I recently picked up "The Oxford Handbook of Memory," which has gotten very good reviews; it may be more specific (e.g. only memory) than you are looking for though.

I think if anything having a Math BS is a plus. I heard from some professors when I was applying that many sociology departments like to "steal" and convert students from other disciplines. Additionally, I think having a strong quant. background is very desirable for a lot of sociology programs, which will be pretty much implied with a math BS.

Thanks for the tips cogneuroforfun and psychology! In the first semester of the program I believe the rough plan is TA plus stats class and methods class, along with research. I guess the intimidating part is transferring the methods knowledge that I've learned about extensively as an undergrad in a classroom setting to practice. But right now my plan is to dig in to my fresh-off-the-shelf copy of "The Oxford Handbook of Memory" .

Hey everyone. This doesn't really have to do with any program in particular, but I figure this is the best forum to ask in. I'm looking towards accepting an offer in psychology (experimental, not clinical) for a Ph.D. program. In undergrad I majored in psychology and sociology, but most of my research was done in sociology. As such, my research experience is primarily qualitative and not "in the lab" experimental. I'm really thrilled about the offer, but I am worried about not having a background in psychology lab research. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to best prepare myself in order to not look clueless come August? I am not oblivious to experimental methods, and have been on the participant side of a lot of psych. research, but have not had the opportunity to conduct any myself. I guess my fear is that on day one, getting into the program, and having my adviser bring me to the lab and say "get to work" (exaggerated, but that idea). Any tips? Thanks a lot. EDIT: I should add, I have thought about getting involved in a lab in summer for a few months, but so far the opportunities have been bleak. So this is assuming I am unable to get any lab positions before August.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for some general advice for my situation. I am going to be attending the visitation day for my top choice school. I'm currently on the waitlist, but was invited recently after finding out, either because they were planning on inviting waitlistee's in addition to the acceptees, or possibly because I reaffirmed my interest in the program (in other words, I don't know if the visit is aimed more at waitlisted people or selling the program to accepted students). Regardless, being as the visit is not for interviews, I am just trying to prepare for it as best I can, being as I do not really know what to expect. From the schedule, it looks like most of the day is spent going to and from each faculty member (the faculty is small), in addition to an orientation. Does anyone have any experiences or advice they would like to share concerning this type of situation? I do not consider interviews one of my strong points, and am not expecting to be faced with such questions, but is there anything else to be ready for in particular? Thanks!

Well I just received a reply from Ms. Marum, but I'm not really sure what to make of it. "The [committee] reviewed the applications and recommended several students into the program. Unfortunately, your application was not considered at this time....." Does this mean they have another round to go? I'm not sure what is meant by my application "not being considered."

Thanks for the tip. Ms. Marum was who I sent the e-mail to, perhaps calling directly would be a better idea?

Well I just received a postal rejection from Stony Brook. The letter said that they received around 100 applications for a new cohort of less than 5. Good luck Tritone and anyone else who applied!

Perhaps! I do like that they post their example comp. reading lists right on the site, as it has been providing me with some good reading material in the mean time! I know what you mean about backups; so far I have one acceptance, which really lowers the stress level. Problem is I spend too much time dreaming about the warm weather in Tucson.

Yeah, I have no idea what's taking so long. I would have expected a rejection letter to arrive by now (I gave the same address for mailing and permanent). Strange thing is I e-mailed the grad coordinator a long time ago to verify that my application was received and I got a prompt response. Who knows!

Hey, has anyone still not heard from UA? I haven't received any word at all, and despite e-mailing the grad. coordinator a few days ago, have not received a response.

Thanks for the info flyinglion. My decision status has been the standard UM " A decision has been made. Your program of application will inform you of the decision." for at least a couple of weeks now (and possibly a while before that), so I think they are just taking their time in getting rejections sent out!

Congratulations on the offers! Based on what you said, I would go for UM, primarially with the full funding. As long as you have been guaranteed the funding for the 5 years, as who knows how much more funding will be cut in Michigan (in particular) with the economic situation. On a side note, I also applied to CPEP, but have still not heard anything. I've been under the assumption for the last couple months that this meant rejected. Did you hear anything about notifications when you were told of your acceptance?

I wrote to the "Director of Graduate Studies," Eric Klinenberg, who's contact is listed at: http://sociology.fas.nyu.edu/object/soc.staff I received a very succinct response about 15 minutes later, so I assume he was at a computer at the time I sent the message!

It doesn't look like Stony Brook has it's own thread, so here we go! They are the one program from which I have heard nothing nor seen any word from anyone else this season. Does anyone have any news whatsoever?

Thanks for the reply's everyone. I did end up e-mailing the program. The results have been positive, so my advice to others is making contact is beneficial.

I still haven't heard anything from ASU, despite many other people hearing back either way on the single digit pages of this thread! I've been under the assumption that this means I have been rejected. Is anyone else in the same boat? Of course the ASURite page says my status is "in review" and that my application is "under evaluation," but somehow I doubt this .

Hey everyone. Sorry if this question seems silly, but I'm not so good with knowing a lot of social etiquette when it comes to student-coordinator interactions! Anyways, if you send an e-mail to a professor/grad coordinator asking a question, and they give a positive reply, giving you the information you asked for, is it necessary to have a follow up "thanks for the info" type e-mail? In a similar scenario, if a grad coordinator/prof. sends you an e-mail on their own without any specific questions, but rather some update on your application/status, or a "please feel free to contact us with any questions" type e-mail, does this warrant a response to confirm it was received? Thanks for any tips!

I also haven't heard anything. Hearing one way or another, or at least confirmation of being on a wait list would be nice... :shock:
