal programs: Duke, Irvine, Princeton, Maryland Thoughts? Thanks!
