  1. Thanks so much-- and congratulations! And meanwhile, I got another acceptance out of the blue tonight, so I can't complain at all.

So that tells me that they were perhaps hoping to invite other people to a paid visit if anyone declines. That might be why (as an earlier poster mentioned) they expected to have two dates for acceptances. I'm not discounting you yet, UT-Austin.

    Congrats on your other acceptance!

  2. Congrats, Bee!

Can I ask: Do you have a BA or an MA, and what kind of school did you come from?

My BA is from a really small lib arts college, and that worries me.

Thanks for all of the congratulations, everyone! I should also have mentioned, to the extent it's relevant, that I applied to the rhetoric concentration. Tortola, I don't have an MA, but I do have a JD. My BA is from an Ivy, but my GPA was not setting any records. My JD was from a decent law school where I had a high GPA. As you can probably guess, I might not be the best person to use as a benchmark because my application is unconventional in a few different ways.

  3. Hey guys, I'm one of the admits (just posted a few minutes ago). I heard via email which appears (?) to be a form email, though it's quite long. Invited to orientation weekend at the end of March. Also, I haven't looked at the board but saw a comment from someone here re: 27k/year? The total value of the package is listed as approximately 27k (including the tuition waiver/health insurance), but the stipend itself is a little over 14k. Of course, it's always possible that someone got a giant fellowship, but since the email itself mentions 27k as the value, my guess is that whoever posted listed that number instead of the stipend amount. I wish I had some information for you guys on whether or not they're still notifying, etc. Good luck to you all!!

  4. Before this thread goes distinctly pear-shaped, it might be wise to remind ourselves that this is a super tense time for many of us, and to perhaps monitor our sensitivity when posting or responding to other people's posts. As I was just telling one of my letter writers yesterday, this entire process has been nothing short of horrific, traumatic, and hideous -- but it's the waiting period that really takes the vomit-crown.

MAJOR congrats to wildeisonmine! It's a huge accomplishment, and I'm sure you deserve every part of it!

I second this emotion. Snaps for the acceptance :) I would also like to remind posters that anyone who divulges their stats almost always does so at the request of others and in the spirit of sharing information. Let's not punish people for being forthcoming.

  5. Still nothing?!

    I'm going batty waiting.

And, in perhaps the most insidious trick Gmail has ever played on me, I just opened my in-box to find an email from the Chicago Tribune. I could have killed my computer. It was an advertisement for $100 off a flight to anywhere.

Strange thing is, I never signed up for emails from the Chicago Tribune. So, I'm thinking it's definitely the adcom taking a more subtle approach to announcing admittance. Maybe I should just email them and tell them I accept...

If anyone hears anything or decides to call for more information (anyone want to volunteer?), please update the hand-wringers over here.

This happened to me, too, today with the Chicago Tribune spam! Not ok, universe.

  6. I was admitted yesterday, phone interview for a TA-ship scheduled for next week.

To those who received the admissions email: did anyone else get one that said, "I'm writing to congratulate you on your acceptance into the English Department's M.A./Ph.D. Program for Fall 2009?"

Ha! They must have fixed it - this is what mine said: "I’m writing to congratulate you on your acceptance into the UMASS English Department’s Ph.D. Program for Fall 2011."

  7. Congratulations and good luck with your interview.

Good luck to you - if you haven't gotten a rejection, I don't think you should panic, since it sounds like at least some rejection notices have gone out (?). Also, the email was surprisingly personal, so I could see where it would take them a few days to contact everyone.

  8. Congratulations to the people who got the UMass acceptances.

If you have any information about their process--is it complete, etc--could you share?

Also, one person posted a rejection on the results board. Does this mean they're done? If any one else has gotten a rejection, care to post it on the results board?

I'm going a bit out of my skin. The program director emailed me last week telling me that they had lost my writing sample and to please resend it.

I don't know if they're done accepting, but the acceptance letter says that they had 275 applications for an entering class of 15. Also, it says that we will probably know if we have a teaching assistantship by March 7. No indication, unfortunately about whether all acceptances had gone out, but the message from the person at the writing center (re: TA application) implies that those interviews are happening next week (?). It's all a bit mysterious to me - I'm actually wondering how someone who gets in off the waitlist, for example, would get funding if all of the TA positions are decided so early (they must leave spots open for that purpose?). Anyway, good luck :) It seems like notifications are flying out all over the place this week, and it's hard not to be caught up in the frenzy. I have erred in looking at the Duke thread a few times, and now I am stressed out about that - and I didn't even apply there!
