I won't be going - I'll let them know ASAP. Do you think it'll make a difference?

I'm in California. Heard on Monday.

How much does $$ factor into your decision?

Great advice. It's not worth the massive debt when you top out at $60k/yr in the public sector. Cheers to goin' to school for free!! -
Anyone Hear From the LBJ School?
slothrop99 replied to golonghorns's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Just got in to the MGPS program! Funding info will come in a few weeks via snail mail, they say. I applied to LBJ as part of a dual degree program with the Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. I wonder if this means I'm in there too? Would they accept people at one school and not the other? -
hey, that's my name!

Just got accepted today via snail mail, and was placed on the waitlist for financial aid. Probably won't be attending - was aiming for the PC Fellowship. Oh well.

Yeah, that was horribly worded - something like "we cannot process your FAFSA documents because you have not been admitted." What, they couldn't have said "not yet admitted"? Very ambiguous. I'm glad I'm not the only one who got that... -

I think the poster was referring to the second wave of admissions for the MPA program. As far as I know, MGPS hasn't notified yet, and probably won't for another two weeks. Calm, everyone! -

You guys are freaking me out by posting on this thread! Stop the madness until you hear something! -
Thanks, YL. I'm convinced my time in "the Corps" was the reason for my acceptance and probably helped out with the funding offer. You were a PCV too, right? JLY: I had a good GPA from UC Berkeley (English major) plus high GRE scores. Good luck everyone!

I heard from SIS today - acceptance + full tuition merit scholarship + $9k stipend + work opportunity at SIS for another $7k. I'm psyched!!

Marrying a foreign national while in grad school-good idea?
slothrop99 replied to slothrop99's topic in Officially Grads
Hi Mims. From your description of your husband-to-be, it sounds like he would do absolutely fine as a newly-minted, US green card holder. He has good job prospects doing something he'd enjoy, basic English and the ability to learn more, enthusiasm about living here, and someone (you) to lean on if adjustment throws him a curveball. I think it really all depends on you and whether or not you're ready to take that step. I don't know much about US-Japan visa protocol, but can he visit or get a visa without marriage? If I were you, I might take the relationship for a test drive on US soil before tying the knot. But maybe this is impossible - it is in my case, anyway. My Central American girlfriend lives in a country that does not have the greatest diplomatic ties to the US. In her country, only rich and well-connected people can get visas, and she is neither. So, the ONLY way that we could be together here in the states while I'm in grad school is marriage. Granted, I'm almost 30 and it's probably high time I get my sh*t together, but marriage is not something I thought I'd do anytime soon, if ever. But I love this girl, and find myself pretty excited about the idea of spending my life with her. So marriage it is. Ideally, I would bring her up here and we'd see if the States suited her, if our relationship would change at all now that we're on "my turf", etc. etc. But that is impossible due to the absurdity of our immigration laws. All in all, I think that I would forever be kicking myself if I did not take this leap. Yes, it will be difficult: I don't know how I'm going to react to graduate school, she doesn't speak English (yet), she'd be very dependent on me at first, she might hate it here - a million things could go wrong. But that could be said of any relationship. People have surmounted greater challenges than this, and I say that if you're up for it, take that leap. -
Public/Intl Affairs/Relations/Policy Fall 2009

I'm pretty sure cornell07 applied to the Elliott school at GWU (the IR program), whereas most of you all with your app trackers probably applied to the public policy program (Trachtenberg or something like that?). I applied to Elliott, and I see no app tracker. Rest easy, cornell. -

I was just browsing the FAQ and it looks like notifications will happen mid-march, although I read something (on this board, maybe?) that decisions were emailed as early as Feb. 20th. I applied to the dual degree MGPS program and it might differ from the MPAff program, but I would think that the time frame would be relatively similar among these two programs. I'm getting antsy! -
I was actually an English major in college. Took one calc class as a freshman and got a B-, no econ or stats classes either. But that was years ago. I'm now enrolled in macroecon, microecon, and stats at a community college, and I'm banking on my WE and high GREs to get me into an IR/MPP program. The general sentiment on this board and others is that work experience tends to trump any lack of econ/math courses, but I suppose we'll see very soon. Good luck!

Public/Intl Affairs/Relations/Policy Fall 2009
slothrop99 replied to Dreams's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Younglions, If I remember correctly, you're a returned Peace Corps Vol, right? I am too, just back from Central America. I can't really get a sense as to whether PC service is a) hugely positive mediocre or c) a non-issue in terms of its impact on our admissions chances at a given institution. I suppose it has everything to do with how you spin it in your SOP. What are your thoughts, now that you have that glowing letter under your proverbial belt? -

Congrats, YL. That's great news. Heck, I was impressed by your stats too. Hopefully, bags of money will follow. What are you doing in Mex? -
All, I just spoke with the Financial Aid Office at Gtown and they told me that I (we) wouldn't have GUID #s because we're not yet enrolled (this form appears to be used by continuing students as well). I will be slapping a big ole "n/a" on that section... TS

Linden, I'm applying for the Gtown MSFS and I just checked my status again. All of the info is there - supplemental docs, GREs, transcripts, LORs, etc. It says that my application is submitted and complete. Wonder what's up with yours? Are you or is anyone else applying to the GWU Elliott MA program? They're still telling me (or the status website is telling me) that my app is incomplete because they haven't received my GRE scores, even though they were sent awhile ago. I called ETS to confirm, and they said they were sent as well. GW's not responding to emails, and their phone is basically off the hook (there's a weird message with no options to speak with anyone). Frustrating. Anyway, good luck with the GTown app. T. Slothrop

Just wondering if anyone else is applying to the Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship thru the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation? I just submitted my app, and it sounds like a great deal for anyone who's thinking of a career in the foreign service (or at least doesn't mind serving 4.5 years in the FS upon graduation). Any ideas as to whom this scholarship is geared toward? Past recipients? It's kind of strange that they consider applicants who haven't even been admitted to grad school yet. How sucky would it be to receive the fellowship and then not get into any of my schools? Not likely, I suppose. Any other would-be Pickering Fellows out there? TS

And thanks, MPP2011 - good luck to you too. Judging from your stats, I'm guessing you won't have a problem getting into your school of choice, either. Time is crawling by now that apps are in, no?
