  1. Hey Helix, this happened to me last year -- actually, one of my recommenders totally missed the December 1 deadline. Afterwards, I called the school pretty much in a panic, and they said that they definitely accepted (somewhat) late letters. When I finally got ahold of the prof, he told me the same thing -- that the deadlines are mostly for applicants, not recommenders. He submitted the letter later that week, and I eventually got an offer from that school, so all was well. I guess what I would recommend is for you to call the school(s) that you are concerned about, and nicely ask about their policies on late letters. If they absolutely don't take late letters, then I would hunt that professor down, since he/she may be operating under the assumption that my prof had (that the deadline is for the student, not the recommender). They might say that they have a little leeway on accepting late letters, however, and in that case, you wouldn't have to feel so panicky right now. And, if you find out that the deadline is VERY firm, I don't think that you need to worry about being obnoxious. BE obnoxious, if necessary.
  2. I haven't heard anything either... but their visiting weekend is coming up, I think. I really thought that all acceptances had gone out.

This is very helpful -- the Grad Housing website makes it seem that the Sept 1 start date is inflexible, so, thank you -- I will look into it!

Hi Zotbrad! My husband is hoping to be able to transfer, staying with his current company, which has an office in NYC. If that doesn't work out, I'm sure he'll be looking at the same boards/locations as yourself Good luck!
  5. That post on the board wasn't mine, but I did receive a rejection email this morning, so that's at least two firm "no" responses.
  6. I agree -- impressions do matter. When I RSVPed for one of my weekends, I just asked to grad administrator what her advice was, and she kindly wrote back with clear suggestions as well as some practical tips. One thing she mentioned is that students DO dress up when meeting potential faculty, since it is the first time they are meeting people with whom they'll be working for years to come -- which is a very valid point. I think it may depend on the school (as well as the event in question -- some of the current grad students are putting together social events, for example for which I am NOT wearing a suit ). So, I'm planning on asking someone accessible at each school what they advise!
  7. I can address #1 -- I haven't heard anything from UNC -- I don't think anyone has posted a rejection, though.

Hi everyone, I just received an offer for Princeton's PhD program, and am SO excited -- but nervous about the COL and finding housing for my husband and I. It's really early in the game, but we're trying to figure out when we should move -- and therefore, when we should quit our jobs/when he should find a new one. We'd like to be able to move to NJ slightly before school starts, and he might have to move sometime between May-July, depending on when he finds a position (which would most likely be in NYC, incidentally). It seems that graduate housing move-in is not until September 1. If we prefer to move earlier, is it feasible to find non-Princeton housing at reasonable rates, convenient to the train, with leases starting in the late spring/summer?
  9. Just an email -- not personalized, except for mentioning my subfield.
  10. I think we agreed that the early admits were trolls...
  11. Hey everyone, it's not over till it's over... just got an acceptance from UCSD. The same deal as the previous ones -- no email, just through the website, with an invitation to the open house. Glad I somehow had the impulse to check again, because I had really given up.
