GOT INTO MICHIGAN OFF THE WAITLIST OMGGGGGGGG

Anyone else on the waitlist at UMich get an email about remaining on the waitlist?

I was told that the "last prospective student had just accepted their offer", so I think that all accepted students took their spots. That was my impression from being in contact with them as a waitlister!

Not sure if anyone here has any stake in this, but the Poetry cohort at JHU is full.

Okay, that's good to know! Were you negotiating funding at UMichigan? And did you accept? If so, I really hope to see you there (if my waitlist end up being anything lol)

Does anyone know about any successful waitlist movement from previous years at UMich? Particularly in poetry? It's my top choice, and I am trying so hard to hold on to some hope, but feeling so nervous. Doesn't look very hopeful from looking at draft.

Iowa…you want to release waitlists so bad….you want to do it right now.

When do we think we will see Iowa waitlists for poetry? Are waitlists usually notified by email?

I reached out to both programs I am waitlisted at and received very kind, encouraging responses. At one place I had the opportunity to set up a zoom call with the faculty member that I had been corresponding with (at their offer). Really, really nice and got to ask all of my questions and express my interest. They told me to keep reaching out as it gets closer to April 15th to reaffirm interest and to check in as to how things are looking. So I think in general, as long as you aren't totally pestering them, it is definitely good, and even encouraged to reach out!

Anyone know roughly when UHouston usually goes out for poetry? Also Iowa waitlists?

UVA waitlists on draft…my portal still says awaiting decision…should I assume the worst?

Do we think Iowa is done calling poetry applicants? Are we just waiting on waitlists? Also, where is everyone expecting to hear from this week?

Anybody know if Iowa calls poetry acceptances on the weekends? Saw an acceptance on Friday but nothing since, could be that it’s just not represented on the draft but just curious as to what others know/think. Any idea as to when/for how long they usually call? Ahhhhhhhhhh!!

I've never really heard of the state mattering. It does matter if you are applying to a grad program at your undergraduate institution, but even then, it is highly dependent program to program. For example, my poetry professors told me they do not accept any of their own undergrads into the MFA program, but the fiction professors will. Really just depends on what the staff at each school and genre think/feel! I think it is generally better to go somewhere else for grad school. If you ever want to apply for college-level teaching jobs in English, it is usually preferable to have gone to two different places for undergrad and grad school to avoid academic inbreeding. I don't think it typically matters down to the state, but I could be wrong!

Hi! I am also waitlisted at JHU. Two people I went to undergrad with who went on to earn MFAs were waitlisted and then admitted from the waitlist (one at JHU and one at UOregon). And they both say they know others at each program who got in off the waitlist. So we can be cautiously hopeful. Having more than one waitlist makes it all the more likely you'll get in somewhere, methinks. Good luck! Also, sidenote- Guppy is what my whole family calls my grandma.

Ahhh good luck!!! I am still waiting on Cornell, Minnesota, UWashington, UOregon, Iowa, Virginia, Rutgers Camden, Houston, and NC State. Assuming Notre Dame is a rejection. So incredibly thrilled with my Michigan/Hopkins waitlists, but really want just one acceptance, just so I know I will at least be going somewhere next year. I hate not knowing so much!

Just curious... what schools are we expecting this week? Cornell rejections/waitlists today, maybe? Anything else?

Maybe I am naive and young and haven't been fucked in the ass by life enough. But in a culture so dominated by pessimism, hate, and doomscrolling, hope and optimism feel like subversive, revolutionary acts. I don't think what we need right now politically (or on this particular forum) is more pessimism. I am gonna sound maybe a bit dorky here for a second, but pessimism doesn't incite action or change; hope does. And I don't know. I just think pessimism is unimaginative and boring. I'm really uninterested. I had a good conversation with the author of this book during undergrad. I am feeling really grateful to have today off from teaching (I am still in bed and it's almost noon, what a rush.) I see Notre Dame interviews and Cornell acceptances are starting to come in. AHHHH.

Unfortunately, when someone enters information into the draft, there's no telling how long it's been between being notified and filling out the form on the draft. There are some acceptances last year that didn't go in the spreadsheet until days later, as more people were let into the draft and as people sat down and actually put in there acceptances and such.

Oh man, this shit is really not for the weak of heart. I got my waitlist from JHU (OMFG!) about an hour after I saw the first one hit the draft. Emotional rollercoaster. In my perfect world, I would be in a medically induced coma immediately after hitting submit on my last application, and when I woke up, every school would release all decisions all at the same time. Really hoping for Michigan today- do we really think there might not be any news till next week?

Glad to hear I am not alone! I will definitely be applying again if it doesn't work out this time around. I do have to say I am really looking forward to having the Summer off to figure everything out, whatever that may mean. Good luck to you!

Hi everyone! I am new here. Out of curiosity, what is everyone planning on doing next year if MFA does not pan out? I am currently teaching 8th-grade ELA in rural Florida. I try to look on the bright side, but to be honest, I hate it. This is my second year, and it's the only "big girl" job I have had since finishing undergrad. I am trying not to see MFA as my ticket out of Florida/public middle school (it's not just that of course, it's also a lifelong dream). I worked quite a bit with my poetry professors at my undergraduate institution on my application materials, and they made me feel really good about my manuscript/chances. They run a great, fully-funded MFA program, but unfortunately do not accept their own undergrads. As time goes on, I am getting increasingly anxious about worst-case plans. I am well aware that it's a bit of a lottery and that there are many great writers out there applying. I'm both convinced I won't get in anywhere and simultaneously feel like my head got a little too big and I put too many eggs in this basket. Just curious as to if others are feeling similarly and would love to hear what others' "backup plans" are!
