  1. Hi

Does anyone have any suggestions for Art History texts in German to practice for my proficiency exam this fall (MA). I am learning on my own, so something with a vetted English translation would be ideal!

By the way, I am using April Wilson's German Quickly (so much cheaper than Jannach!) and I highly recommend it, the only drawback being the brevity of the reading selections.

    Many Thanks!

  2. I am also having trouble with SoP brevity. My template is about 500 words with about 100 extra for fit. One school says a max of 1,000 words, another says a limit of 5 pages (doubles spaced I assume), another says not fewer than 200 words, and, my favorite, "brief". For schools with a max/limit of 1,000 words or 5 pages, is 600 too brief? Obviously if it states 1,000-2,000, than 1,000 is the minimum but for the others with no stated minimum?? I really like my succinct SoP, and I am afraid if I try to double it in size I will lose the flow.

  3. Tweaking the size of my transcript scan on Photoshop so that it was still legible but met the TINY upload limit was a Sisyphean task...something so simple should not have taken so much time...

Also, anyone applying to UMass Amherst notice that though they require a writing sample there is absolutely no indication of how this should be sent. That there is nowhere to upload leads me to believe a hard copy should be sent but that is never explicitly stated. Obviously an email is in order but it seems like quite an oversight

  4. What do you think the policy is on resending an email after an initial no-response? Should I take the silence as a lack of interest from POIs or consider the possibility my email got lost in the shuffle and resend? This is in regards to my top choice with a professor who has very similar research interests...

  5. Hi All,

Love this thread! I'm applying to 7 MA programs: UMD, UMAss Amherst, Chapel Hill, Williams, IFA, Tufts and one Museum Education (my absolute backup). I'm interested in late Medieval devotional objects and questions of gender/reception. Took the GRE (thank god indeed!), SoP is in third editing phase and I'm working on my writing sample now. What I have yet to do is contact POIs, a little nervous...trying to speed read articles but I feel under prepared! I've had a bunch of internships, including a couple at the Met but I'm really worried about my languages, does anyone else share this fear?

    @egomez11:

I also feel nervous about by undergraduate institution: I went to a city school (it was all I could afford). My education was fine but it doesn't quite have the weight of an Ivy, but what can you do?

    @ stilnovista:

I've met quite a few people in the Bard program and they are really loving it!

  6. Hi!

I know I'm a little late to the topic, but I am going through the same decision right now so maybe I can help: Art History, Museum Education, or Museum Studies? At first I was set on Museum Studies, thinking Art History would be too academic but after speaking to many Museum professionals I decided Art History was much more respectable than Museum Studies. The level of work required is generally more rigorous and the professional development and pedagogy that you would learn in Museum Studies/Education can be learned on the job.

The two Masters (one in Art History and one in Museum Ed) is my general plan. It is MUCH easier to acquire a Museum Education Masters while working full time than it is with Art History, thus I am applying to Art History programs for now, but trying to find TERMINAL (no PhDs to compete with) MA programs with some focus on Museum Studies.

Tufts, GWU and IFA all have Museum Studies components in their Art History Masters (IFA has a Museum Studies certificate, geared toward curatorial studies)

You might also want to check out NYU's Arts Education program, it has more of a Visual Arts tilt but I know people who are pleased with it and it is def applicable to museums.

Finally, Bank Street has a Museum Education degree that also gets you certified as a NYC public school teacher: a very practical degree although there is absolutely no art history to it.

Hope this helps, I know it is a tough decision!

  7. Hi All,

I got some strange advice and I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this:

I'm having trouble deciding which intern supervisor to ask for my 3rd recommendation and since it's rather late, I need to decide asap. I asked my father, who is a professor, and he said just send in 4 LoRs. This sounds ridiculous to me, does anyone know if it would it help or hurt my application?

    Thanks!

  8. hello all

I've been browsing the posts in Applications and I'm finding it difficult to discern which advice applies to MA apps and which to PhD apps. Specifically, research and publications.

If I'm applying for a terminal Master's in Art History, should I be contacting potential advisors with my research interests or is this only for PhD applicants? And should I have been published by now??

I would be much obliged for this clarification and good luck to everyone as application season heats up!
