  1. Wow!! Summer holidays are over, and finally I got on-campus housing in the last round.

When I was thinking of going early to Stanford in order to rent an appartment I bought the flight for 09/02/11, but now I'll be moving to the apartment the first day that it's available 09/09/11, so I'll be doing a sort of nomadic life for a week, more or less.

Do you know of any place to stay. There are some places in http://www.stanford.edu/dept/visitorinfo/plan/lodging.html, but does anyone already in the bay zone have a personal experience with any of them?

Well, if you arrive and you want to meet someone just as lost as yourself to visit the campus, buy a bike, explore the zone, go to SF, or have a beer, send me a private message.

See you on the oval !!

  2. xiamize- I got EV in the first lottery! will PM you my details -- do add. Aaron McDevitt- will PM you also!

    Hi all structure geeks!

I've applied for the second round of in-campus housing, but this time without stating that "I was going to live anywhere I was eligible for", so my chances are less than none.

Anyway I've made my mind to live somewhere near the campus if it's affordable, or somewhere far if it is not and to benefit of this "unique" opportunity of becoming a cycle champion like Lance Armstrong.

I have been checking the Padmapper site for a while, and it seems that most of the places offered are for summer (students leaving on holidays subrenting their places).

How long before the beggining of the course do you think will be enough for me to show up and find something? I have thought of buying my plane ticket for september 1st, is it enough?

Nice to meet you all. I hope to see you tanned on the Oval before the beggining.

  3. Got my first priority! Rains House 2BR

Yuri Gagarin, I am sorry to hear you were not assigned. I don't think you should worry. The Housing webpage with regards to the lottery statistics mentions that some students who are guaranteed accommodation (because they ticked that box that they are willing to live anywhere) were not assigned in the first round but they are still guaranteed a place. You want, of course, to double-check with them.

I was also panicking recently, actually. Did all international students get the I-20 form already?

I only applied today. I hope this is not too late. I am still panicking. ohmy.gif

Yeah, I read that too, but they got in the 1500$ Buckingham Palace of Munger. But I'm Spanish, we're in a heavy crise, I just can't afford that. I'm renting my home here to pay the accomodation there.

I'll try to find something "not so far" from Stanford, maybe in a "Tour de France" leg range. Anyone willing to share a 2 bedroom appartment? I don't snore.

I'll try to contact a friend, of a friend, of a friend, who lives in SF at least to have an idea of what do I need to rent a bedroom. Do I need a credit history? Do I need references? Lol, I will ask my "main" recommender to write me a letter of reference stating that I'm a tidy and good guy.

I've also applied today for the I-20 documents and visa related stuff. At first I received an "automated e-mail" from gradadmissions@stanford.edu saying that "there were to many inquiries to be answered". Then I sent a 2nd email stating "Second Request" in the subject line and a human being, and not just a machine, answered that the documents were correctly received; they will contact me if anything is missing.

The only thing that I think we should care about those documents is the price of the flights. The sooner we have the F-1 visa, the cheaper the flight. Allow 1 month for the I-20 and 1 month for the visa itself. We'll be buying the flight tickets by the beginning of August, when fares are at it's highest.

  4. HORREUR!!!

I've not been assigned any housing! And I chose every option meaning "own room" and "under 1000$;. And I chose the option that "I was willing to accept any type of housing"

How does that option works? Will they offer me a housing by mid-september costing 1500$?

How does the "2nd round" works? Should I change my preferences from the ones I chose in the 1st round?

Will I have any possibility of being assigned to one of the "own room" and "under 1000$; options, or those are the ones completely crowded?

My lottery number is 3445, quite high I think, because in the Statistics of 2010 says:

The overall cutoff number for the last male, new graduate student assigned was 3418

Some students with lottery numbers higher than the overall cutoff number and assignment priority were assigned if they specifically listed the more expensive options that were not filled with applicants who specified the final choice that they would accept any option on campus.

Any international student in the same situation?

I don't know what to do in order to find a place by my own means. It's certainly difficult to plan a trip to the US, holding the visa, and to find something.

    AARRRRRRGGHHHH!!!

  5. Does anyone have an idea of what looks like a "2 Bedroom Efficiency" in Escondido Village.

I've read that those were one bedroom apartments that have been transformed to two bedroom ones, but I haven't found any drawing or plan reference about those.

What have you done about the "Are you willing to accept any assignment"?. I don't want to pay 1600$ in Munger, neither to sleep in the living room of a "1 bedroom double occupancy" apartment, but I'm international, and I think that it will be really difficult to find something else outside the campus by the first half of September if I do not move with enough time in advance.

What does it happen if you're not assigned an apartment?

    Is there any second round?

Anyway, the "searchable map" of Stanford webpage is a pain. I leave you a Google Earth map with the main residences. It's a huge campus, It will take me time to get used to it.

  6. Hi all,

I've been admitted to M.S. in Structural Engineering both to Stanford and UC San Diego.

My main interest is Earthquake Engineering, as this is my main motivation to study in the US, so... I've got this big dilemma. Which one is a better choice?

Stanford is Stanford, and of course it has a better overall reputation. But one of my recommenders just called me to advise me to think it carefully, because San Diego is one of the leading universities in that domain.

The problem with San Diego is that, of the two Very well known professors In Earthquake Eng., one of them has just retired, and the other one is currently the Dean of the Engineering School, and he doesn't take students to work with.

    What would you do?

  7. Hi all.

I have been accepted to Stanford's MS Program in Civil and Environmental program. I am an international student. I had some questions regarding the housing application. The thing is that it would be difficult for me to manage a rent upwards of 1200 dollars per month. But I am not sure how much rent would an off-campus residence around the university would entail, and specifically how easy it would be to obtain an off-campus residence of such sort, considering I probably would not be coming to US before 15 Sep.

Right now, I have prepared the list of residence choices in the housing application, and set the final choice to "I would accept any residence...". The reason I have done so is because as an international student, it would be best if i have the accommodation thing already set before entering he university, the only problem is if suppose if the list of my choices get exhausted and I am then randomly assigned a 1500USD per month contract. As outlined on the housing website, contracts once entered can not in general be terminated mid-way without incurring severe penalties.

Suppose I change the final option to "I will accept the residence only from the above list only", and the list gets exhausted, I would have to apply for the second round assignments... what are the chances of getting a housing assignment in the second round?? also, in this case if worst comes to worst and I would have to look for off-campus residences, how easily and at what rent can i get one?

Would really appreciate any suggestions on what to do... which option to go for? and thanks for reading the rather long post :)

    Hi hello_every1 !!

We're going to be peers! Which program are you going to enroll? I'm on Structural Engineering and I'm international too.

I have exactly the same doubts as you regarding the housing.

I send you a Private Message to talk about.

  8. Hi all and congrats,

I've been admited to Civil Engineering MS at and I'm international. It's great to go to Stanford and it's cool to live at least for one year in CA.

I've heard that Escondido Village is a little bit too quiet. What do you think?

I'm european, and here the use of public transportation between university campuses and main cities is very common. Do you think that I will need a car if I want to visit SF on a regular basis?

  9. I've been dancing to it every night anyway to help dispel my nervous energy. If I get in, I'll probably loop it and just keep going! The greatest groove of all.

    LOL. Celebration of Kitsch!!

  10. It was late and I was at work.

Well, it was really late and I had really a lot of work.

My father called me on the phone: When are you comming? You've got a letter from Stanford.

    - WHAT????. OPEN IT!!! WHAT DOES IT SAY????

    - I've already opened it, but I can't translate the meaning. I think you've been accepted, but.. I don't know (Yes, I'm international and my father doesn't speak english)

    - TAKE THE CAR, COME HERE, RIGHT NOW !!!

The most terrifying 15 minutes in human history elapsed...

My father arrived, it was my first acceptance, we went to have a beer in the cafe by the next corner and then I exhausted the battery of my phone calling, and calling, and calling...

  11. FIRST ACCEPTANCE: ADMITTED TO STANFORD !!!

    Structural Engineering, Master of Science.

Admitted by mail (postal service). Letter sent on February 24 and received today (Europe).

I am international so I was not applying for funding

I do not know what to say... I'm so fucking happy.

¡¡¡ Best luck for all !!!

  12. I have just seen on the "Results List" that UC Berkeley has started to send some rejections, and not bad students precisely:

    UC BerkeleyCivil & Environmental Engineering (CEM), MS, Masters (F11)Rejected via E-mail on 9 Feb 2011I9 Feb 2011GPA : 3.9/4.0, GRE 1520/5.0, It's hard to believe....UC Berkeley // Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEM), MS, Masters (F11) // Rejected via E-mail on 9 Feb 2011// I // 9 Feb 2011 // GPA : 3.9/4.0, GRE 1520/5.0, It's hard to believe....

Good luck for everyone, and for me.

  13. On my documents, the registration number has a dash. On the website, you have to enter it without the dash. Could that be it? Also, I would type it. Sometimes copy/paste messes things up by catching a random space or some other formatting item.

Of course I've already tried typing the numbers myself and it makes no difference.

On my number there is no dash, just a 16 digit string.

    What can go wrong?

I can't believe it. Arent we in the Internet age? You take a test on their facilities, they record you with a video camera, they take a photo of you, they ask you stupid questions... and are they incapable of providing a fucking score of a test that I took 15 days ago?

    Unbelievable.

  14. Hi all,

I took the GRE on 26 November 2010 and since then, everytime I try to access my scores online there is the same message:

    Important Message

The information you provided does not match our records. Please try again

The registration number is ok (Copy and paste cannot make a mistake)

The date is Ok, and damn, the email is ok too.

    ¿Did it happen to you?

    Thanks.

  15. With verbal I would aim at at least 550, even if you are an international student.

So yes, if I were you, I would retake.

    thanks strangefox and bukharan.

  16. Hi all,

I just took the GRE and got Q:750 and V:490.

I'm an international student, and I'm applying to the summit of the top engineering graduate programs (UCB, Stanford).

    Would you retake the test?

I have to prepare for the TOEFL and it will be tight.

I would like to hear: No those are incredible grades, you'll get in.

But i know they aren't, so...

    Thanks guys.
