  1. Hello, I have been trying to figure out what kind of advisor I should have for a while. This is for a PhD in Statistics in the United States. I know that one of the most important things is getting an advisor who won't make my life miserable, so I am keeping that in mind too. However, I am wondering about a few things: Will the advisor I choose affect my opportunities for industry and/or government jobs? I know that they may matter in Academia, but I am thinking that I'll be leaving Academia after my PhD. Should I choose an advisor who has had a good number of their students go on to jobs that I prefer and/or want in my future, or does it matter that much? Moreover, will I ever get more opportunities for preferable jobs in industry/government with an advisor who has a high proportion of their students going onto such preferable jobs? I've heard that picking an advisor who is older and more "famous" may be bad because they will not care as much for your success (as they're already successful and don't need you to be successful) - Is this necessarily true? I guess it could also be bad for them to be older, as they have a higher chance of retiring in the next 4-5 years. Thank you for any of the advice provided!
