  1. pro's : lots of faculty tryng to build their careers - so more opportunities to participate in research, usually

con's : some of them may move on (greener pastures/denied tenure) while you're in the program

  2. I'm surprised at the number of people who would prefer to be in an environment where they will just have their existing views approved and reinforced. Seems sort of solipsistic to me. Everyone wants to be comfortable rather than challenged. But I suppose that sort of thinking is rampant in our society these days. Personally, I'd rather be exposed to different (even radically different) points of view. I'm sure enough of myself that I can take a little criticism without being reduced to an ineffective puddle on the floor.

bullseye :D, I wish I could have written that !

  3. Iowa is way ahead of the others based on your interests, imo.

But if you want to consider more variables, you might want to see which of the departments has faculty in areas that are peripheral to your interests (SM comes to mind, for example!)

  4. it also depends on what you want from the program - if you already have some research ideas and need the guidance to see them through- then maybe the senior advisor is the better bet (say, to get you on the right methodological track, without actually micromanaging you :P ).

on the other hand, if you want to be closely mentored through the entire research process - then maybe the junior publication-machine prof would provide you with better opportunities to participate in his/her research agenda

from what i have gathered from existing grad students, i guess there's no 'absolutely-right-type' of professor out there ... each has tradeoffs based on what you're looking for :?

  5. sloan has already sent out 2 rounds of rejections, so if you're still to hear frmo them, you're probably waitlisted. There was a 17th feb acceptance though, on GC. Any other acceptances out there ?

and yes the program is very niche - but no, it's not as org focused as it was a year or two ago - lots of people doing other fancy things there, on the micro/interaction side of economic sociology as well
