I created an account just to reply to this. Absolutely do not give up a tenure-track job in favour of a postdoc. Holding a postdoc will not increase your odds of landing SSHRC later, and you will have greater access to funding application support within your institution. The mid- to lower-tier institution has very little overall impact on what we do as scholars. You still publish, teach, and try to positively impact society in whatever area you're in. The main difference between a larger and smaller institution is that there is more available in the way of research staff support services but those are not absent in a smaller university. What matters more is the collegiality of colleagues (something often much stronger at smaller institutions) and a general desire to see everyone succeed (something lacking in larger institutions). So overall, and especially given the very limited and declining job market, do not give up a job. You're also in a stronger position on the job market should you see an opportunity elsewhere. A postdoc is great if you haven't held a TT-position, but someone applying for a job who HAS held a TT-position will always be seen as a more desirable hire than someone coming from a postdoc, if all else is relatively equal.
